PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: This week, we welcome our partners to hear guest speaker Anne Butcher talk about the Mackay Women’s Centre Inc. which is a non-government, community-based organisation, committed to providing an environment that supports and facilitates the empowerment of all women. Last week, we had a very inspiring and courageous talk from Trudy Crowley who is suffering from ovarian cancer, a disease very difficult to detect. Trudy is working hard to fundraise in order to assist with better detection methods and eventually a cure. The Nude Luncheon event on September 8 will contribute towards achieving these goals as well as providing two palliative care beds for local hospitals. Trudy is being by supported by Rotarian Pauline Townsend in her fund-raising efforts and half the proceeds from our Swap Meet will go to her cause. Our club is manning the barbecue for the Run as 1 for Cystic Fibrosis day on August 27 at Caneland Park. This is a Fun Run and Dog Walk created to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. I attended the official opening ceremony of the Lamberts Beach Lookout on Friday and the whale watching telescopic binoculars donated by Group 1 clubs was a popular addition. I also attended a Group 1 Presidents’ meeting on Thursday; a tree planting event involving all Group 1 clubs is being planned early in the new year in conjunction with Council. It is DG Malcolm Saunders’ aim to plant trees equalling the number of Rotarians in the District. Clubs were also asked to support the District Convention being held in Mackay in 2020 which would be the last for District 9570 prior to the new Districts being introduced. A reminder the District Conference is on October 20, 21 and 22 at Agnes Waters. If you have not attended previously why not take a couple of days off and give it a go. ROTARYANNIVERSARIES

for AUGUST

Lamberts Beach Lookout Opening by Gov. Paul de Jersey

I attended the officialopening of Lambert’s Beachlookout last week which was a combined State Government and Mackay Regional Councilproject.

The site was opened by theGovernor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey; State member for Mackay Julienne Gilbert; and Mayor Greg Williamson.

Our 2016/17 Board, inconjunction with Rotary District9570 Group 1 Clubs, agreed to support the supply andinstallation of whale viewingtelescopic binoculars, an initiative presided over by DistrictGovernor’s RepresentativeMichael Buckeridge. Initially, the total cost was $10,000 of which our initial contribution was $1,700. However, because of the supplier’s generosity and Rotary’s good reputation regardingcommunity work, the final cost was significantly reduced to $5,555.

I would recommend you visit the site and yes, there were whales to be seen.

- President Ross Walker

Last week’s speaker, Trudy Crowley, was supported by Pauline Townsend on the subject “Ovarian Cancer” and raisingfunds through their “Nude Lunch’Programme.

They hope to buy a palliative care bed for the Base Hospital and also for the Mater Hospital. (First photo from left to right: Trudy Crowley and Pauline Townsend)

Paravilla and the Rotary Club of Mackay West

In 1987 work started on construction of Paravilla on the corner of Bridge Road and Pinder Street. The late Miss Myrtle Caddy had bequeathed the property to the Mackay & District Spinal Injuries Association Inc. for this purpose. John Smith was involved and we were supporting John. Our first job was to clear the large mango trees in the back yard. Grant Craig was conspicuous climbing around with a chain saw in one hand as branches rained down.

The building was completed in 1988 and in 1989 we erected a pergola adjoining the front of the building. Frank Hurley was President.

I don’t know if we have been back since then. It appears that our pergola has been replaced with a more up market version, however our plaque is still there screwed to the wall but behind the backboard for the dart board.

Paravilla is in constant need of assistance, perhaps we can help?

Dinner on Saturday the 7th of October 2017. For it to be a goer, we

need a reasonable number of both guests and hosts. Would you please

give it your consideration, check your diary, and make an entry so

you won’ clash with anything else as the date approaches. Also

needed are four or five hosts to enable the night to go ahead.

Anything less than that makes the size of each group unmanageable

for the individual hosts. Would you please discuss this with your

partner so we can get it sorted fairly soon. If you want to be a host,

please drop an SMS or email to Eric or Sina, as we like to keep those

names confidential so that it is a surprise on the night. A names list

will be sent around at the next couple of meetings.
