Tulare County Career Fair Expands its Focus in 2010
This year’s emphasis is on career-building, education, self-employment
Visalia, CA — The Workforce Investment Board of Tulare County (WIB) announced
today the 2010 Tulare County Career Fair will be held Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the
Visalia Convention Center.
“The Career Fair is the largest single event of its kind in the County, and last year
had more than 1,800 attendees,” said Adam Peck, WIB Executive Director. “This year
we want to help our job-seeking clients become more invested in choosing and
preparing for a career, not just a job.”
As part of that broader theme, a wider variety of organizations will have a
presence at the event. Vocational training schools, traditional education, and
entrepreneurship programs will have booths, and for the first time, home-based
business opportunities will have a presence. The Central California Small Business
Development Center (SBDC) will also be there to discuss starting a new business.
“Despite all the forecasts for a slow recovery, we have a few businesses in need
of skilled people.” Peck said. “We hear from businesses all the time they have job
openings, but can’t find skilled people to fill them. So we want to start guiding our
available workforce into career planning to help fill that long-term need.”
There is no charge for jobseekers to attend the Career Fair, and attendees are
encouraged to dress professionally and bring copies their resume to show to employers.
Back by popular demand, the local chapter of the Society of Human Resource
Managers (SHRM) will have members available to “speed interview” attendees so they
can get practice and direct input on how to interview for a job.
