President’s Message Summer 2018

President’s Message

I am quoting this from a friend with her permission. Thank you to Patty Foster for YOUR greatness and inspiration.

A couple years ago there was a PBS special on the music of David Foster. As the hosts asked him about his early

years in music, one response jumped out at me. David said he loved music as a child and his parents allowed him to

take lessons in classical music. But David said: “I was good, but not great. ”He went on to explain that if he had been a better

musician he would likely have ended up as an anonymous face in some orchestra. Not being great forced him to look for other

ways to be involved in music. So he writes and produces for other musicians. It has been said that Foster’s songs have made

“many famous singers into superstars.” Many of his songs have become well known through the voices of Celine Dion, Barbra

Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Micheal Buble, and Boz Scaggs. And his own fame and

fortune have far surpassed what he could have possibly hoped for as a “great” musician.

In The Millionaire Mind, author Thomas Stanley looks at the common characteristics of people who have ended up

extremely wealthy. Their average GPA is 2.7. Why isn’t it that all 4.0 students become wildly successful? Maybe their

“greatness” came too easily and they missed the benefits of the struggle.

If “greatness” has not come easily for you, have you given up the pursuit and settled for mediocrity? Or have you

looked for alternative approaches for success anyway?

Maybe “greatness” that comes too easily is itself an obstacle. We’ve all seen athletes, musicians, writers, and speakers

who were so naturally great they never had to exercise the discipline to survive the hard times – and quickly faded into

oblivion.

Maybe not being “great” is your biggest hidden asset.

As teachers, we are constantly searching for greatness. We search for great students, for great moments in our

teaching. How is it we feel there is always another answer around the corner as we are always questioning our own

“greatness”?

After attending the IMTA conference, I was able to reflect on how many new people I met and how all of YOU as new

and longtime friends and colleagues inspire me. I see your greatness and we often discuss our own weaknesses. It is

my hope that you are able to celebrate your hidden gifts and your ability to go beyond what you think is possible.

Possessing not greatness, but the power to forge ahead when we feel debilitated by circumstances we can’t control

may be ultimately, an asset. Said beautifully by Eleanor Roosevelt, “You gain strength, courage and confidence by

every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face…you must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

Friends, I wish for you a wonderful summer and perhaps most of all, the “benefits” of struggle in our continued quests

as musicians and teachers.

-Cyndie Caruth, IMTA President

2018 State Conference Report The 2018 IMTA State conference was held at the University of Iowa in Iowa City from June 3-5, 2018. Attendees were treated to three days of concerts, presentations, and masterclasses that took full advantage of the beautiful new Voxman Music Building. Our guest artist was Dr. Alejandro Cremaschi, whose recital and presentation inspired many members to explore the riches of Latin American music in their own studios. Our guest clinician, Dr. Kevin Costley, introduced us to a wealth of ideas on how to manage piano ensembles and organize student festivals and performance activities. Dr. Suzanne Torkelson returned with her popular new-music session, and a new face, Dr. Greg Hand from the University of Iowa, gave us a wonderful introduction to the organ along with a tour of the two new instruments at the University of Iowa. Also new this year was an interactive session on games and off-bench activities led by Susan McGuire. West Music and Rieman Music were on hand to offer teachers discounted prices on fifteen tables full of sheet music, Premier Piano Service gave us a look at the work of master technician Tom Zasadny, and a new exhibitor, Kelley FIschels, came to educate teachers on the importance of hand and wrist health. Our organization’s teachers and students got their chance to shine at the Iowa All-Stars Concert and Honors Recitals, and two members received special recognition – Doris Swanson received the 2018 Certified Teacher of the Year Award, and Joan Hopkins received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award. We thank both for their energy, expertise, and service to our organization. Somehow, we also managed to find plenty of time for wonderful food and fellowship, and I hope you’ll join us next year for the 2019 State Conference at Graceland University in Lamoni. Many thanks to all for making this year’s conference a success!

UPDATES FOR AUDITIONS SEASON 2018-19 1. Judges fees are now $30.00/hour 2. Mileage is a flat .50/mile 3. All registrations will be done through the new IMTA website; more info to come!

Updated rules:

1. SCHEDULING: No student may perform or request a time slot outside of their performance level, either at District or State auditions. All students of a like level must perform within their dedicated time block. (Time requests within the given time block prior to the deadline may be made directly to the chair and will be at the discretion of the chair. Requests are not guaranteed.

2. THEORY ACCOMODATIONS: District Level A students who are not yet able to read and comprehend the Level A theory test may have it read to them at the teacher’s request. The reader working with the student may not be the said student’s teacher, parent, or other relative. All level A students using this accommodation must take their test at a designated time as determined by the district chair. Students who need a special accommodation (a separate table, etc), within reason, may be granted this accommodation, as long as it does not interfere with any other student’s ability to take the theory exam. The teacher must notify the district chair in advance so that the accommodation can be made, and the test administrators have proper instructions.

3. INFRACTION OF RULES: Should any teacher, student, chair, or parent attempt to break or bend any rules, causing problems for the chair or their district, the conflict will be presented to the State Auditions Chair, the President, and the Ethical Concerns Committee. Any infraction of the rules or unethical behavior pertaining to IMTA events by a teacher, student, chair, or parent, will result in a one-year probation period in which the teacher will be unable to enter any students in events. The teacher will be reinstated after the probationary period provided there are no further infractions. In the instance where a student, parent or chair violates the rules, the circumstance will be dealt with on an individual basis.

What constitutes an infraction? 1. Failure to adhere to any rules and regulations already set in place. 2. Attempts to alter repertoire selections after the registration deadline. 3. Any chair, students, teachers or parents who act our or respond to results or scheduling in any way other than a highly

professional manner. 4. Attempts to play or practice on the performance pianos prior to the auditions event or during breaks/lunch.

All grievances should be immediately directed to the attention of the State (Auditions or Festival) Chair and the President for review.

These new rules were voted into place at the June board meeting, and are meant to continue upholding a fair environment for all teachers and students across the state. If you have questions, please contact me at [email protected]

FESTIVAL UPDATE If you haven’t already done so, please check out the new IMTA website: iamta.org and click on the “Festivals” tab. All festival chairs will have a gmail specific account for their center that will allow them access to the registration forms from the website. This year will be a learning process for all of us. After the website is completely finished, I will meet with Cyndie Caruth and learn all there is to know about the new system. From there I will put together a list of steps and email all the festival chairs. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions!

A few changes are taking place with Festivals this year that pertain to everyone. 1. The registration deadline has now been shortened to just TWO WEEKS prior to the festival. The website will not allow any late

registrations after the deadline. This is different from auditions, which will remain with a four-week deadline prior to the audition event.

2. Judging fees will be $30/hour and mileage will be $.50/mile 3. Registration fees will be: $20/20-minute time slot

$30/30-minute time slot $45/45-minute time slot $60/60-minute time slot

The 15-minute time slot has been eliminated because it was so close to 20 minutes. The list of festival centers, dates, and chairpersons’ emails is also available on the website. Festivals are a wonderful non-competitive learning opportunity for you and your students. Some teachers use this event as auditions preparation while others use it as an opportunity for students who might not meet the repertoire and age requirements for auditions. If you would like to participate in a festival, please contact the closest chairperson to your location or myself.

Sincerely, Rachel McCoy, NCTM State Festivals Chair [email protected] Cell: 712-830-9239

IMTA Foundation If I have not had the chance to introduce myself to you already, please let me take this opportunity. My name is Charlie Schmidt and I am the new Foundation Chair for Iowa. If you are unfamiliar with the Foundation Fund, or if there are questions you may have, please do not hesitate to contact me. It is my honor to announce that this years' Foundation Fellow will be awarded to Connie Danielson, posthumously. I was overwhelmed by the generous donations already collected on her behalf. To date we have collected over $900 toward our goal of $1,500. This is a higher amount from last years' $1000 and I couldn't be more ecstatic at the progress so far. If you would like to donate to this fund, you can always send checks payable to IMTA to my address below, or to Carroll Caruth, treasurer , at 2105 NW Pleasant St., Ankeny, IA 50023. I look forward to serving you in this office and hope you will continue your support. Treasurer’s Report Carroll Caruth, IMTA Treasurer June 2018

As the fiscal year ends June 30th, all reports are now being finalized and will appear in the fall magazine. We are looking forward to 2018-2019 and reinforcing the balance for our organization by watching expenses carefully. We are asking each chair (especially audition chairs) to act responsibly as we are increasing judging fees this year. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if moving forward we could consider offering more benefits in the form of scholarships to our students? With your help in keeping our expenses to the absolute minimum, we may be able to find appropriate ways to reach out to our students with our collective support.

Should you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time! Carroll D. Caruth IMTA Treasurer [email protected]

2018 NAMTA SCHOLARSHIP RECAP

L-R Abigail Flint, Ana Ortiz, Dr. John Holstad, Linda Peng, Carly Broughton

2018 NAMTA Scholarship Recipients Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 NAMTA Scholarship Auditions held on Friday, May 11, 2018 at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls.

Two thousand dollars in scholarship money was awarded to four deserving high school senior pianists following their performance of musical selections before members of NAMTA and Adjudicator Dr. John Holstad, Professor Emeritus from UNI. The Program Coordinator for the annual audition is Scholarship Chairman, Ann Barry, of Cedar Falls.

This year’s scholarships were awarded to Linda Peng of Cedar Falls, Abigail Flint of Cedar Falls, Carly Broughton of Independence and Ana Ortiz of Waterloo.

Linda currently studies with Dr. Suzanne Torkelson of Waverly (previously Nicole Green of Cedar Falls). Linda will be attending Grinnell College in the fall. Linda’s accomplishments include: winner of the Terrace Hill Piano Competition Junior level 2015, participated in IMTA Pre-college Auditions for three consecutive years (named as a Alternate in 2015, Honorable Mention in 2016 and 2017), participated in the Music Teacher’s National Association Competition West Central Division – Senior Duet Category for two consecutive years in which she was named as an Alternate in 2016.

Abigail currently studies with Dr. Lynn Worcester-Jones of Cedar Falls (previously Barb Williams and Chandar Boyle). Abigail plans to attend UNI in the fall to pursue a degree in Music Education. Abigail’s accomplishments include: IMTA Local Pre-college auditions for four consecutive years receiving I Ratings (named first Alternate in 2016); participated in Federation Festival receiving Excellent and Superior ratings, Student Teacher Achievement Clinic (STAC) and the Clavinova Festival sponsored by West Music. Abigail also serves on the Worship Team at Cedar Heights Baptist Church where she plays keyboard.

Carly studies with Mary Schubich of Independence. Carly will be attending Wartburg College in the fall pursuing a degree in Music Therapy. She also received a Presidential scholarship for academic excellence. Carly’s accomplishments include participation in IMTA Local Pre-college Auditions (named as a 2nd Alternate), Federation Festival receiving Excellent and Superior Ratings. In

addition, Carly has played at area churches as well as accompanied her high school choir. She has also participated in percussion choir and mallet solos.

Ana currently studies with Brenda Buseman of Waterloo (previously Patricia Riddle, Millie Dieter). Ana will be attending Augsburg University in the fall to pursue Music Therapy degree. Ana’s accomplishments include participation in IMTA Local Pre-college Auditions for seven consecutive years (receiving I Ratings and Honorable Mention in 2017 and 2018), Student Teacher Achievement Clinic (STAC), Federation Festival receiving a Superior Rating and Cedar Valley Piano Auditions receiving Superior Ratings in 2011 and 2012. In addition, Ana is a member of the High School Concert and Jazz bands, accompanist for school musicals and has been a pianist and organist at area churches. Awards include: Outstanding Freshman Instrumentalist 2014-15, Concert Band Member of the Year 2016-17, Outstanding Jazz Musician 2016-17, Honor Band multiple years and Solo/Ensemble NICL Conference Level I Rating (Flute) in 2017.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Today's students are busy. To make time to practice and achieve this level of musicianship didn't just happen. It took a team with vision starting with parents willing to pay for good teaching, driving to the many events and encouraging enrichment with learning other instruments. The dedication of teachers both private and public music and other disciplines breathe into our youth a belief in themselves to be the best they can be. It goes even further that we are lucky to have an excellent music store "West Music" in our town that supports our music and instrument needs, a venue like the Hearst Center that encourages all of the arts, and piano technicians who lovingly help our instruments speak our heart. In the Cedar Valley and in Iowa, our rich history of music excellence is the DNA of our community and our state. This legacy all helps busy students become our next generation steeped in art appreciation. The students presented a list of their accomplishments. Besides the honors bestowed by ratings and awards, what is heartwarming is that they are using their music skills already to give back. They are involved in choir, band, orchestra, school productions, accompanying for soloists. They are helping at church and being a role model for service done in joy. Congratulations to Linda, Carly, Ana, Abigail, and their teachers! Ann Barry, Scholarship Chair

For almost five decades, they afforded audiences the world over an unforgettable musical experience. The MTNA–Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition differs from the MTNA student performance competitions because it consists of only two rounds: a Preliminary Round, by video submission only; and a Final Round, which takes place live at the National Conference.
