President's Message
Marty and I have just returned from the Friendship Force Festival at Sea cruise with 152 FF members from around the world. This cruise took us from Buenos Aires, around Cape Horn, to Santiago, Chile, and then on to the Galapagos Islands with a smaller group. It was great to be able to spend some time with members from so many clubs, and to see some amazing places, but after 30 days I was glad to get home and connect with my local club. There is so much going on right here:
We are planning to welcome clubs from Huntsville, Alabama and Banjarmasin, Indonesia and a global birding journey, and are eager to hear the report of those who went on our Mexico journey. Seeing their pictures, I wished I could have been in two places at once!
While I was in South America, I received our club’s journey ‘match’ for 2020: We are invited to South Sydney, Australia and Hamilton, New Zealand! As New Zealand was our ‘top pick’ for 2020, I am sure there will be a lot of interest in this journey!
Meanwhile, here in Sacramento, be sure to watch your weekly ‘eblast’ summary of all that is going on locally. And remember that anyone can suggest a local activity to be added to our website. I love the creativity of our members in finding ways to keep all of us engaged in so many ways. Being a member of Friendship Force is truly being a citizen of the world, here at home and around the world.
I’m also proud that Sacramento Friendship Force has donated $1500 to the World Conference Scholarship Fund, to support our World Conference and ensure that some of our developing clubs will be able to participate. Thank you to all who work to make our club a voice for world peace and understanding.
In Friendship,
– Helen Flach, President

River City Food Distribution
By Audrey Wiechman
On Saturday, March 2, nine of our members
helped package and distribute food to about
350 low income families and individuals—most
of them refugees—at River City Food Bank’s
distribution center in the Arden Arcade area. Six
members volunteered on March 22. Thank you
to Chris and Julie Smith, Pat Ghiglieri, Pat
Longest, Jacob and Ambyr Summerhays, Jean-
Laurie Ainsworth, Dennis Corelis, Barbara
Horton, and Judy Maas.
Another opportunity to volunteer is on Saturday, April 27 at The
Center at St. Matthew’s, 2300 Edison Avenue in Sacramento. Set-
up is from 9:00-11:00 am, and food distribution is from 11:00 am-
1:00 pm. You can volunteer for either or both shifts. The limit is ten
volunteers for each shift. April 25 is the deadline to sign up on our
website: ffsacramento.org (link). Volunteers stand for most of the
time during each shift, and closed toed shoes are required. For
more information about the program, see:
https://rivercityfoodbank.org/rcfb-st-matthews/.
We hope more of our members will be able
to represent our club by participating in this
community service as their schedules allow. Besides following
our mission by promoting
goodwill, we are able to network
with other volunteers and
spread the word about
Friendship Force.

Harris Center Tour By Kathy Hart
Backstage Tour of Harris Center in Folsom –
Recap
On March 4, twenty-one members enjoyed a
behind-the-scenes tour of the beautiful
regional arts center opened in 2011, and
recently sold its millionth ticket.
We toured the facility
which includes a recording
studio, art gallery, cafe, the
black box and three
stages. We were able to
view the prop room as
students were busy
building sets for Beauty
and the Beast.
El Dorado Musical Theatre was in the middle of their
performance run of The Little Mermaid, so we saw their sets,
props and costumes up-close on Stage 1 and backstage.
Our tour guide, Michelle Petro, was knowledgeable and
answered our many
questions.
Harris Center offers a
wonderful diversity of
shows, many of which
are cross-cultural, so
be sure to check it out.
Eight members had
lunch together in Folsom after the tour,
spending a little more time together building
friendships - both old and new.

Huntsville Inbound Planning Meeting Marty McKnew
Volunteers Needed
Huntsville is coming to town September 18-25, 2019. Come help plan an amazing
journey for the ambassadors from Huntsville. Last year their club treated ours to an
amazing experience. Let’s show them California hospitality is up to their standards. We
need home hosts, day hosts, home-hosted meal hosts, day planners, event planners,
welcome planners, farewell planners and everything in between.
Home hosts, day hosts, day planners, dinner hosts and many more are needed for the
Huntsville inbound Journey coming in September. Plan to attend the first planning
meeting on Thursday, April 4 at 1 PM at the Arcade Library. Bring you great ideas so
we can make this a very special journey for our friends from Huntsville. If you haven’t
registered, now is your chance. Go to this site to register. I hope to see you there!
If you are unable to attend, but would like to help in any way, please contact Marty
McKnew at [email protected] .

Welcome International Students By Kathy Hart
Welcoming International
Students at CSUS
FF of Sacramento can have an impact
on the next generation, right here with
our local university campus. Many of
the international students studying at
CSUS are left to their own devices to
get from SMF airport to their hotel or
AirBNB without any real welcome from
locals. They may never be invited to
someone's home for a meal and
conversation. We can change that!
Helen Flach and Kathy Hart met with
the director and several staff members of the International Programs and Global Engagement
(IPGE). We believe there is an opportunity for our two organizations to work together and make
a difference for international students. The fall 2019 new student orientation will take place on
Friday, August 16, 2019. Most new students will be arriving between Saturday, August 10 and
Thursday, August 15, and are flying into the Sacramento airport (SMF). They expect
approximately 240 new international students, but only 30-35% will be requesting airport pick-
up. Exact numbers and arrival information will be available in July as students begin to
schedule flights.
IPGE plans to host a welcome BBQ for new students the weekend after orientation (August 17
or 18) that will hopefully include Friendship Force members who are eager to connect with
international students. There is a week between orientation and the start of the fall 2019
semester (August 26) where students don’t have a set schedule of events or activities.
Students need help with shopping trips to Target, IKEA, Walmart, etc., so that they can stock up
on supplies and amenities. Most students don’t have personal transportation, so IPGE would
like to be able to plan some scheduled trips with Friendship Force members where students can
visit these stores and receive some guidance on what items are needed, plus general
assistance in navigating the many options that are available in a store.
Are you interested in learning more about this new opportunity? Come to our April 11 general
meeting (see article above). The Director of International Programs and Global Engagement,
Stephanie Ingvaldson, will be there to share briefly about our ideas. If you are unable to make
the meeting but would like to be added to the list of interested members (and are available part
of the time August 10-26) please send an email to Kathy at [email protected]

Japan News By Emily Hopkins
Since we hosted Gifu, Japan this past November and we visited them the year before,
here’s some Japan news from BBC that may be of interest:
Japan has announced that the name of its new
imperial era, set to begin on 1 May, will be "Reiwa" -
signifying order and harmony.
Emperor Akihito will abdicate later this month to make
way for his son. Japan will enter the new 'Reiwa' era.
Happy April to all,
– Emily

Lotion Risks By Kathy Hart
Why Wearing Lotion to The Airport Can Ruin Your Trip (Mar 13, 2019 article – Fodors.com
https://www.fodors.com/news/news/why-wearing-lotion-to-the-airport-can-ruin-your-trip)
Who knew moisturizing your skin could cause so much trouble? Many soaps and
lotions containing the ingredient glycerin test positively for explosives and set off airport
sensors every day, resulting in embarrassment, inconvenience, and missed flights.
What can you do? Carry your own small, personal-sized soap bar with verified
ingredients when you travel to keep those TSA sensors at bay. If you do use soap that
you’re unsure about, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly. Leave them under the
water for an extra minute to make sure all the soapy residue is rinsed away.
Read the ingredient list of your lotion carefully to see if it contains glycerin. If the
ingredients aren’t available or you’re not certain, simply avoid wearing it on days you
have a plane to catch. Your skin may be a little drier, but at least you’ll catch your plane
on time.
Fortunately, sensor setoffs are easy to avoid if you follow these tips. Here’s to a
fabulous, hassle-free trip!
(Maybe that’s what happened to me at Frankfurt airport – 2 polizei with automatic weapons stood at the ready right beside me while
2 agents meticulously went through every part of my carry-ons. .-- ray)
