  • The Singapore Structural Steel Society continued in strength and growth through her 26th year with a new high of 139 corporate members, 20 honourary fellows, 428 ordinary members and 71 associate members. SSSS played a crucial role in upgrading the capabilities of structural steel practitioners at both professional and supervisory levels. This is achieved though our continuous education and training programme, including the Structural Steel Supervisor (StS) and Structural Steel Engineers (StR) Courses, seminars, evening talks and site visits, organised throughout the year. To date, we have 888 steel supervisors and 380 steel engineers who have passed out the StS and StR courses. The self-regulatory Steel Fabrication Accreditation scheme, endorsed by BCA, boasts 102 accredited steel fabricators, and are strongly recommended by BCA to perform structural steel fabrication and erection works at construction sites. The society is actively involved in national workgroups and committees, contributing to the technical advancement of the industry. For instance, we are taking the lead in helping the industry to switch from the British Codes to Eurocodes for structural design and construction relating to steel and steel concrete composites. We have completed the Eurcode 3-4 Annexes. In a blink of an eye, I have been President of SSSS for 6 years and it is now time for me to pass the baton to the next candidate. Over the past years, I have seen the industry through recession and boom and we have weathered together and emerged stronger. I would like to thank the council for giving me the support to lead the society to what it is today. Tan Tian Chong President

SSSS is taking the lead in helping the industry to switch from the British Codes to Eurocodes for structural design and construction relating to steel and steel concrete composites. We have completed the Eurcode 3-4 Annexes. SSSS hopes to reproduce a copy for all members.

    Pacific Structural Steel Conference (PSSC)

The Pacific Structural Steel Conference is a major initiative bringing together expertise in structural steel research, education and construction from the Pacific Rim and beyond to promote cooperation among the structural steel associations and communication on development in the field of steel structures. It originated in 1986 when the New Zealand Heavy Engineering Research Association organized the inaugural conference. The PSSC, held every three years , has been hosted in Australia, 1989; Japan, 1992; Singapore , 1995; Korea , 1998; China, 2001; America, 2004; New Zealand , 2007 and China, 2011. I am happy to inform that we have successfully bid to bring PSSC back to Singapore in 2013.

Local and International Relations: We continue with our effort to raise greater awareness of the Society locally by maintaining closer contact with local steel industry leaders as well as sponsoring book prizes and supporting students activities for tertiary institutions like NTU, NUS, Singapore Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic. We also create an international presence by organizing and supporting international conferences organized by other national steel societies and associations. Contribution to National Standardisation: Members of the Society continue to contribute as volunteers in relevant SPRING Singapores technical committees and working groups. SSSS is also involved as a member of the Civil & Structural Working Group and leading the Structural Steel task groups in the development of the National Annexes to the Euro-codes on Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite design and construction. Publications and Websites: During the year, we published two issues of Steel News and Notes and will continue to provide quality newsletters to all members. The Societys website is www.ssss.org.sg. Members may find out more information about the Singapore Structural Steel Society by visiting the website.
