President’s Message

When our members elected me to the presidency of our guild, I made a few commitments to myself and to our members. Amongst those commitments was to be playful and to create a fun atmosphere for our members and for our guests. Another commitment that I made was to reinforce a spirit of community amongst our members. To further those goals your CQA board presented the April member tea. The board members pulled out the stops and outdid themselves in creating beautiful welcoming tables, delicious food and tea, a fun hat contest with winners in five categories, a game with fat quarter stashes going home with winners at each table and surprise Barbershop Quartet vocals that included the talents of two of our member’s husbands! I want to recognize “Mr.” Jan Hunter and “Mr.” Marita Clark and two other singing associates for putting smiles on our faces. More recognition goes to our board members, Joan and Gerry Olsen who celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary with us at the tea and even took to the floor to share a dance! Our guild is very blessed to have such a power couple! Please thank your current and outgoing board members for giving our guild the gift of their time. You have re-elected some of our present officers and elected some new officers. Committee chairs have been appointed. Our new Board takes office June 1, the beginning of our fiscal year. Camarillo Quilters are needed to demonstrate hand quilting and to perhaps give a mini lesson/workshop to youth and adults at the annual Living History Day. CQA members may wish to take simple nine patch precut kits or a simple appliqué kit and allow participants to sew a make it and take it block. I wish I was able to personally participate, however, I will be traveling that weekend. I would be pleased to help prepare kits. CQA has a portable hand quilting frame available for demonstration. Please contact Thelma, 805-798-0001 [email protected] to volunteer at this important community event.

“Emerging Light”

Light has always been an inspiration. Artists over time have defined light in different ways.

✴ “Look at light and admire its beauty. Close your eyes, and then look again: what you saw is no

longer there; and what you will see later is not yet.” Leonardo da Vinci

✴ Emerge is defined as rising up, coming forth from a place shut off from view or hidden. Then coming

into sight and being noticed.

✴ Light is the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. When we think of light, we

think of sunshine, candles, halos, fire, lighting, laser or neon light. Yet there are far more kinds of light, whether natural or manmade. In the absence of light, there is darkness.

✴ The challenge is to create a quilt that illustrates the concept of “Emerging Light” in some form.

Consider the possibility of light appearing within a traditional set of blocks, a modern composition, or an art statement. Any quilting technique from traditional block(s), appliqué patterns to modern modes, or mixed quilting techniques can be combined into the quilt.

❖ Create a quilt based on the theme “Emerging Light.”

❖ The quilt must be no less than 72 inches nor more than 160” in total circumference.

Embellishments must not protrude more than ½” from the surface of the quilt.

❖ The quilt must be made with fabric and quilted either by hand or machine or both. It must consist

of three layers, and be either bound or enclosed along the edges.

❖ On the reverse side include a label with your name, mailing address, phone number, email

address, the quilt title and the Member Guild to which you belong. A 4” sleeve is required.

❖ Your entry must be free of any text or images protected by copyright, unless you have the

expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you

provide that written permission with your submission.

❖ The entry form must be completely filled out including a brief statement sharing your inspiration for

the quilt linked to the theme of the challenge of no more than 150 words.

❖ Include a photograph of your quilt with the entry form.

❖ An entrant must be a current member of a Member Guild or an Affiliate Member of the Southern

California Council of Quilt Guilds.

❖ By completing a Call for Quilts, you are agreeing to allow your work to be displayed for the duration of the 2018 Road to California Quilt Show.

❖ Entries must be submitted by August 1, 2017. Send your entry form and photograph to Stephania Bommarito, 18924 Patronella Avenue, Torrance, CA 90504. Or, email both entry form and photograph to [email protected] .

❖ Further info to follow after the entry deadline regarding where/when to send your quilt for collection.

❖ The Quilt Insurance Disclaimer can be found on the Entry Form. ❖ Questions, contact Stephania at 310-503-7989 or [email protected]
