President’s Message
Can you believe the holidays are right around the corner? I hope you’ll
be starting them off on a fun note with the Cookie Exchange or the Christmas
Luncheon.
Our membership is made up of amazing women! Did you know that Jo-
Ellen Wade, our 2nd Vice President/Membership rides a Harley? She started out
riding as a passenger on a “Fly & Ride” trip to Kauai, Hawaii, where you fly to
your destination and rent a motorcycle to ride. She & her husband, Mark, are
members of the Woodlands Harley Owners Group, or better known all over the
US as the Woodlands HOG . JoEllen then decided she wanted to ride inde-
pendently. She & her husband decided that it would be age-appropriate for her
to have a “trike,” rather than a two-wheel motorcycle. They found a trike on
EBay and flew to pick it up in Murphy, North Carolina. Mark had to drive it
home as JoEllen said she was clueless. Not long af-
ter, JoEllen took the motorcycle driving course and
got her license. This past summer they took a 3100
mile trip north through Chicago around the tip of
Lake Michigan, stopping off to visit friends in Indian
River, Michigan. As JoEllen said, “You never know
where life is going to take you and it is so much fun
on a Harley!”
Our next meeting will be on January 8. I want
to wish each and everyone of you a wonderful Christmas and New Year
Kathy Michalski
President
Santa, I wish for peace, good will towards
all and a Happy Healthy 2013

What are the odds?
Three Mah Jongg players
with the Giddy-Up Girls
drew bouquets – flowers
numbered 1 through 4 –
when they played Novem-
ber 13. The lucky players
are Betty Horelica, left, Sharon Schumann and Lin
Fish. It’s rare as dozens of games may be played
before one player draws a bouquet.
Sending sunshine wishes to
our friends

Perk up winter; attract songbirds
Noted nature photographer to show FAN members
how
Dreary weather get you down when January drifts
in?
Brighten your winter when well-known na-
ture photographer Kathy Adams Clark shows some
of her fabulous nature photos at our January 8 Gen-
eral Meeting.
Kathy’s fantastic photos illustrate her ideas
about attracting songbirds and other interesting crit-
ters to your backyard or balcony. If you read the
nature article each Saturday in the Houston Chroni-
cle, you’ve seen some of her work, but at FAN,
you’ll see it in vivid color on the big screen.
Kathy and her husband, Gary Clark, travel
extensively, exploring a wide range of natural habi-
tats to photograph and gather information on the
habits of birds. They’ve published a number of
books, some of which Kathy will have available for
purchase after our meeting.
Her latest book, Portrait of Houston, pub-
lished this fall, captures the essence of Houston in
photos. Kathy has taught at Leisure Learning Un-
limited for 20 years and asked hundreds of her for-
mer students for ideas about what to include in the
book.
According to the Chronicle, she selected for
the book “a blend of iconic images and less-familiar
locations” including skyscrapers, flowers at a farm-
ers market, kids at the Houston Livestock Show &
Rodeo, and The Woodlands Waterway.
Plan ahead to purchase a copy of this sure-to
-be-an-instant-favorite and have Kathy autograph it
following the FAN meeting.
1st VP/Programs—Lin Fish
Kathy’s photos have been published in Bird-
er's World, Ranger Rick, The New York Times and
National Geographic Books, among many. A Past-
president of the North American Nature Photography
Association, Kathy speaks frequently at association
meetings and nature festivals.
She also leads photo tours to exotic and well-
traveled sites around the world; tours in 2013 are
planned to Costa Rica, Cuba, Florence and the Tusca-
ny region of Italy, as well as Tanzania and the Rio
Grande Valley. Recent tours explored Morocco, the
Texas Hill Country and Machu Picchu, Peru.
Don’t miss this colorful, fun presentation!
Tour of The Lanier Library being planned
If you were at the meeting on November 6, you
were introduced to a wonderful resource right here in
Northwest Houston, The Lanier Theological Library.
Lin Fish [email protected] and I
[email protected] are forming a group
to tour the Library on Thursday, January 17 at 11:00.
The tour lasts about an hour. If you’d like to go,
please let one of us know.
