‘The Threshold of the Desert’ is a communication project raising awareness about women as engine of development and social change in rural areas of the Arab world.The project brought together top international experts working on women’s empowerment that discussed recent trends, challenges and opportunities during an inspiring and lively debate, hosted by the S&D Group in the European Parliament.
The panel of experts included: members of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, UN Women, OECD, Anna Lindh Foundation, E.E.S.C. and Apip-Acam Foundation.The seminar was well moderated by Cheryl Miller, Founder and Executive Director of Zen Digital introduced Najat Aziz, the star of the documentary, Ramon Vila, director of the project and enabled an interactive and smooth debate with the members of the European Parliament, the public and international media.
During the debate, key contributions were made by Corina Cretu MEP, Vice-Chair of the S&D Group responsible for gender mainstreaming and women’s rights issues, Silvia Costa, MEP (S&D, Italy), who has prepared the Parliamentary report on the situation of women in North Africa and Zita Gurmai, MEP, Member of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, and President of PES Women, who summerised the final remarks and closed the event.
