President’s MessageIAAF World Indoor Championships, Portland 2016The IAAF World Indoor Championships are the most important IAAF World Athletics Series competition after the outdoor world championships. Portland marks a welcome return of the world indoors to the United States of America. In 1987 Indianapolis, USA played host to the inaugural edition of the IAAF World Indoor Championships*. Since then there have been non-stadia events (race walking and

cross country) and a wonderful world juniors in 2014. The IAAF World Indoor Championships, Portland 2016 therefore represent the most significant IAAF World Athletics Series competition to be hosted in the USA in three decades.

The USA is historically the strongest athletics nation as measured by overall participation and the medals won by its athletes. Many of the legends of our sport are American. USA, the world’s first economic power, is a heartland of our sport yet general public perception of track and field athletics is low. The IAAF World Indoor Championships, Portland 2016 (17-20 March 2016) in the Oregon Convention Center will do much to raise awareness in America. Aside from the Rio Olympic Games these championships are the most important athletics event in 2016. I look forward with great anticipation to joining the athletes, coaches, officials, media and fans from around 150 nations in Portland.

Welcome to Oregon, home of TrackTownUSA! We join the City of Portland in expressing our excitement about the athletes, fans and officials coming from all over the world to the City of Roses. We know you are going to enjoy the up-close-and-personal experience that these World Indoor Championships will bring.

Thanks to a tremendous partnership between USATF and TrackTown USA, our collaboration with the IAAF has resulted in what promises to be another first-rate, world-class experience for the fans, athletes, officials and volunteers. We consider it an honor and privilege to host our fellow federations and the finest athletes in the world.

We also commend the unity and vision of the state of Oregon, county and local governments, the Oregon Track Club and hundreds of dedicated volunteers, who have all come together to ensure that the IAAF World Indoor Championships will be a spectacular event.

We know that the athletes who have traveled from all over the world will appreciate performing before fans who will make this a special place. The fans bring an energy that drives the athletes to run faster, throw farther and jump higher. We celebrate their efforts, and will work to ensure that the sacrifices they’ve made to get here are rewarded by the best experience possible.

We trust you will enjoy this amazing meet!

Each day, often in rain and occasionally shine, Portland’s waterfront is filled with runners. Just north of Eugene, aka TrackTown USA, Portland is a city that loves outdoor activity — hiking, kayaking, bicycling, and of course, running. When hundreds of international track and field athletes, coaches and fans fill our city for the IAAF World Indoor Championships in March 2016, they’re sure to feel at home in our outdoor, athletic and fitness culture. Not only will this international event be a boon for Portland’s economy, but it will also be an opportunity for Portlanders to immerse themselves in the sport we love. In addition to ticketed events, some competitions and the awards ceremonies will be free, ensuring all Portlanders have the opportunity to participate. And, with Portland City Council’s $2 million investment, the world’s top athletes will host activities for local youth.Portland is eagerly watching the countdown clock in Pioneer Courthouse Square, excited to welcome the world and cheer on our favorite athletes. See you in March, Portland 2016!
