PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

Hello FCA Southwest Region Members,

First, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for bestowing on me this great honor of serving as President of the Southwest Region of FCA for the next two years. I also want tothank the membership at large for once again voting for me to serve another term on thisBoard. This is a very serious commitment to me, and I will do all in my power, along with thehelp of a great Board, to continue in the tradition of providing the best events, along with agreat magazine for our members to enjoy with their families and their magnificent cars.

I have stated often and loudly that in my opinion this is the best car club anyone could be a member. I say that because of the people. The members who participate in events, themembers who always have time to share their experience, the members who are of service to the club, the members of the board, and yes, of course the cars that bring this all together.Let’s not forget our advertisers, they are the backbone of our magazine, and sponsors ofmany an event. Patronize them when you can, and thank them often for helping us put out a world-class magazine.

This is a car club that is about fun. Fun drives, fun trips, fun tours, and fun members. This club excels at that. So mark those calendars for the events that interest you. In the next threemonths we will put on the 8th Annual Mystery Ride, Concorso Ferrari in Pasadena, First Saturday and Sunday meets and drives, The Annual Picnic, The Grand Canyon Event, andmany others. Come to one or come to all, and don’t forget tell a friend who is not yet a mem-ber to come and enjoy one of our events. Better yet, ask them to join and they can come on all the trips and join in on the fun.

Now, if your interest is more in the organization side of things, attend a board meeting. Theyare held on the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 am.  Contact us for the location of ournext board meeting.

Maybe you are a writer who would consider contributing to the Sempre Ferrari, we are alwayslooking for a good Ferrari story. Perhaps you might want to cover an event or even host anevent, these are just some of the examples of the opportunities available to you as a memberto have fun and become even more involved with your club.

Lastly, let the board know of any event, or improvement you think we as a club should address. My phone or email is always open to you, and I know that any other board member is availableas well.

It’s your club, get the most out of it, because it is the best car club anyone could be a member.

Sincerely,

Kenny LombinoFCA Southwest Region President & Regional Director

The FCA-SW tour of the Nethercutt startedon Nov. 15 at the beautiful home ofDenise Ferrari, who hosted all the atten-dees to a home cooked brunch. Denisedid a great job and everyone ate their filland more!

All the cars left together after negotiatingthe gate down the street from her house. We went through Placerita and SandCanyon roads over hills and aroundcurves, winding up in Sylmar, home to theNethercutt.

Most of the Ferraris (and a few non-Fer-raris) were able to park together in a rowin the Nethercutt Museum lot. We pro-ceeded across the street to the bottomlevel of the Nethercutt Collection acrossthe street, where we were met by our tourguide.

The Nethercutt Collection resides in a fourstory building. The first level is a two-storyhigh hall lined with mirrors and marbleand containing a collection of one-of-a-kind cars. Many of the cars belonged tocelebrities from the back in the day. Thestar of the collection is the DuesenbergTwenty Grand, so-named because it soldfor $20,000 when new. Today its valuewould be closer to $20 million. The mez-zanine and upper floor contained a price-less collection of hood ornaments, watches, and especially automated musi-cal instruments. The instruments were acentury old or more but all were in excel-lent condition and played perfectly. Thetour ended with a concert from the huge5,000-piped Mighty Wurlitzer TheatreOrgan in the center of the top floor.

During the tour we were accompanied byJack Nethercutt, a former race car driver

HOLIDAY PARTY 2014

Some Ferrari owners balked at bringingtheir cars out after a big storm in LA. Weare truly spoiled by the weather, and arerewarded with mostly beautiful, sunnydays for our driving pleasure.

On December 13th it was worth bringingmy F335 Spider out for a run to OakmontCountry Club in Glendale. The Club setaside their employee parking lot for us tohave plenty of parking, and even madesure there was no debris after the storm.Walking in to the private club, we werewarmly greeted and ushered in to a fes-tively decorated room. Tasty hors-d’oeu-vres were passed as we visited with fellowclub members. Soon it was time to sitdown for a delightful salad, followed by ajuicy New York steak with specially se-lected sides. The desert was a scrump-tious brownie and peppermint ice creamtreat, a perfect fit for the holiday season.

The highlight of the afternoon were the carolers, four Dickens-style costumed pro-fessional singers there to sing traditionaland contemporary carols a capella. Theystarted with a few classics, then opened it up to requests. The beautiful voices and animated moves delighted us with aseemingly unlimited repertoire of holidaysongs. With our bellies full and the greatentertainment, we left ready for the sea-son!

Thank you to everyone who attended andthanks also to Diana Dang for the photos.

This year’s Ortega Run was more like awalk, thanks to the escorts provided bythe CHP, Orange County Sheriff’s Depart-ment, the FBI, the CIA, and who knowsmaybe even the NSA. It was slow.

Phil Hill mapped out the original Ortegaroute back in the 1960s. Despite all thechanges over time, it remains a beautifuldrive from the I-5 to the scenic wine coun-try of Temecula.

Before starting out a member commentedas she signed the liability waiver, “Thismust have been a lot of work to put to-gether.” I think I stammered something inthe affirmative. But looking back it reallywasn’t difficult at all. Everyone was sohelpful and encouraging it didn’t seemlike work.

Tom Brockmiller and Jack Curtis are twoold pros who have organized the OrtegaRun so many times I think they’ve lostcount. Their experience and accessibilityproved invaluable. I owe them a debt ofgratitude. Tom planned a scenic tour toTemecula that we all enjoyed. Jack wasthe point man and made final arrange-ments with The Ponte Vineyard and Inn.Tom’s wife Linda helped with the clericaldetails and liability release signatures.Anna McKinley did a terrific job with clubemail announce- ments and online regis-tration. Many thanks to photographersTom Brockmiller, Bill Makepeace, and Tex Otto for taking superb pictures.

Jack, Tom and I were very impressed withthe knowledge, professionalism and helpgiven by Ponte Special Events Coordinator,Elizabeth Tyler and Director of Sales CrystalStadel. The Ponte Winery and Vineyard Inn

was a spectacular destination for our groupof 112 Ferrari enthusiasts.

Vineyard owners Claudio Ponte and LeahSchmidt’s friendliness and hospitalityoverwhelmed us. They treated everyone to a surprise champagne welcoming toast. And they also provided two lovely bottlesof wine for each table to accompany ourscrumptious Italian fare. After lunch wewere invited to the barrel room to tastespecial vintages directly from oak barrels. The surprises continued. Later in the af-ternoon, thirty members who booked accommodations at the Inn, enjoyed wineand hors d’oeuvres in Claudio’s privatesuite.

Everyone had a terrific time. It’s alwaysfun to support the club by participating inevents, but get involved and sponsor anevent it’s a wonderfully rewarding experi-ence. Ciao ’til next time. By the way, I’mreserving a room for next year! (And youshould too.)

Southern California has a beautiful newFerrari dealership to entice enthusiasts ofthe rolling works of art from Maranello.Located in Torrance on Hawthorne Blvd’sauto row, drivers of boring, mind numbing, monotonous and monochromatic vehicles, can now quench their thirst for passionbehind the steering wheel.

The contemporary glass enclosed two-story structure offers a showroom andservice center which caters solely toprancing horses in the 23,000 squarefoot facility. They will surely have to hire afull-time window cleaner to keep the glassclean from admirer’s faces and drool.

To a full house, Giacomo Mattioli, Presi-dent of the Mattioli Automotive Group, alongside Torrance Mayor Patrick Fureysymbollically cut a fittingly red ribbon toofficially commence business in the SouthBay. An Italian themed triple-layer Ferraricake was also presented to Mattioli andFurey in honor of the occasion.

While the DJ spun ambient music, min-glers roamed through a gallery of Ferrariphotographs, Hublot watches and plentyof open and closed sports cars aboutwhich to dream. TECH SESSION

On a beautiful February Saturday morningwhile half the country was buried in snow, the California South Bay was sunny andwarm and the sound of Prancing Horseswas in the air. A Tech Session was pro-vided for our members by the country’snewest Ferrari Showroom, South Bay Ferrari, which is part of the Mattioli Auto-motive Group (Ferrari Beverly Hills/Los Angeles/Silicon Valley and Scuderia Corsa,Racing with Ferrari).

Two dozen lucky FCA-SW members wereinvited to have their Ferraris inspected byfactory trained technicians: each car wasgiven a complete checkup by ServiceManager Chris Bour and his team and acomprehensive summary was provided.Ferrari South Bay’s service department isvery high tech and as clean as a hospitalER. A very Italian Espresso Bar was set up with amazing espresso, pastries andfinger food.

In addition to the complimentary car in-spection, General Manager Eddie Brodskyguided us through the brand new dra-matic 2-story, 23,000 square foot show-room that was packed with amazing carsthat included a spectacular white 458with black top and red interior, a CaliforniaT, a genuine Alonso Ferrari F1 car and onthe second floor a yellow La Ferrari. See-ing the La Ferrari up close and to studyevery detail allowed us to appreciate theextraordinary design elements from everyangle.

Thanks to the team at Ferrari South Bay,our members were given VIP service andthe collaboration between the club andthe Mattioli Automotive Group is provingto be beneficial to everyone.

JUDGINGSEMINAR

TRAINING FOR PRESENTERS & CLASS JUDGES

YOU BE THE JUDGE

Wally Clark performed another informational judging seminar in support of ConcorsoPasadena at the Ford Design Center.

On March 21, 2015 we held a FCA Judging seminar in advanceof Concorso Ferrari and the 2015 FCA Meet in Monterey this August. The idea behind the seminar was to be a refresher forexisting FCA judges, for owners to find out what is involved inhaving their Ferrari judged, and also in hopes of recruiting newjudges. We had about 25 attendees.

We held it at the Ford Design Center in Irvine, CA and our hostFCA member John Clinard was gracious in allowing us to use the large conference center in the building. We showed the FCAjudging presentation that is on the national website.

Tom Brockmiller, Peter Riley, and I gave some of the presenta-tions and all of us answered questions about judging techniques, subjective items, and deductions in general.

The Judging sheets the FCA uses also have a page for each sec-tion (chassis, interor and exteror) which shows what deductionsshould be taken for incorrect items, so that the deductions areconsistent through out the process.

We then proceeded outside where several attendees broughttheir Ferraris that we could practice on. Every one who wantedto practice was given a clipboard with the three judging sheetsused for each car. We had a good array of cars from a 512BBBoxer, several 308s, a 328, a 550 and a 355 Spider. Tom, Peter and I helped coach everyone on what to look for, sug-gested deductions for certain items and critiqued the judgingsheets. Overall, we had a good result and I hope everyonelearned something.

CMC MODEL

FERRARI DINO 156

“SHARKNOSE”FORMULA 1 CAR

SCALE MODEL REVIEW

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart observed thata modern F-1 car “looks like some kid'sscience project.” Back in the 1950s and1960s, race cars had a classic look tothem.

My favorite from that period is the 1961Ferrari Formula 1 car. Called the “Shark-nose” due to a pointed nose with twinscoops, its powerful V-6 engine allowed itto dominate at nearly every track. Ameri-can Phil Hill won the 1961 World Champi-onship in one of these cars.

CMC Models, a German company, makesan outstanding 1:18 scale model of theF156 Sharknose. Actually they makethree versions of this model representingcars driven by Phil Hill and Wolfgang VonTrips. The model is highly detailed - rightdown to the rivets holding the scoops andwindscreen in place. The engine, trans-mission and rear brakes can be accessedby lifting the rear cover. The front part ofthe car can also be removed to show thefully detailed radiator and driver compart-ment.

The model is made of several hundredparts. The paint is flawless. The steeringworks and the knockoffs on the real wirewheels also work, as do the independentsuspension, shocks and springs. In shortthe model is a real work of art. The modelis advertised a “limited edition” in thatCMC made 6,000 units of three versionsof the F156 Sharknose. You can buy themodel from cmc-modelcars.de (if available).I found it on E-Bay. Expect to pay around$400 for the model.
