President’s Column

The Olympics are behind us. I hope you had a chance to watch some of these amazing ath-letes perform. While watching the Olympics opening ceremony it was heart-warming to see these young people representing all the countries of the world come together with a common goal. It gives me hope in people.

Our 2017 Exchanges are coming together. See specific articles for more details for the follow-ing events.

In April, Dale Harmelink and Joe Geck will be our ED’s for our outbound exchange to Floria-nopolis, Brazil. This is a beautiful coastal city with beautiful beaches. Don’t worry about the Zika virus as they have not had problems in this area.

June 7-12, we will host FF Dayton. They will spend 5 days in Milwaukee and 5 days with FF Quad cities. We do need an ED or co-ED’s for this inbound exchange. Since this is only 4 days of activities, it is a good opportunity for a first-time ED to volunteer.

In September we will be expanding our inbound exchange with Vietnam-USA Society to a Global Exchange to assure a full exchange. An ED or co-ED’ are need-ed for the Milwaukee stay.

Your help is needed to make these exchanges successful. Watch for future plans to keep FFGM growing with a “Welcome to New and Poten-tial Members” event in spring 2017. Join in and be a volunteer! You will benefit from becoming involved.

The Annual Picnic Was A Sizzling Success!

On a hot and steamy July 20, FFGM gathered at Wirth Park in Brookfield for the annual picnic. The theme was Greek in honor of the upcoming exchange to Greece. A large variety of Greek food from Apollo Cafe was enjoyed by all. After dinner Greek dances were demonstrated and then taught to willing participants. The Raffle brought in $165. Thanks to all who contributed.

JoAnn Richards

Describing her experiences in various coun-tries and different cultures Joann says, “you don’t change [their culture], you just respect it and appreciate it.”

These are the words she lived by when she travelled the world, on her own, visiting her son while he was in the Peace Corps. Because of his job and the various places he lived she was able to visit Morocco, Indonesia, Argentina, and England. When she travelled to these coun-tries she didn’t travel as the average “tourist”; instead she was able to experience the parts of these countries and the cultures that an aver-age person who lived there would see.

While visiting Morocco she was able to see all parts, backpacking with her son, but her favorite part was seeing the very small town in the middle of the Sahara where her son lived.

“They had nothing,” she said. “Their houses were small and they had very little, but they were appreciative and happy.”

Her son’s landlord and his family invited them over for a dinner while she was there and they cooked her an amazing meal. She sat with them, ate exactly how they ate, drank tea like they drank tea, and tried to take in as much of the culture as she could. Before leaving, the landlord’s wife gave her a beautiful metal, jew-eled headpiece that looked as if it were worth more than most things they owned, but be-cause she was a guest the wife insisted that she take it.

JoAnn became involved with Friendship Force when she decided to attend the recent Costa Rica trip. She joined not only to travel but also because of her love for learning about other cultures. According to Joann “The people in Costa Rica just opened them with open arms, and I hope to do the same for the upcom-ing Montreal visitors.”

FFGM Community Involvement Supporting the Sikh Run/Walk

On Aug. 6, seven FFGM members joined hundreds of run/walk participants in a fundraiser for Sikh student scholarships. The “6” in the date is significant because that’s the number of people who were slain at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek in 2012.

Before the race, we ran into our club’s friend, Rahul Dubey (photographed in his turban), who has participated in several FFGM events. We also ran into Swarnjit Arora, a club member (not photographed.) Our “walkers,” besides Swarnjit, included Rosie Haas, Dave Kalan, Diane Istvanek, JoAnn Richards, Cris Reischl, and Gary Drescher. After the run/walk, everyone was treated to a delicious Indian lunch.

FFGM Reaching Out to Other Generations Driven by our club’s efforts to reach out to potential ambassadors of all ages, President Rosie

Haas and Membership Chair Dave Kalan arranged a luncheon for ESL (English as a Second Lan-guage) students from MATC. This end-of-the-semester party included eating tasty entrées with many foreign flavors provided by Dave, Sue Pack, and several of the students and ESL instructors.

Our former language teachers, Ann Line and Gary Drescher, came up with ideas about getting conversations started – but strangely enough, the games and activities were not needed, and the conversations about the students’ cultures went on effortlessly for two hours. The students were from Burma, Turkey, Albania, Algeria, Mexico, and India.
