Presidents Message

Well, it’s officially Spring, the cherry blossoms have come and are almost finished, and the weather is definitely warming up as the days grow longer. People can be seen out in their gar-dens and conversations are happening over the fence. Spring definitely changes our outlook on life! Around the guild, members are making plans to visit one of the many upcoming quilt shows on the island and surrounding areas. Several at-tended the show in Powell River and came back with very positive comments! If you haven’t made plans to attend a quilt show, check out the infor-mation on the bulletin board and see if there’s one that piques your interest. Thursdays continue to be busy with many winter projects in their finishing stages. It is amazing to see the variety of patterns and fabrics that brighten up the hall! Several have been working on their ‘library challenge’; thanks to Raelene and Anne for putting out a selection of books for us to check out on Thursdays! As our quilting year begins to wind down, I want to remind you that a big part of what makes our guild ‘tick’ is your participation in it! Please take some time to consider how you might contribute in the coming year. There are lots of committees that could use your help; a great way to keep our guild a place for all tastes. Enjoy your Spring quilting days!

You know you’re a quilter if…

Nominations 2015 As you all know, we, the Schoolhouse Quilters, have a very special Guild. It has

evolved that way because of our members, and the way they step up to the plate

for every occasion.

This is no less true of our Executive, and all their hard work. They have done

their bit for the Guild and are now ready to hand it over to others to do their

part. Yes, they are large shoes to fill, but I am pretty certain that they thought

the same thing at this time two years ago. Everyone can play a part in the run-

ning of the Guild, but we do need some folks to be our front runners, as it were.

We need:

Think about it, and if you want to, or can suggest someone who might want to

be part of our Executive, please let Carol Metner or Carreen Webber know.

Book Review Sulky - Secrets to Successful Embroidery Guild library #488

" " " Quilting Guild library # 489

" " " Applique Guild library # 490

" " " Stabilizing Guild library # 491

By Joyce Drexler

We have a wealth of information and ideas contained

in these four Sulky books, new additions to our guild's

library. Joyce Drexler is the author of all four, but

draws on other artists and instructors for projects and

ideas.

As you might guess, Sulky products are used through-

out these books. In addition to using Sulky threads,

various types of stabilizers are used for applique and

machine embroidery. I'm wondering if anyone has

used Sulky "Puffy Foam" to enhance stitching and

make words stand out - the results certainly look won-

derful in the "Secrets to Successful Embroidery"! This same book has a project using

crayons and free motion embroidery to create a lovely pansies and wreath hanging

(Page 85) - no need to own a computerized embroidery machine here!

"Secrets to Successful Applique" concentrates on various Sulky threads at the begin-

ning of the book. This section is followed by "Color Theory 101" for applique using

the Sulky Thread Palette. Using thread colors to demonstrate color schemes, neu-

trals and earthy neutrals is very informative, especially when the same trees/house

design is used to show the various color schemes.

Ever wanted to try weaving using your sewing machine? The secret ingredient is

'Heat away stabilizer' upon which you sew decorative yarns, threads and braids (Continued on page 5)

then remove the stabilizer with heat once you have completed your 'weaving' (see

page 61 of "Successful Stabilizing"). Different stabilizers are used in different pro-

jects and the nice thing with this book is the coding at the bottom of each page, in-

dication which stabilizer is appropriate for each project.

Inside the front cover of each book you will find a table of contents and inside the

back covers are pouches containing patterns for some of the projects in the

book. Even if you don't attempt a project, this set of books is worth looking

through for information and interesting ideas.

Comox Valley Exhibition (CVEx) Quilt Show August 28, 29 and 30, 2015

Theme ‘100 Fair Years’ The time draws near. Have you thought about your quilt entries yet? Please do. We would like to emphasize the Challenge Quilt Category. As in previous years Fabricland is sponsoring the category and will award a $50 gift certificate to the winner. The challenge quilt can be up to 120” in perimeter size and open to any quilted item, be it tradi-tional, fibre art or a wearable. The only other qualification is that the entry must reflect the CVEx Theme and have been made in the 12 months preceding the 2015 show. Another item this year that may be of special interest is the ‘name tag display’. There are no prizes or ribbons planned, as yet, for the display but with the diverse number of name tags available should be very interesting. Please think about making a new one for the display or showing off one you already have made. Again, we look forward to another successful Quilt Show at CVEx 2015 with your help. Thank you. Mystery Quilt 2015/ CQA Mystery Quilt

Spinning Stars designed by Anna Davison

Last September CQA offered an online seven part Mystery Quilt, this was our project for our

Guild’s March 14th 2015 Class. Anna Davison is

from Nova Scotia and I thought this pattern

would be a nice coast to coast truly Canadian

project.

We had a busy day and everyone went home

with enough done to be able to see the pat-

tern emerge. To find the pattern you need to

be a CQA member and go to the members only

section of the website. Buy extra fabric and

wait till part five for the correct template size.

Thank you everyone who was at the class. An extra big thank you to the workshop commit-

tee, as I changed the fabric list and we tried to contact everyone.

Janis Davis

Hi Janis

Thank you for sharing the Guild's photos with me! I love the variety of color combinations

quilters come up with when they don't know what the result will be - they go with their heart

- their favourites!

And thank you for the invitation to be a guest at your Comox Valley Quilt Guild should I

visit the island again. It's a beautiful part of Canada, and my husband and I fell in love with

it.

Please tell the girls I'm delighted with their results and wish them great success in their future

quilt making.
