Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts The Group and its Philosophy Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, one of the world’s premier hotel companies, currently owns and/or manages 76 hotels under the Shangri-La, Kerry and Traders brands, with a room inventory of over 30,000. Over four decades the group has established its brand hallmark of ‘hospitality from the heart. The group has a substantial development pipeline with upcoming projects in mainland China, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Turkey and United Kingdom. Opening On March 2, 2009 Shangri-La's Boracay Resort and Spa opened its doors for the world to discover its 219 rooms and villas sprawled on a vast 12-hectare land. It is the first and only five-star international deluxe resort to open on the famed island, and is the fifth Shangri-La hotel in the Philippines. The other properties managed by Shangri-La in the country are in Makati, Edsa, Mactan, and Traders Hotel in Manila.

Overview If there is a destination that will be a kin to paradise on earth, a best kept secret of the Philippines is a small island called Boracay. Known for its powdery white sands and aquamarine waters, the island of Boracay has regularly been named among the world’s best, from National Geographic magazine to the TripAdvisor website. Apart from the colorful markets and bustle of the island’s popular white beach, is a tranquil nature reserve on Boracay’s northern tip, a place that one can call his own haven, his own Shangri-La. Shangri - La’s Boracay Resort and Spa introduces a new level of luxury to the beautiful island of Boracay. The architect of the resort is Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) and the interior design was created by LTW Design Works. The accommodations are designed with modern sensibilities expressed in indigenous materials, from the Abaca weave rugs to the accent lighting made of local capiz shells. There is so much of the culture of the Philippines that was incorporated to both the exterior and interior design of the resort. Marrying luxury and comfort with a reverence for nature, the 12-hectare resort encompasses 219 rooms including 36 villas and suites; comprehensive leisure facilities; 350 meters of secluded beach front; and a thriving ecosystem of diverse, even rare, flora and fauna. With two private beachfronts and an infinity pool, the resort offers a myriad of recreational activities. Those looking to soothe weary senses can head over to CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La. A variety of dining options of different cuisines is located within the resort. May it be a family holiday or simply a quiet retreat, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa is the perfect paradise destination.

Unique Arrival Experience

The luxury of first-class facilities and conveniences goes beyond the resort and is extended to guests on their journey to the Island. Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa has refined what used to be a tedious series of air, land and water transfers to an unrivaled experience of comfort and exclusivity. Upon landing at the Caticlan Airport, the guest is at once received by a representative and escorted to the van and directly to a private lounge where refreshments and other welcome amenities await. At the exclusive jetty port area, guests are whisked off by Shangri-La’s speedboat where a mere fifteen minute cruise is all that stands between you and paradise.

Guests will no longer have to endure a communal boat ride at a public pier, a lengthy land transfer traversing Boracay’s one and only road from the public pier to the resort – the usual route taken by Boracay visitors.

Guestrooms and Suites

The main building houses the guestrooms and suites. Room categories range from Deluxe, Deluxe Seaview, Premier Family Seaview to a Seaview Suite. Situated close to the recreation centres as well as the all day dining café, guests travelling with children may find a stay in these rooms very convenient.

The Deluxe Room is designed with modern sensibilities expressed through indigenous materials, from the abaca weave rug to the accent lighting made with local capiz shells. Guests may enjoy verdant landscaped garden views from a private veranda. Situated at the South Wing are the Deluxe Seaview Rooms which offer spectacular views of the ocean and sunset from the private balcony. Located closest to Punta Bunga Beach, guests are just a short walk and a few flights of steps away from the white sand and crystal clear waters. Both Deluxe and Deluxe Seaview Rooms measure 63 square meters. Ideal for families and groups travelling together are the beautifully-appointed Premier Family Seaview Rooms. The room is bigger, measuring 66 square meters which can fit two queen-size beds that accommodate up to four persons. There is also a pull-out sofa bed for children. Located at the lower floors of the South Wing are the Seaview Suites which offer a 99-square meter spacious hideaway, including an outdoor whirlpool close enough to the beach to hear the music of the waves. Our luxury one-bedroom suite has a studio-type living room space which extends to the bedroom. All guestrooms and suites have a flat-screen television, a DVD player, an iPod dock, a writing desk and complimentary wi-fi and broadband Internet access. The bathrooms are marble-floored with two sinks, a separate rain shower and bath, and premium toiletries.

Villas

The expansive territory houses some of the country’s most indulgent and stylish accommodations. As a guest, your villa becomes our own vacation home. You will enjoy its ethnic elegance and sweeping views of the ocean in the comfort of your balcony. The Treehouse villas sit atop the resort’s highest grounds, a perfect venue to revel in the spectacular view of the sea in the horizon. Each tree house villa is a two-storey structure measuring 216 square meters. The master’s bedroom is located at the lower floor. It is surrounded by glass windows that provide a panoramic seascape. The living room is on the upper level with an outdoor deck that has an al fresco Jacuzzi tub and daybeds for lounging and sun bathing. From this private balcony, you have the best views of Boracay’s breathtaking sunset. The Treehouse villa is a favorite accommodation of honeymooners seeking an idyllic retreat away from the maddening crowd.

Along with the Treehouse villas stand the Loft Villas, also intimately perched amidst the forested hillside and thriving foliage in the aptly named Tanawin (vista) area of the Resort. Loft Villas provide a homey and sphere that measure 216 square meters, with the master’s bedroom on one level and a living room with a pantry on the other. A lap pool beckons guests for a relaxing dip, and those who opt to stay-in can dine al fresco at their very own gazebo. The Pool Villa is a bungalow that has one bedroom while Villa Balani has two bedrooms. Each type has a private lap pool, a pergola for outdoor dining, an outdoor shower, and a daybed for relaxation. These villas are ideal for family vacations.

Architecture

A feast of local materials was an abundant resource for the designers of Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa. The resort was designed by Hawaii-based architect firm, WATG, and the interior by Singapore-based LTW Design Works. The spacious guestrooms and villas are furnished with the finest ethnic Filipino décor and native materials.

WATG used the island’s coral stone extensively on the exterior architecture and LTW applied this to the interior columns. The main building incorporates the open pavilions and pitched roof forms. They blend with the overall architectural form and allow views of the gardens and the ocean. Many stylistic flavors and trades were injected into the design, drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of the Philippines, from Spanish to tribal traditions. LTW’s brief was to create understated elegance, relaxed and contemporary space yet culturally-intriguing.

8

The inspiration for the arrival experience was the sea. The ocean view beyond the lobby evokes grandeur as guests walk into the main entrance from the Porte Cochere. Design elements such as the chandeliers inspired by Spanish ironworks flank the lobby, creating a very eye-catching feature and reinforcing a strong sense of arrival.

The LTW Team sought artwork from various regions of the Philippines, 3-meter-high tribal drums from the South, Gado jars, carved wooden sculptures ad more local handicrafts and trades. Decorative lamps add to the feel of the resort. Specially designed spot lighting helps to highlight design features and indigenous artworks. General ambient lighting also used to emphasize and reinforce the romantic, relaxed atmosphere. The natural environment was a direct influence on the color scheme and textural qualities of the space. Materials that related directly to the areas and creating a sense of place were the dominant textures and influences. LTW used local coconut shells, capiz shells, fossil stone laminates, adding many different layers of textures and interest to the spaces with forged iron anchoring the different design schemes. A calm neutral palette was used for styling the villas. Hand-woven textiles and jewelry from the tribes and wooden oars were framed as artwork. The interiors were deliberately designed with a strong residential feel to make the guests very comfortable.

9

Culinary Haven The idea is to be able to maximize a guest’s leisure time without the hassles of stepping out of the resort and going all the way to the main beach of Boracay, which is about 15 minutes away. At Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa, there is a variety of restaurants and bars that dot the resort, offering an array of dishes and drinks to suit different folks. The Lobby Lounge can be found a few steps away from the front desk at the main lobby. Its wide open interiors make it an amazing place to take in the view of the sea while sipping welcome drinks or the resort’s signature cocktails. A wine buffet is served for happy hour. It is striking to note that the dresses donned by the female service staff of the Lobby Lounge are made by celebrated Filipino designer Rajo Laurel.

Vintana restaurant is the resort’s all-day dining outlet serving international cuisine in buffet and ala carte menus. Start out with a scrumptious appetizer dish of salads or sushi, and head on to the main Asian courses. Top a full meal with the sweetest of treats from the pastry buffet to satisfy those sweet tooth cravings.

10

Down the main pool, one will find Cielo restaurant and its poolside bar counterpart, Alon. Dine al fresco in the cabanas situated all around the swimming pool area, and have a quick bite of pizzas and sandwiches. Let Alon Bar provide the drinks and entertainment as you bask under the sun at Banyugan beach, one of Shangri-La Boracay’s exclusive beachfronts. For a more dramatic setting, go to Sirena restaurant and Solana bar located by the scenic cliff-side. Sirena is the main seafood outlet where you can feast on the freshest catch from the sea, cooked exquisitely by the seasoned chefs of the resort.

Adjacent to Sirena is the Solana bar and lounge cabanas where sunset cocktails can be enjoyed with the sound of waves and live music as background.

Rima restaurant is located in the treetops, amidst the resort’s lush greenery. It redefines elegant dining on Boracay. It is the first on the island to serve Northern Italian cuisine. The fantastic view from its elevated area coupled with the warm lighting of the restaurant set the mood for romance and intimacy.

Weddings

The resort is a popular venue for destination weddings. The sparkle of the sapphire sea is a naturally gorgeous backdrop for the happy couple’s exchange of eternal vows. The Grand Ballroom makes for an ideal reception, with the option to hold a cocktail party at the ballroom veranda. For any kind of event, the service staff provides the legendary hospitality for which Shangri-La is world-renowned.

15

Corporate Social Responsibility Beyond the resort’s architectural and natural beauty, a commitment to the community and the environment has been embedded not just in the culture, but also in the very design of the way the resort operates. The Promise of Sustainability Situated in an island where potable water is a scarce resource, the resort employs its very own desalination plant. With this technology, the resort is able to treat salt water and convert it to clean, potable water safe for human consumption. Currently, the desalination plant supplies up to 30% of the resort’s water consumption at an effective low cost. Water is also recycled by the resort’s comprehensive sewer treatment system. This allows for wastewater to be treated and reused as flushing water in the toilets or irrigation water for flora maintenance. The same is true for storm water. Drains are strategically placed all over the resort to collect and feed the water straight into the sewer treatment system for recycling. For the building structure that is closer to the sea, storm water is collected in a soak away, which dissipates the water slowly, making water disposal as harmless to the environment as possible. Energy conservation measures for the resort go far beyond than just using energy efficient light bulbs. Technologically-advanced efficiency readers have been fitted into the electrical system, which not only evaluate the efficiency of energy usage, but also automatically adjust the system to ensure optimum use of electricity. With this, wasteful lapses in the electrical system are avoided. Mounted on the crown of every luxurious villa are solar panels, which takes charge of soaking the sun’s rays und using it to heat the water through a heat transfer system. For all the pumps that power the resort, a variable frequency drive is employed to control effectively the power supply, significantly minimizing wasteful surge needed for motor start up. The electricity consumption is closely monitored. The Promise of Preservation Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa is a haven for travelers from all over the world. Surrounded by an eco-reserve, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa recognizes its responsibility in creating a natural sanctuary for the marine life, flora and fauna that thrive on the island. During the resort’s inception stages, Haribon Foundation, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Philippine biodiversity, was commissioned to identify and survey the different species of plants that covered the property.

16

The resort believes that awareness is crucial in the preservation of the environment. At the heart of the resort’s main building is the Shangri-La Eco Center, promoting interactive learning for the young. Equipped with computers, fun activities, and colorful displays the center caters to inquisitive minds, eager to discover valuable information on the care of endangered animals native to the island, most notable of which is the Flying Fox, the largest fruit bat in the world, which can only be found on Boracay island. At the very tip of the resort, these bats have found their nesting ground. Throughout the construction stages and until today, the resort continues to work closely with the Friends of the Flying Foxes, a non-profit organization that looks after the endangered bats, to ensure the protection of the natural habitation of these rare mammals. A few meters into the sea from the private beachfront, is the Marine Sanctuary Restoration Project that the resort is actively involved in. Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa regularly organizes activities that encourage care for the environment. The resort has participated in World Coastal Care Day by gathering employees for a clean-up of the beaches fronting the hotel, and this has now turned into a regular activity that takes place once a week. The Promise of Community Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa is situated in a peaceful locale known as Barangay Yapak. The resort has organized various activities for the local community in the past years, many of which are in support of the children of the barangay. The support for the Barangay Yapak is further enhanced with the resort’s pledge to put bright students through high school by way of a scholarship fund. This pledge goes as far as giving the scholars the option of employment in the resort after graduation, to guarantee that they are able to secure a successful future for their families. As Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa celebrates its third year in operation, the thrust for meaningful corporate social responsibility projects can only grow stronger. As the resort’s General Manager Amit Oberoi puts it, “We constantly look for ways we can assist in creating initiatives to improve the environment in which we operate.” Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa offers a luxurious experience that goes well beyond paradise, where environmental protection, community involvement, and sustainable living are intricately woven into every guest’s stay.
