GOOD GAME !*

CHILDHOOD DREAM!
“I had forgotten that cycling could give me so many shivers. The stage from Tours to Saint-Amand-Montrond was even more exciting than the mountains, but it was on the flat!” This comment of a Tour follower at the end of the 100th edition reveals all the emotions that cycling has to offer. It glorifies the share of spontaneity that is expressed by the initiatives launched by the riders and teams that have a strong temperament. It opens perspectives to a cycling dedicated to audacity. Looking towards the next edition, we wish to bet on a return to childhood. The childhood of bike fanatics thrilled by the most unexpected attacks, whatever the terrain. That of the champions, moving (and efficient) when they remember that cycling is a game. Proof that hard work and seriousness don’t prevent freshness.
Total commitment is what we expect as soon as the first stages, set in Great-Britain, precisely in the Yorkshire County. The Tour left the island in 2007 after receiving an unforgettable welcome. The likes of Cavendish, Wiggins and Froome however hadn’t yet struck on the Tour! Forty years after the first visit of the Tour to England, this return should be a real challenge for Her Majesty’s riders.
It will also be the twentieth time, sixty years after a Grand Départ in Amsterdam that the show will start outside of the French borders. After what promises to be an eventful stay on the other side of the Channel, especially in the tough hill climbs before heading to Sheffield, the riders will need to be just as conquering as they return to mainland Europe. If one had to choose an unpredictable context, it would have to be the cobbled stones of Paris-Roubaix, on the course of the stage that will leave Ypres in Belgium and finish at Arenberg Porte du Hainaut. As we know, bravery doesn’t await altitude and will have to be expressed (with substantial benefits) during the Vosges stages, before the Alpine days to Chamrousse and Risoul. Anything can happen on the roads to Nîmes or to Bagnères-de-Luchon but it’ll then be on the occasion of the two altitude finishes at Saint-Lary-Soulan Plat d’Adet and Hautacam, after short but demanding stages that the mountaineers will battle it out. These opportunities will be decisive before the 54-kilometre time-trial between Bergerac and Périgueux, the shortest distance against the clock since this specific effort was introduced to the Tour back in 1934.

YORKSHIRE, TERRE D’INSPIRATION…
YORKSHIRE, LAND OF INSPIRATION…
The atmosphere and beauty of the County of Yorkshire gives a constant inspiration to travel. Among the native heroes of the area is Captain James Cook, one of the explorers who gave a new face to the world by discovering New-Zealand, New Caledonia and the Isles of Hawaï. Crossing the seas will be a lot more peaceful for the riders of the Tour who will also discover new lands on the occasion of this twentieth Grand Départ outside of the French borders. Through a Tour of Yorkshire, during two stages, the pack will have a taste of what this sensational territory has to offer: stunningly pure nature once in the Yorkshire Dales, a constantly renewed vitality in the heart of the cities that has marked the history of the country. The Yorkshire atmosphere takes the visitor back into time at the heart of the novels written by the Brontë sisters that might even inspire some riders as they cross through the village of Haworth. The cities of Leeds and Sheffield, two major places of the industrial development during the 19th century, will play a central role in the Tour’s stay in Yorkshire. Their history in sports often put them in the limelight thanks to the football clubs of both cities that have conquered a total of eight league titles. While in far lower divisions, Sheffield FC will remain forever the first football club in the world… created back in 1857! In terms of cycling, destiny seems to have struck. Brian Robinson first British stage winner on the Tour and Barry Hoban who won eight others are both from Yorkshire. Time has come to now turn to 2014.

CYCLING THE BRITISH WAY: TRADITION AND … VISION
In the Tour de France album, British cycling was occasionally represented by valorous pioneers. The likes of Robinson, Simpson and Hoban founded a cycling history that Cavendish, Wiggins and Froome built on from, in a modern way.
Looking closely, the roots of British cycling go far back. The first cycling race, between Paris and Saint-Cloud in 1868, was won by an English expatriate called James Moore! On the other side of the Channel, a time-trialling tradition rapidly conquered riders. The fever of beating records even attracted unknown cyclists who then had to face a long period when road races were forbidden. In such a context, seeing Bill Burl and Charles Holland show up at the start of the 1937 Tour was almost heroic. Later, the path set by the first ever Brit Tour stage winner, Brian Robinson was used in a tragic way by Tom Simpson who died racing on the sides of the Mont Ventoux in 1967. The following day, his compatriot, Barry Hoban won the stage in Sète as a tribute to his room mate.Based on the heritage of those glorious old timers, the British cycling school went even further. On the day of his first appearance on the Tour in 1994, Chris Boardman claimed the prologue. In the same outstanding fashion, David Millar captured the first Yellow Jersey of 2000. The Scotsman was to become the witness and even one of the indirect actors of the British success story. With his 25 stage wins, Mark Cavendish never forgets to insist that his first meeting with David Millar on the Isle of Man played a decisive role in the start to his career. In the same way, the 2011 World Champion probably inspired many, exactly like Bradley Wiggins who became a Tour hero at an older age.The two-time individual pursuit Olympic Champion, fourth of the Tour in 2009 owes a lot of his glory to Dave Brailsford and the efficiency of the Sky project. Guided by the idea of applying to road cycling the same methods that made
track riders so successful, the head and brain of the team honoured his bet by putting one of his men on the highest step of the podium. In 2012, Bradley Wiggins accomplished a dream designed by Brailsford. Doing so Sir Brad showed the way to his team mate Chris Froome who applied the Sky method with even more temperament in 2013. Her majesty’s men have conquered the summits!

Leeds was an important stronghold of the textile industry. After the wool that was woven there, the fabric of the Yellow Jersey will mobilise the attention of the riders. Until now, the sports fanatics would mainly be stirred by the white and blue colours of Leeds United, Premiere league champions back in 1992 thanks to the help of Monsieur Eric Cantona. Well before that, the city was the birth place of one of the pioneers of women’s cycling: back in the sixties, Beryl Burton indeed claimed seven World titles (track and road).

A newcomer on the map of the race, Harrogate can consider itself as indirectly tied to the Tour. The town is indeed linked to Bagnères-de-Luchon, one of the most visited cities of the Pyrenees… since 1910. Like its distant associate, Harrogate owes its development to the thermal industry. It also has experience in terms of cycling as a regular stage city of the Milk Race, the forerunner of the Tour of Britain. Before becoming an impressive stage winner on the Tour de France, Djamolidine Abdoujaparov had triumphed in Harrogate during the 1986 edition.

•This fi rst act of the 101st Tour de France will take the pack to the splendid Yorkshire Dales National park. It’ll also be the northernmost stage in the history of the Tour. But other than geographical considerations, the fi rst Yellow Jersey at stake in Harrogate, at the end of an uphill fi nal straight, promises a gruelling battle between the sprinters.

Well before inspiring the fi nal name of the most populated town in the United-States, York developed from a Roman city. Its antique name, Eburacum, actually links it to Evry, another stage city of the 2014 Tour, where the riders will take off one last time, three weeks later. Since that period, York has welcomed the professional cycling pack on several occasions during the Milk Race or the Tour of Britain. The last visit was back in 2009 for a stage conquered by Australian Chris Sutton.

Ninth city of the United Kingdom, Sheffi eld is for many regarded as the World snooker capital, hosting the World Championships, highlight of the season, since 1927.But it’s not all about rolling on green felt in Sheffi eld: child of the town, Malcolm Elliott, learned cycling the hard way on the local roads, before capturing three stage wins on the Vuelta a Espana at the end of the eighties. At that time, the British sprinter made a name for himself in most of the cities of the country with a total of 17 stage victories at the Milk Race.

An intense contest will start with the climb up Holme Moss and will continue until the top of the fi nal hill with under fi ve kilometres to go. A total of 3400 m of uphill portions have been counted on this demanding stage and most of them in the last 30 kilometres. A British version of Liège-Bastogne-Liège!

Prince William and his wife Kate also have the title of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The city also shines thanks to the prestige of its university. Its former students also reached excellence in terms of sports. They were indeed the fi rst, in 1856, to put down on paper the rules of the game of football. Oar in hand, the strong gentlemen of Cambridge dominate the most prestigious rowing race of the year, The Boat Race, against Oxford each spring, since 1829. One can therefore expect a glorious page of cycling history to be written on route to London.

On several occasions, the British capital found itself at the heart of the sports world, hosting for example the Olympic Games (1908, 1948 and 2012). For the cycling fans, the way London welcomed the pack of the Tour during the 2007 Grand Départ will remain in the minds of many. From the team presentation at Trafalgar Square to Fabian Cancellara’s time-trial victory in front of Buckingham Palace and the solemn start of stage 1 on Tower Bridge, the riders were boosted by a crowd that hadn’t yet witnessed the exploits of Cavendish, Wiggins or Froome… Promising for 2014!

Among the nicknames given to the coastal resort, “Paradise of sports” underlines the diversity of activities set up at Le Touquet. One of the oldest golf courses was designed there back in 1904, while Suzanne Lenglen won the local tennis tournament in 1913. Later, Thierry Sabine launched the Enduro bike race in 1975. The huge beaches and windy conditions inspired the creation of the sand yacht, a machine conceived by local man, Henry Demoury. The Tour stages at Le Touquet, in 1971 and 1976 saw the victories of Mauro Simonetti, and Freddy Maertens in a time-trial.

Through its geographical position, Lille played a major role in all the historical turning moments of the Flanders area. For the Tour, the Northern capital also represents a perfect entering point to the race, allowing the town to host the Grand Départ in 1960 and 1994. Twenty years ago, a phenomenon from Great Britain had impressed on the prologue. Flying to victory for his very fi rst appearance at the Tour, track specialist Chris Boardman established a record average speed of 55,152 km/h which still remains in the history books.

Ypres, that will welcome the Tour de France for the very fi rst time, also hosts, like in most of the towns of the country, a well established cycling meeting. The Kattekoers (Cat race) which refers to the tradition of getting rid of cats that were considered as a menace to the commercial prosperity of the city specialised in the cloth industry, was created in 1934. Back in 2006, Greg Van Avermaet conquered one of his very fi rst successes.

In terms of cycling, Arenberg is also known for the famous “tranchée” where Paris-Roubaix is sometimes won and often lost, since it was introduced on the course in 1968, thanks to Jean Stablinski’s idea.

The fi rst visit of the Tour to Épernay was back in 1963 for the start of the 50th edition. Despite the fl at roads, Federico Bahamontes immediately attacked and distanced his main rivals by close to 1’30. Enough to worry Anquetil who had crashed early in the stage, but not quite good enough to stop the Frenchman from conquering a fourth crown.
Only skiing resort of the Haute-Saône Department, La Planche des Belles Filles entered the history of the Tour in style among the fi nishing sites of the race in 2012. After working hard for his leader Bradley Wiggins, he replied to a Cadel Evans’ attack in the last kilometres where the ascent was the hardest. Glory awaited team Sky at the top: stage for Froome, Yellow Jersey for Wiggins.

•Outside of the Alps and the Pyrenees mountains, it would be hard to design a tougher course than this one. The best prepared climbers already found it diffi cult to take on the Planche des Belles Filles back in 2012. This time, the pack of the Tour will discover the Petit Ballon, a climb at an 8 % average, before going up the Platzerwasel and a new climb on the Tour, the Col de Chevrières.

The fi rst stage fi nish in Besançon was to be a historical one. The riders had indeed climbed up the Ballon d’Alsace for the very fi rst time. But the “city of time” has naturally become a key place for time-trials. In 1963 for example, it was in Besançon that Jacques Anquetil, after conquering the overall lead in Chamonix added a fi nal touch to his fourth triumph. In the same spirit, Bradley Wiggins confi rmed his status as the boss of the Tour by shining on the Besançon time-trial where he captured his fi rst stage success on the Tour de France.

What a year of sports it’s been for Oyonnax, a city that will welcome the Tour de France for the very fi rst time and saw its rugby team promoted to the Top 14 league. In terms of cycling, the city has had the time to prepare after hosting the Criterium du Dauphiné. During the last edition, Elia Viviani had made the best of the tough last part of the course to distance Thor Hushovd and Nacer Bouhanni, his expected rivals in case of a bunched sprint. The Italian eventually beat the future Green Jersey of the event, Gianni Meersman.

Four stages of the Tour have already fi nished at the top of the climb heading to the resort above Lourdes. Luc Leblanc was the fi rst to win there in 1994, a few months before conquering the World champion’s title in Sicily. Hautacam was also a turning point in the career of Cadel Evans. In 2008, he indeed captured the race leadership for the very fi rst time with a 1sec advantage over Fränk Schleck. That fi rst experience in yellow was only to last fi ve days for the Australian, troubled by an injury.

•It’s now or never. The climbers will have one last opportunity. On a course designed for them, they can still catch up some time or gain even more minutes on some rivals before living days that will no longer be in their favour. Like on the previous stage, there will be no time to loose: it should all happen in less than 75kms with the climbs up the Tourmalet and then to Hautacam.

An area of plains and hills, the Pays du Val d’Adour is at the crossroads of the Béarn, Perigord and Gascon cultures. Concerning Maubourguet, the name of the common was chosen by its inhabitants to inspire fear to possible invaders. But the “Bad Village” will certainly be far more hospitable to the riders. While the Tour de France will stop there for the fi rst time, Maubourguet has already hosted the start of a stage of the Tour des Pyrenées in 2004, heading to Lourdes and claimed by Théo Eltink.

On the main square of the common, a statue of Cyrano is displayed, although the hero who inspired Edmond Rostand’s theatre play never put a foot in the city.Unlike Cyrano, wines are very present in the area including the famous Monbazillac. In terms of cycling, Bergerac has only welcomed one stage of the Tour that brings back fond memories to Jacky Durand. On that day of July 1994, he had indeed conquered his fi rst stage victory in Cahors with the French champion’s jersey on his shoulders.

•The countdown has been launched for the sprinters and the breakaway candidates who have just a few opportunities left to shine. The fi ght for the stage winner’s trophy by the Dordogne River promises to be even fi ercer. Despite the kilometres already covered, the speed of the pack should be impressive in the fi nal moments: Bergerac will be a city to conquer.

The second city of the Dordogne area is linked to some prestigious riders after hosting two time-trials. Already on the way to Perigueux but on a longer distance of 74.5kms, Jacques Anquetil sealed his 2nd victory on the Tour de France in 1961. In more recent times, Miguel Indurain captured the Yellow Jersey of the 1994 Tour on a course in the opposite direction, beating his closest rival, Tony Rominger by over two minutes.

The people of Perigueux have welcomed two time-trials in their city that already linked them to Bergerac, in 1961 and 1994. They also had the opportunity of seeing the pack go by in 2007. As the breakaway group went through the city, they certainly weren’t expecting great things from a bruised and battered Sandy Casar who had hit a dog just after the start in Cahors. But once in Angoulême, the rider, used the second positions, fi nally conquered his very fi rst stage on the Tour de France, eventually beating Axel Merckx, Laurent Lefèvre and Michael Boogerd to the line.

•There will only be 54 kilometres to be covered against the clock on the 2014 Tour de France. All of which will be gathered on one same effort on the eve of the fi nal arrival. The course will favour the most powerful riders. Some might have the possibility to go for the Yellow Jersey, but this last opportunity could be hazardous.

Despite developing on an ancient roman city, the Essonne Prefecture later built the only French cathedral of the 20th century! It then had to wait for the 21st century to host another monument, the Tour de France, for the fi nish of a stage won by Erik Zabel. At the time, the German sprinter didn’t yet know that he would fail in all his attempts to triumph on the Champs-Elysées stage.

With his four stage wins, the Champs-Elysées seemed to have found in Mark Cavendish its master but Marcel Kittel stopped the series of mister invincible on the famous avenue. Already a winner of the fi rst stage in Bastia, Cav’s contradictor is one of the 14 riders who have won on the fi rst and last day of the Tour. Before the German, Thor Hushovd had been the last to join the club in 2006.

•The fi nal stage is always one of the most coveted. On some occasions, daring attackers managed to surprise the sprinters fi ghting for the prestige of the fi nal stage success. With the specialists we currently have on the cycling scene, such a challenge would be an exploit.
