EDITORIAL VERBIER FESTIVAL FOUNDER & DIRECTOR
For 25 years the greatest musicians in the world have been brought together in a unique Alpine setting by the Verbier Festival, all sharing a mutual passion and a common vision for music, across the generations.
Bagnes, Verbier’s mountainous municipality, offers the most generous welcome to the Verbier Festival, our staff, our artists and audiences. The whole area contributes, from the shops and restaurants in Verbier to our partners, and our friends in the local area, all of us together making it such a special event. The economic impact on the region is significant, ten times higher than the amount taken by the Festival in subsidy and sponsorship, and a testiment to the Festival’s continuing success.
To celebrate these 25 years of music, I have put together a programme which shows the Verbier Festival at its very best. Valery Gergiev, will open the Festival conducting the Verbier Festival Orchestra having taken up the post of Music Director this anniversary year. Christoph Eschenbach will conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Iván Fischer, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and there are visits from leading conductors Zubin Mehta and Gianandrea Noseda amongst others.
The world’s great instrumentalists will appear this summer, including Elisabeth Leonskaya performing Beethoven’s last piano sonatas and Daniil Triofonov in a Chopin tribute concert. Violinist Ilya Gringolts will perform Paganini, and Bartók’s glorious Sonata for solo violin will see Maxim Vengerov return to the Verbier stage.
In Salle des Combins, violinist Leonidas Kavakos performs Berg’s concerto ‘To the Memory of an Angel’, and, at the piano, Evgeny Kissin is soloist in the second piano concerto by Rachmaninov. Radu Lupu performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, Yuja Wang the third and fifth concerti by Prokofiev, and the amazing Mischa Maisky, who reached age 70 years in January, and is one of the Festival’s most loyal collaborators, performs Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. These great soloists will also be found away from the main stage to perform in chamber music recitals together—something that has become a trademark of the Verbier Festival.
We celebrate young talent with first appearances in Verbier from two 23-year-old pianists: Seong-Jin Cho and Aaron Pilsan, both recent major competition winners. Graduates from our own Academy will also perform, including the wonderful cellist Kian Soltani, as will pianists Sahun 'Sam' Hong and Do-Hyun Kim, prizewinners of The Vendome Prize, which took place during the 2017 Festival.
A gala concert to celebrate the Verbier Festival over the last 25 years will take place on 25 July featuring a roll-call of the great artists who have made the Festival what it is today. Martha Argerich, Sergei Babayan, Lisa Batiashvili, Gautier and Renaud Capuçon, Martin Fröst, Thomas Quasthoff, András Schiff, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Pinchas Zukerman and many more will all join us to celebrate. I hope that you will be one of our guests in this special year too.

A NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR FOR THE VERBIER FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA
The Verbier Festival is delighted to welcome Valery Gergiev as Music Director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra.
Since his first appearance in Verbier in 2004, when he led the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra for the Festival's opening concert, Valery Gergiev has been a regular guest and has always brought the very best out of our young Orchestra musicians,.Every year the world's finest musicians aged 18 to 28 are given the opportunity to work with the world's great conductors in a professional environment by being part of the Verbier Festival Orchestra.
The Mariinsky Theatre director returned to the Festival in 2008 and, by 2010, with a highly-acclaimed performance of Strauss’ Salome, had built a significant audience in Verbier, He has returned to Salle des Combins almost annually sinceGergiev's appearance in 2016 was perhaps his most memorable, with a rare performance at the piano alongside Denis Matsuev and Daniil Trifonov for Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos, followed by a blistering performance of Ravel’s Bolero, performed in front of the composer Rodion Shchedrin in tribute to his late wife, Assoluta Prima Ballerina Maïa Plisetskaïa.

25th EDITION IN DEPTH CELEBRATORY CONCERTS
For this 25th anniversary, the Verbier Festival gathers many of the legendary musicians who have made the Festival what it is today to celebrate a quarter of a century of shared excellence in music.
Over 30 soloists will take part in a grand gala concert at Salle des Combins. The Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra musicians will join this big Verbier family for this secret, celebratory programme that combs the great repertoire to offer memorable musical surprises. It will be an opportunity to reacquaint with Martha Argerich, a leading figure of the Festival since her first appearance in 1997, who makes something of a comeback in Valais following a three year absence, among many other stars who will contribute to this milestone event.
Valery Gergiev will conduct the opening concert of this anniversary Festival. The conductor brings together several young promising talents of the new generation along with the Verbier Festival Orchestra musicians. With 19th to 21th century masterpieces—his favourite repertoire—Gergiev conducts the young violinist Daniel Lozakovich, 17 year-old and former Verbier Academy musician, who will make his fouth official Festival appearance, as well as the young pianist George Li, sensational winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition (2015), also well-known to Verbier audiences.
Valery Gergiev has chosen Russian music traditional and new, performing Sheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as a 2009 work by his friend and countryman Rodion Shchedrin. In this centenary year of Leonard Bernstein, Gergiev also conducts Glitter and be Gay from Bernstein’s only opera Candide.

LYRIC CONCERTS AND OPERA
Like every year, the 25th Verbier Festival showcases the most beautiful of all instruments: the human voice.
The vocal programme will feature two of the peaks of the sacred repertoire: Haydn’s Creation and Fauré’s Requiem. Impressed by Handel’s work for the London Court during his trips to England in the 1790s, Joseph Haydn, already in his 60s, dedicated his final years to the composition of The Creation, his final masterpiece. Also a late work for Gabriel Fauré, the Requiem written in 1888 conveys a peaceful vision of death. "My Requiem was said to express not so much the idea of a dreadful death but rather, as someone called it, a death lullaby. And this is the way I feel death: similar to a joyful delivery, the longing for happiness above and beyond." For his first season as Music Director of the VFO, the Valery Gergiev has chosen to train young musicians on verisma operas with the great masterpiece by Francesco Cilea, Adriana Lecouvreur. Soprano Tatiana Serjan, a Mariinsky soloist, makes her Verbier Festival debut, singing the eponymous role of the ill-fated diva, and Ekaterina Semenchuk plays Princess Bouillon, her cruel rival in what became one of the most famous crime stories of the 18th century.
Another great tragedy of the Italian repertoire will see the young singers of the Academy interpret Verdi’s Rigoletto. The singers train extensively for three weeks as part of the Academy's Atelier Lyrique, where they are coached and take part in masterclasses by top-ranking singers, some of whom also perform in the Festival. They give a performance of the opera on the final day with the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra, conducted for a second year by Russian conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky.
South-African soprano Pretty Yende returns to the Verbier Festival in the opening concert, singing Glitter and be Gay from Leonard Bernstein’s opera Candide. Yende made her debut at La Scala, Milan, as Museta in Puccini’s La bohème in 2012. The following year, with New York’s Metropolitan Opera, she firmly established herself in the international opera world when she stepped in for in indisposed Nino Machaidze in the role of Adèle in Rossini's opera, Le Comte Ory.

STAR SOLOISTS
The world’s great pianists from across the generations perform at the Verbier Festival this year, as soloists with orchestra and in solo and chamber music recitals. Radu Lupu returns to the Festival to perform Beethoven's fourth piano concerto with conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy; he first appeared at the Festival in 1996. This concert will be available live on medici.tv, a rare live broadcast for Lupu, who normally doesn’t allow such recordings.
Grigory Sokolov returns to Verbier for a fifth year, having first appeared in 2013. He performs a recital at the Église, in what has become a much-anticipated regular feature of the Verbier Festival’s programme.
Another relatively recent collaborator in Verbier, pianist Andràs Schiff, will be back for the fourth consecutive year since he was introduced to the Festival by his friend Gábor Takács-Nagy. He has devised a programme of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, and will be joined by the soloists Vilde Frang and Tabea Zimmermann, together with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. Last year his recital at Salle des Combins was one of the highlights of the summer.
Evgeny Kissin makes his 21st trip to the Festival for a recital of Chopin, Schumann, Scriabin and Debussy, and a performance of one of his favourite works, Rachmaninov's second piano concerto, with the VFO and conductor Zubin Mehta.
The younger generation of pianists is showcased this year in Verbier too. The Vendome Prize serves as a stepping stone for pianists ready to launch a career. In partnership with Verbier, the competition offers its winners the opportunity to perform at the Festival. This year Do Hyun Kim and Sahun 'Sam' Hong, joint prizewinners (2017), each give their first recitals at the Festival. The 24 year-old Korean pianist Seong Jin Cho, winner of Warsaw's Chopin Competition (2015), performs a solo recital of Chopin, Debussy and Schumann, and a chamber music recital with 25 year-old cellist Andrei Ioniță.
VIOLINFrom the young Daniel Lozakovich to Eduard Wulfson, generations of renowned violonists have crossed each other’s paths at the Verbier Festival over the years. This year Maxim Vengerov and Ilya Gringolts will perform together in recital; Janine Jansen will perform Mozart’s G major concerto with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra; and Leonidas Kavakos is the soloist in Berg’s Violin Concerto.

POP & FUNK
Rufus Wainwright can be guaranteed to switch genres with perfect aplomb—and to surprise. This return performance also features string quartet Brooklyn Rider and soprano Anne Sophie von Otter.

SOIRÉES PROKOFIEV MISHA MAISKYCARTE BLANCHE
To mark the 125th birthday of Sergei Prokofiev, the Festival features the great composer eight times throughout its programme. Vadim Repin, Andreï Korobeinikov, Ilya Gringolts and Maxim Vengerov have each opted for his chamber music, while conductor Gianandrea Noseda dedicates two entire evenings to his lyrical music. The first concert features a performance of the composer's 'Classical' symphony as well as his first two piano concerti interpreted by Denis Matsuev. The second invites us to delight in the orchestral suite of Love for Three Oranges and the dazzling Yuja Wang at the piano for the third and fifth concerti. Wang will be joined by her long time musical collaborators Leonidas Kavakos, Martin Fröst and Pamela Frank in a performance of the Overture on Hebrew Themes at the Église where, in 2008, her Verbier experience began.
Mischa Maisky is given carte blanche for a chamber music recital featuring his children Lily and Sascha—respectively pianist and violinist, who are regular collaborators at Verbier and around the globe. Together, they celebrate the Festival's 25th birthday and the cellist's own 70th birthday in a chamber music concert featuring Beethoven, Franck and Mendelssohn. Carte blanche has given to the magnificent cellist who will perform several chamber music masterpieces by Beethoven, Mendelssohn or César Franck that are close to his heart.
