President’s Message

Secretary’s Message

Respected teachers and dear colleagues, On behalf of the Executive Committee of Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association, I would liketo thank the members for giving us a chance to serve this Association. Our recent meeting was atMadurai during the Spine CME meet.

Please read the minutes of the meeting and do send in your suggestions.

Our Association webpage is operational and we want to update all our addresses in thewebpage. It is also proposed that we have a chat line through which our members can get and giveadvice to colleagues on difficult cases.

It is imperative that all of us have a Medical Indemnity Cover for the work we do. I recommend that all of us take PPLS scheme with Indian Medical Association.

Often, I find doctor colleagues have no family medical insurance. Unless we doctors are covered for family medicalexpenses, how can we advice our patients?

Pending endorsement from the General Body, I propose that we have a Best Club Award for the chosen RegionalClub which is best among the various clubs of Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association. The clubs will be assessed on severalactivities like CME Programmes, social activities, awareness programmes and the number of IOA members.

This will bring about a healthy competition among the clubs and help us to win the Best Chapter Award of the IOA.I also expect an increase in the number of IOA members in our Association with this initiative. With regards, Yours sincerly, Dr. David .V. Rajan

Greetings from Chennai, After a very successful and interesting Annual Conference of TNOA at Chennai, it is time we considerintroducing more and more novel programmes in the future conferences.

There are a few himalayan tasks ahead of me and I request all the Honoured members of theAssociation to help me in finishing them perfectly.

It has been quite long since we had an updated Member’s Directory of TNOA. A large number ofaddresses in the current mailing lists are incorrect. Though the executive Committee members ofTNOA have been requested to update the addresses of all the members in their zones, I request all the members toco-operate with their zonal EC Members in correcting the addresses.

In this electronic era, it is high time we started communicating via the internet. Our offical website, www.tnortho.org isfunctional and it is my sincere request to all the members to go through the quality and content of the website. Presently, theofficial Newsletters and the TNOA Journals are available in our website apart from the other contents like rules andregulations etc.,

The Trauma Awareness and Prevention Project started by our President elect, Dr. Chidambaram, has to be given a new thrustand i request all the members to actively conduct the seminars and lectures for the school children, who are the targetpopulation for this project.

The Foreign Fellowship Program of our Association has finally taken shape and hopefully, the first Foreign Fellow will bemaking his trip abroad in September this year.

Thanking you,

Dr. R. Selvaraj

Editorial….

It is indeed a great pleasure to re-affirm my contacts with you through this news letter, the third for the term. Itwas exciting to do the previous two news letters which had won the appreciation of many. The changes werewelcome and it has goaded us to follow suit this time, too.

The TNOACON 2006 was a great event to remember thanks to the organizing committee. All doubts aboutthe viability of the idea of site selection near the sea side were proved wrong as the days of academic feastsunfolded. Well it leaves us with the onerous task of excelling better and better year after year. The organisersof the TNOACON 2007are sure to have taken note of this aspect and I am sure we will be certainly fed withanother exciting conference.

The news letter is a means of communicating issues close to our hearts and minds and it is very important that we make use of thisvehicle. The last few news letters had carried requests for opinion on conduct of conferences, creating awareness on road trafficaccidents and the impact we as TNOA are supposed to provide, intimation of missing links (addresses) etc. But, unfortunately, I hadnot received even a single response on any of these. Yes, I do understand that we are all busy with something or other but we shouldalso remember, as committed Orthopaedic Surgeons and members of our esteemed Association we have a responsibility on handin furthering the cause of our Association. I wish and am sure I will receive opinions in this regard in future.

The idea of creating Trauma Awareness and Prevention Project by our President elect is another shot in the arm. Whennon-orthoapedic related organisations raise a hue and cry about appalling road safety conditions we have been silent and it istime now for every one of us to do their bit to perfection.

Well, let us all get ready for the academic expose in the TNOACON 2007 at Erode and hope to meet you all there. Have fun!

I must admit that I had no difficulty in choosing the person for my interview in this section.

The choice was straight out of my kitty. Only I was wondering whether I would be able to take his

time off his now very busy academic and practice schedule. But true to his size he was large at

heart too and he readily obliged me. A person who had elevated from an illustrious son of an

illustrious father to the throne of President of IOA, our highest National body and crossing many

milestones during the course of his travel, is a very simple person but full of ideas, goals and vision

for the future. As the saying goes the formula for success has three vital ingredients viz, ambition,

vision and mission!

The following are the excerpts of the interview by the editor Dr. C. Raja Ravi Varma with

Prof. Mayilvahanan Natarajan, M.S. Ortho, M.Ch. Trauma(L’pool), Ph.D(Ortho Onco), D.Sc,

Professor and Head of Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, Government General Hospital & Madras

Medical College. He is also the Distinguished Scientist- State Council for Science & Technology, Dr. B. C. Roy

Laureate- Medical Council of India, Doctor of Philosophy & Science- Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chairman – The Madras

Bone Tumour Service and the President, Indian Orthopaedic Association (2005-06)

· Sir, at the outset the TNOA salutes your achievements over the last very many years during which you have tirelessly

toiled. Though the various awards you have received are jewels by themselves, I feel the post of President of IOA must be very

satisfying since you have been known to work for others. Your opinion on that…?

I am very happy to have been elected the Millennium President of Indian Orthopaedic Association. The associationwas started by the Leaders of Orthopaedics in early 50’s and since then this association has been growing and hasreached great heights. My academic and genetic father was the President in 1957 and history was created when I tookover as the President in 2006. This was the first time father and son have been the President of the Association. I amglad that I have been elected to this post in recognition of my work in Orthopaedic Oncology from my orthopaediccolleagues all over India.

· Can I call the Bone Bank your pet project and do you feel you have finally done it? How farther do you wish to carry it?

Yes, the bone bank has been my pet project. Adequate space has been allotted in the Tower Blocks in GovernmentGeneral Hospital. I still have a long way to go. The equipments for the bone bank have been ordered and the governmentis in the process of purchasing them. I am yet to bring an awareness about the bone donations among the doctors as wellas the society. Within the next decade, banked bone will be available for all hospitals requiring them within our State.

· One of the most revered, admired and accomplished person is our President Shri. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. How was it to stand

beside him at your moment of success?

President Shri. A .P.J. Abdulkalam, is the missile man of Indian Science. It was a soul satisfying experience to standbeside him at the moment of my success and receive the award from him. His words “Indigenous technology developmentin the medical field based on locally available resources will bring affordable health care within the reach of thecommon man in India” were the source of my inspiration on developing the custom mega prosthesis and spreading theconcept all over India. His message “We are all born with a divine fire within us. Our efforts should be to give wings tothis fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness” gave the quantum leap for me to progress in my work.

· Every one would have loved to have an illustrious and caring father like the doyen of Orthopaedics, Prof. M. Natarajan as

he is fondly remembered. What was his contribution to your success?

I am blessed to be the son of great souls Prof. M. Natarajan and Mrs. N. Janaki. I adored my father with singleminded devotion. His contribution to my success has been phenomenal. Hard work, strict discipline, doing one’s duty andpatience was all that he taught me. These were the reasons for my success.

· Learning, teaching and finally governing the speciality of your choice as a student, teacher and now the HOD of the

Department of Orthopaedics in the most revered Madras Medical College, you must certainly be one of the luckiest. How do feel

about that and what do you wish to give back to the Institute?

I have been walking through the corridor of Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital as anundergraduate and postgraduate student (10 years), Tutor, Assistant Professor (10 years), Additional Professor (4 years)and Head of the Department (1 year). It gives me great feeling to have risen from the Foot of the Department to theHead of the Department. I feel that all that I learnt in Orthopaedics was from the poor and middle class patients attending

the hospital. Now, I feel that all my expertise should be given back to the same patients attending the hospitals. Furtherall my skills should be used to train the younger generation in various aspects of Orthopaedics.

· Your International reputation is something to be awed at. What are your plans to further the already growing advances in

Orthopaedics to Orthopaedic fraternity on the whole in Tamilnadu?

We are living in the era of sub specialisation within the speciality of Orthopaedics. I am keen that during myperiod sub specialization should be accepted and started by the Government in this premier teaching Institute in TamilNadu. In the next decade, we should have several sub specialities like Spine, Orthopaedic Oncology, Arthroplasty,Arthroscopy, etc. in the Institute of Orthopaedics, with me retiring as its Director!

· Your spiritual life is well known. Tell us about your spiritual Guru and how it has changed your life?

My spiritual guru is Swamy Sukhabodhananda of “Manase Relax Please “has awakened my inner soul. Life aftermeeting him has become Simple, Enjoyable and Meaningful. He has taught me that we can continue to do our duty andalso lead a spiritual life. Each one of us have to discover our true Spiritual self, express our unique talent and servefellow human beings with abundant love to generate all that we want and ensure success.

· About the various awards you have received, Sir?

Well I have won appreciation for all my hard work and sincerity as reflected by the various awards I have beenhonoured with.
