ACTOR - The actor acts, sings and dances to tell the story to an audience. (That’s you!)

MUSIC DIRECTOR - The music director teaches the songs.

CHOREOGRAPHER - The choreographer teaches the dances.

CAST and CREW The DESIGN CREW collaborates to create the visual setting for the show.

Other Helpful Terms CHEAT OUT - face the audience OFFSTAGE - off the stage and out of the audiences view CUE - an action or word or music that signals what happens next

The director says key words to you during rehearsal so you know where to stand on stage.

“LEFT” and “RIGHT” are always from the actor’s point of view facing the audience.





THEATER A THEATER is where the show is performed. (THEATRE is the art of performing on stage.)

The HOUSE is the area where the audience sits and watches the show.

BACKSTAGE and OFFSTAGE are where the actors wait. The audience should only see the actors onstage and not the actors offstage.

Guide to a Fun and Successful Show

Always come to rehearsal on time and be prepared with your script and a pencil.

When you are onstage always stay “in character”.

Perform your lines and songs with energy so that people in the back row of the audience can hear you.

When you are backstage and offstage, be quiet and don’t let the audience see you.

Practice everything you learn during rehearsal - memorize your lines, songs and dances.

Collaborate with everyone - you’re all on the same team.

Remember that every part is a BIG part and important in telling the story.

Relax, be creative, and have fun!

(We are inside the world of video games. The set is decorated in a bright, pixelated style that is reminiscent of 1990s video game worlds including Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc. The background features a few warp pipes, green hills, puffy clouds, rows of floating bricks. To stage left is the “Ringometer”, a tall skinny column that resembles the flagpole at the end of Super Mario Bros. At the top of the pole is the number 5000. There is a flag that can be adjusted up and down the pole. Everything looks pixelated, made up of small block colored squares.)

(The music begins and the HEROES take the stage.)

YOUNG ADVENTURER Now we know what you may be thinking; how did we get all these famous video game characters together, in one room, for this special event?

PRINCESS It all began one morning when the sidekick Little Mushroom went to check-in on her hero, Marco the Plumber…

SCENE 2: Put On A Show Flashback

(Underscoring begins as the stage transforms into a flashback. MARCO THE PLUMBER is slouching on a chair facing the audience, eating potato chips, flipping channels on an imaginary remote. There’s empty bottles of ketchup on the floor. LITTLE MUSHROOM comes to the imaginary door and knocks.)

LITTLE MUSHROOM (very positive, lots of energy) Hey, Marco!

(no answer…she knocks again) Marco, I know you’re in there, I can hear your crunching.

(no answer, she cautiously opens the imaginary door and lets herself in, she sees MARCO slumped in the chair)

There you are! Hey want to go take the cart around the racetrack today...what do you say?

MARCO (dramatically) What’s-a the point?! I’ve been out of play-a forever! Can you pass me that bottle of ketchup?

LITTLE MUSHROOM (reluctantly grabbing the ketchup and bringing it to him)

Here ya go...how many bottles of ketchup have you gone through? You gotta take it easy on that stuff!

MARCO (pouring ketchup on his potato chips) Who-a cares, I have no rings, I have no-a lives...there’s nothing left...but ketchup!




LITTLE MUSHROOM You know, just ‘cause you’re out of play doesn’t mean you have to stay all cooped up in here.

MARCO (breaking down into a crying tantrum) Cooped up? Koop-as?! Oh, how I miss-a the Koopas!

LITTLE MUSHROOM (to herself, inching her way out) Oh Marco, I hate seeing you this way.

(LITTLE MUSHROOM exits the imaginary door and sees LORENZO THE BROTHER and PAWS THE FOX walking across the stage.)

LITTLE MUSHROOM Lorenzo the Brother, Paws the Fox! I just came from Marco’s house - being out of play is really getting to him.

LORENZO Potato chips and ketchup?

LITTLE MUSHROOM How’d you know?

LORENZO It’s a-family thing.

PAWS THE FOX It’s not just Marco, Speedy too! He’s broken three treadmills since being out of play. He’s got way too much energy, and no where to use it!

SQUARE BUILDER EVE (acting like a spoiled celebrity, used to being in the limelight, carrying her infamous pick axe)

I mean, I did have to move a couple of things around, but you’re welcome.

ANGRY BIRDY (speaks in a gruff angry tone all the time) The traffic on [congested street in your town] was terrible! But I’m here! And I’m smiling!

(turns to the audience with a painful grimace)

YOUNG ADVENTURER So tell me, it’s been so long, what’s it like to have your game rank number one on the charts?

SQUARE BUILDER EVE It’s pretty great. This ends in 45 minutes, right? ‘Cause I just started building a second story on my house and I hear it’s gonna rain soon...

ANGRY BIRDY (looking around) Yea, it’s nice being on top…especially on top of a pig as as I crash down from above!

(Starts making the following sound effect with his voice: a slingshot, flying through the air, a big crash, a big tumble, a “ahhhh help me!”...it gets very silly. He stops, everyone looks at him for a beat. And then…)

YOUNG ADVENTURER (working hard to keep a smile) Well, thanks for being here. We’re looking forward to your commentary throughout the night. Let’s move on with our show, shall we?!

(All the HEROES bunch together in a tight embrace as they stare at the Ringometer.)

EVIL ROBOT Calculating...calculating...our final total is...

(SFX of rings collecting, then BLACKOUT! There’s murmuring amongst all the characters.)

ALL Oh no!! What happened?!? What do we do?!

(Dim lights come back on. PAC ANNE enters from the audience, holding a severed extension cord in two pieces.)

PAC ANNEMuahahahaha!

ALL Pac Anne!?!

YOUNG ADVENTURER She cut the feed! We’ve lost our entire broadcast!

KARATE GUY We’re doomed!

PAC ANNE (walking through the aisles toward the stage)

Muahahahaha! You thought you could just get rid of me with your playoff music, never to hear from me again? Well if you think my career is over, then it’s over for ALL of us! If I can’t play on...neither will any of you!




MEGAKID Why?! Why would you do this?

PAC ANNE Becoming a hero again isn't just about earning more gold rings! It takes more than that…

SPIKEY TURTLE Generic Ghost, get her!

(GENERIC GHOST chases PAC ANNE off the stage and through the audience.)

SPEEDY Now we’ll never get the rings we need to play on!

MEGAKID And we’re almost out of time!

MARCO (giving up)

SLIMY ALIEN Wait! There must be some way we can earn more rings...without the broadcast.

(SFX: Ding! The whole cast slowly turns to look directly at the audience.)

PRINCESS POMEGRANATE Live audience of [your town], you all have rings, don’t you?!

YOUNG ADVENTURER If you have a ring, make some noise and hold it up in the air!

(Elicit audience response.) I can’t hear you, make some noise!

EVIL ROBOT (scanning the audience)

That looks like enough rings to reach our goal.

SPEEDY But we have to EARN them - and we have no more acts!

(LITTLE MUSHROOM confidently steps downstage.)




LITTLE MUSHROOM I’ve got something. Elway, your cleats!

JOHN ELWAY With pleasure!

(As ELWAY hands over his cleats to LITTLE MUSHROOM, YOUNG ADVENTURER and PRINCESS share a concerned look, then shrug.)

PRINCESS POMEGRANATE We’ve got nothing else to lose.

(ALL CHARACTERS fade to the background as LITTLE MUSHROOM, with her cleats on, takes center stage. She begins a tap number, slowly at first. ALL CHARACTERS look concerned.)

JOHN ELWAY You can do it Little M.

(The tap number progresses into a frenzy. Suddenly everyone is on board. ELWAY joins in with a clap and cheer. Then more join in. Then more. Suddenly the whole cast is dancing as the number crescendos into a final pose.)

(The audience erupts. The whole cast comes downstage, congratulates Little Mushroom with high fives, pats her on the back, ruffles her hair, then the HOSTS address the audience.)

PRINCESS POMEGRANATE Sidekicks, hurry, collect those rings!

YOUNG ADVENTURER Well, you saw it folks! The moment a hero was made.

PRINCESS POMEGRANATE If you enjoyed that breath-taking number, please donate any rings you have in your possession! The heroes fate lies in your hands. Just pass your rings to the aisles!

(SIDEKICKS file into the house and begin to collect the rings from the audience.)

(The SIDEKICKS bring all the rings back up to the stage and give them to EVIL ROBOT. )

MARCO You know, even if we don’t reach-a the goal, I know there are lots of-a different ways to be a hero now.

EVIL ROBOT Calculating ring total….calculating...calculating...the final ring total is, 4,999 rings! We need 1 more ring to play on!

ALL CAST 1 more ring?! OH NOOOO!

YOUNG ADVENTURER But we have only seconds left!

LORENZO What about-a Giuseppe?

ALL CAST Giuseppe!!!

PRINCESS POMEGRANATE Giuseppe, are you there?!

(GIUSEPPE appears, lying on the floor passed out from exhaustion, with a coin block dangling over his head.)




LITTLE MUSHROOM Giuseppe, listen to me. We need you to just punch that coin block that one..more...time.

(GIUSEPPE raises one arm a few inches over his head. The coin block gets lowered till it brushes his hand. We hear a “DA-DING!”. The FULL CAST explodes with excitement.)

ALL Whoo hoo! We did it!!

(There’s a loud SFX of all the heroes getting “1-Ups”, perking up and becoming more confident.)

MAD SCIENTIST (running in from off stage)

I fixed the feed - we’re broadcasting around the world again!

YOUNG ADVENTURER (back in host mode)

Everyone who just joined us, listen to me. I want you to know all to know we just reached our goal, and can all play on because of this amazing little fungi.

LITTLE MUSHROOM You mean fun-girl?

PRINCESS POMEGRANATE Yes. This fun-girl has showed us that to be a hero you don’t need rings, you don’t need special powers, you need courage. And strength.
