Dr. Ivan Allen Named President of Central Georgia Technical CollegeCGTC, MGTC will become new Central Georgia Technical College in July 2013;

Allen to lead the merged college

Atlanta - TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson informed the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia today that Dr. Ivan Allen is his choice to become the permanent president of Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) in Macon, effective immediately.

Allen’s appointment means that he’ll be the president of the larger college that will result from the planned merger of CGTC and Middle Georgia Technical College (MGTC) in Warner Robins, which should occur in July 2013.

Jackson also recommended that the colleges, once combined, keep the Central Georgia Technical College name.

Allen has been the president of MGTC since 2005. Last June, Jackson asked him to serve as the interim president of CGTC following the retirement of Dr. Mike Moye.

“Dr. Allen possesses the right skills to carry this big job forward. He’s widely known and well-respected throughout all of the communities that will be served by the merged college, and he’s deeply committed to the success of every one of his students. He has my full trust and utmost confidence that he’ll be a great president of what is going to be a bigger, stronger college,” said Jackson.

Jackson added that the name reflects the important regional mission of the combined college. “I’ve received input from many of the community leaders in the areas served by both colleges, and there’s a general agreement about retaining the Central Georgia Technical College name. It speaks to the ability and reach of the larger college to provide enhanced workforce development and offer more support to the economy of this vital region of the state,” said Jackson.

Shaw Blackmon, a member of the TCSG board from Warner Robins, made the motions for the board to accept Jackson’s recommendations. The board voted unanimously to approve Allen as the president and endorse the college name.

Jeff Scruggs, the vice president for economic development and institutional support services at MGTC, has been serving as acting president during Allen’s absence. He’ll continue to lead MGTC through the merger.

Allen is a native of Macon who began his career at MGTC as an instructor in 1997. He also served as the college’s director of accreditation, director of instruction, and division chair. He was named the TCSG instructor of the year in 2000.

Allen has a Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University. He holds a Masters of Public Administration from Georgia College and State University and Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He is also a research scholar with the Ford Foundation, the Campbell Foundation and the Dana Foundation.

He serves on the board of trustees for the Houston Healthcare System and is a member of the Rotary Club of Warner Robins. Allen is also on the boards of Mount de Sales Academy, Museum of Aviation, 21st Century Partnership, Central Georgia Better Business Bureau, Middle Georgia Workforce Investment Board, Middle Georgia RESA, and Community Health Works. In addition, he’s active with the chambers of commerce and economic development authorities in the middle Georgia region.

He and his wife Danyel reside in Centerville with their three children.

CGTC serves Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe, Putnam and Twiggs counties. It has another campus in Milledgeville and training centers in Gray, Eatonton, Roberta, Forsyth and Jeffersonville.

MGTC serves Dooly, Houston, Peach and Pulaski counties through its Warner Robins campus and training centers in Hawkinsville and Vienna.

About the TCSG: Enrollment at the 25 TCSG colleges grew at a record pace between 2008 and 2011, fueled in part by the large number of unemployed and under-employed Georgians who turned to the colleges to gain more knowledge and learn new skills. Last year, the TCSG enrolled more than 172,000 students and produced 35,000 graduates in certificate, diploma and degree programs.
