#EuroBasket2017

FIBA EuroBasket 2017 is the 40th edition of Europe’s premier basketball competition and for the second time in its history will be hosted by four countries. From 31 August to 17 September, the best players on the European continent will come together in the cities of Cluj-Napoca (ROU), Helsinki (FIN), Tel Aviv (ISR) and Istanbul (TUR) in the quest for European glory. 24 teams begin the journey, but only 16 will be appearing in Istanbul for the Final Phase. With glory, will also come the right to hold aloft the newly-designed Nikolai Semashko trophy.

The following teams have qualified for FIBA EuroBasket 2017: Finland, Israel, Romania, and Turkey as host countries; Croatia, France, Lithuania, Serbia, and Spain as Rio 2016 participants; Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, and Latvia as FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament participants Belgium, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Slovenia as winners of their

respective FIBA EuroBasket 2017 Qualifiers groups; Great Britain, Iceland, Montenegro and Ukraine as the four best second-placed teams of the

FIBA EuroBasket 2017 Qualifiers.

FIBA EuroBasket 2017

The logo draws inspiration from the ideal that basketball is its own universe, and at the centre of that universe is the EuroBasket trophy, with Europe the brightest shining star. The distance from north to south between the four venues - Finland (Helsinki), Romania (Cluj-Napoca), Turkey (Istanbul) and Israel (Tel Aviv) - and the uniquely different geographical and cultural traditions that each of the hosts bring to the event played a major role in the logo concept.

#EuroBasket2017

FIBA EuroBasket Through The YearsFIBA EuroBasket is celebrating its 40th edition in 2017. Last year’s event marked 80 years of competition, paved with legendary players and impressive milestones. We take you for a drive down memory lane!

Lithuania were the first team to win back-to-back titles, clinching gold in 1937 and 1939. Interestingly, the team were led by a player-coach on both occasions: Lithuanian Americans Feliksas Kriauciunas (Phil Krause) and Pranas Lubinas (Frank Lubin).

Back in the 1930s, Egypt was the only country in Africa with an independent basketball association. With the Mediterranean considered a part of Europe by FIBA and FIBA EuroBasket practically the only international competition they could take part in, Egypt participated in five FIBA EuroBaskets from 1937 to 1953. They won bronze in 1947 and followed it up with gold in 1949, when hosting the event in Cairo.

Belgian Eddy Terrace holds the record for most points scored in a single game, accumulating 63 points in Belgium’s 90-48 win over Albania at FIBA EuroBasket 1957.

Radivoj Korac was one of the dominant figures of the early FIBA EuroBasket days, topping all scorers at four consecutive tournaments, from 1959-1965. In 1965, he shared the honours with Spaniard Emiliano Rodriguez. Nikos Galis is the only other player to take home the top scorer title four times, doing so in 1983, 1987, 1989 and 1991, averaging each time over 30 points per game.

Soviet Union are the undisputed leaders on the all-time medallists list, finishing on the podium in each of their 21 participations. Their trophy case includes 14 gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Between 1957 and 1971, the Soviet team lifted the trophy eight times in a row. Seven Soviet gold medals came under legendary head coach Alexander Gomelsky, making him the most decorated coach in FIBA EuroBasket history.

Kresimir Cosic made his FIBA EuroBasket debut in 1967 and went on to play in a total of nine Final Rounds, more than any other player. He collected seven medals on the way (three gold, three silver, one bronze), a feat that was only matched by Soviet legend Sergei Belov (four gold, two silver, one bronze).

The inaugural FIBA EuroBasket was held in 1935, with ten teams participating. Latvia recorded three wins in as many games to lift the trophy.

Nikos Galis has stamped his name on FIBA EuroBasket as one of the most proficient scorers in European basketball history. He contributed 37 points per game in Greece’s run to the title in 1987, a benchmark that has not been matched by any other player.

Germany were the last team to win FIBA EuroBasket on home soil, doing so in Munich in 1993. Svetislav Pesic served as head coach of the German team, and won a second gold medal while on the sidelines for Yugoslavia in 2001. He is the only coach to have won the title with two different countries.

Panagiotis Giannakis has a special spot in the history books after orchestrating Greece both on and off the court, winning the gold medal in 1987 and repeating the achievement as head coach in 2005.

France celebrated their first FIBA EuroBasket title in 2013 with their 36th attempt. When it comes to Final Round appearances, the French are leading with 37 so far, closely followed by Italy with 36.

In 1975, Kresimir Cosic became the first player to be named FIBA EuroBasket MVP for a second time, having previously claimed the honour in 1971. The only other player to have two MVP awards to his name is Pau Gasol (2009 and 2015).

At FIBA EuroBasket 2015, Tony Parker, Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol surpassed Nikos Galis on the all-time top scorers list to move into the first three spots. Parker is the all-time leading scorer with a total of 1104 points scored.

The design adorns Molten’s GL7X basketball, which is the official ball for all FIBA-sanctioned international play.

FIBA has signed a partnership agreement with Junckers, a leading manufacturer of solid wood sports flooring, to serve as Official Technical Supplier of FIBA EuroBasket 2017.
