Simon Marks “Big River, Little Stories”

Regional Victorian Tour

Simon Marks has reunited with some of Australia’s finest musicians, including Ben Franz (The Waifs) and Syd Green (19-Twenty) to record his fourth release - “Big River, Little

Stories”.

Marks began his career with an invite to perform at the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival and from here, this engaging live performer has toured the globe and Australia playing to a loyal saddlebag of followers at festivals, concerts, bars and everything in between. Recently relocating to a small town on the banks of the Murray R8iver, inspired Marks to write and record “Big River, Little Stories”. Life among the majestic red gums by the river’s edge evoked the albums theme, based around the area, its people and

the move to life in country Victoria.

Barefoot Bowls

The Barefoot Bowlers got into action again

last week. Play started on time thanks to

everyone getting their act together and arriving

punctually and following the presentation of

the memory stick to the forgetful trio.

Once again the music kept the atmosphere

buoyant, and the hamburgers were gratefully

received to appease the hunger pangs of those

who had come along without having eaten or

those who just succumbed to the mouth-

watering aroma of the BBQ.

At the end of the two games there were four

teams who had won their two games so the

winners were decided on a count back of

points. The Miller’s Ag team spearheaded by

Nev came away winners although there was

plenty of talent on display and the Club

President and Selection Committee were busy

trying to coerce players into signing the

membership form. Charli was an obvious

recruit with her cartwheeling talent, a foreseen

asset in distracting the opposition.

With two more nights of competition the

teams are heatedly vying for aggregate

championship points as well as nightly

success.

Thanks again to Nola, Jean, Robyn, Andy,

Lionel and Kim for contributing to the success

of the night in various ways.

60 & Over

Due to the extreme heat conditions last week the 60 and Over competition was not played; a very sensible decision. So that means there is no call for a chook joke, nor a biscuit or towel joke. In fact the story goes that farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs. It was so hot the corn stalks were turning into popcorn out in the paddocks. But let’s not knock the weather; if it didn’t change once in a while nine tenths of people wouldn’t be able to start a conversation. This week the gents play at Pyramid Hill so here’s hoping they can make the most of the home ground advantage. Good luck, guys.

Saturday Pennant Bring on the cold beers, and the wet towels, and the ice buckets, and thank heavens (more specifically, thanks to Marie S.) for the icy-poles that were handed around with flourish by Jan who was snapped in action by the roving photographer. It was a scorcher of a day on Saturday when we took on the Barham Sports folk who must have left home before the birds got into song. Well…, I suppose the tempera-ture didn’t top forty but the diabolical humidity made the conditions very trying. Thankfully we started play at 9:30 and we were finished before the main heat of the day. Wisely, Division 3 matches were cancelled so they were given a reprieve from the heat. As fortune would have it the sauna bath was worth all the effort as we came away with a pleasing win. Fred’s team (Fred, Laurie, Marie N & Bill) got away to a flying start and were never headed. They completed the match with a 16 shot victory (30-14) which proved to be highly advanta-geous.

Beau, Marie S., Kate & Graham were in a tight tussle with little between them and the lead see-sawing throughout. Their 3 shot win (29-26) sealed the deal. Lionel, Ian, Jean & Andy went from riches to rags. They were unable to repeat their great performance from the previous week when they were the lynchpins securing the overall win. They lost 13-27 and, being first to finish, meant there were repeated calculations being made as we nervously defended the winning margin. The 72-65 (5 shot) score was very satisfying as we headed into the Clubrooms to escape the heat and enjoy the sandwiches. Special mention must be made of the guys who prepared the greens and surrounds in the difficult and hot conditions. Watching Andy do the mowing, Graham mark the lines, Ian S. mow the surrounds and Allan do the rolling certainly reinforced the fact that if our bowls don’t roll exactly as we want them, we should refrain from criticising the greens and just appreci-ate the effort others put into making them as good as possible. Thanks, guys. Your work is definitely appreciated.

Board Meeting The next meeting of the Board is

scheduled for Tuesday 7th March

at 8:00pm. Please note the

change of date due to our Elders

Pairs Tournament the following

day, 8th March

Mid-week Pennant:

Last week saw the play off of Semi-

finals 1 & 2 at Cohuna Golf. This

week In Division 1 Barham Services

and Kerang played off in the

Preliminary final, while in Division

2 Cohuna and Barham Services were

in action. Those who went in support

of the competing teams witnessed

some magnificent bowling and

intense competition. Seemingly,

Barham Services had a win under

their belts but Kerang came home

with a mighty rush and took the lead

in the last few ends. Jean Fairchild’s

team from BS won 30-17, but to

nullify this great score Gayle

Teasdale’s Kerang team defeated

Helen Pedretti 33-15 and Helen

McBain’s team beat Joan Goodwin’s

team 27-26. This meant that Kerang

ousted Barham Services from the

Division 1 finals series with a 77- 71

(6 shots clear) win. It was a

wonderful spectacle of bowling by

all concerned. Kerang now front up

against Cohuna in the Grand final

next week. In Division 2, it was also

a close contest with Barham

Services scraping home by 5 shots

(60-55) in their match against

Cohuna. Barham Services will meet

Leitchville in the Grand final. The

Grand final will be played at Cohuna

Golf next Wednesday, 22nd Feb.

Good luck and good bowling to all

playing.
