THE OPPORTUNITYThousands of delegates will attend the July Democratic National Convention (DNC)in Boston. This is a splendid opportunity to feature Boston as a pedestrian-friendly and walkable city, and to highlight the transportation, environmental, and health benefits of walking.
THE CHOICE Our focus is on the leaders and delegates attending FleetCenter events. Eachday, delegates will make a transportation and health choice: take a shuttlebus, taxi, the MBTA, or walk to the FleetCenter. To influence their choice,WalkBoston and our partners are encouraging walking as the most reliable, efficient, and healthiest transportation mode available. Former MassachusettsGovernor Michael Dukakis and other high-profile leaders will lead the walks tothe convention.
THE VALUEWalking is safe, simple, enjoyable and a reliable transportation mode to get tothe Fleet Center. Walking addresses the national epidemic of physical inactivity, creates vibrant communities, a cleaner environment, and reduces dependenceon foreign oil.
THE ROUTEOn July 26 and 27 from 5—7 p.m. volunteers will be stationed at hotels andalong the best walking routes to the convention. They will guide delegates andmake their walk convenient, informative, and enjoyable. To do this We will:
• Distribute maps and route information in the delegate packets and at hotels• Station T-shirt clad volunteers along the route with colorful banners to cheer
and celebrate delegates• Inform delegates of walk travel times as well as the health and environmental
benefits walking• Create a memorable walking surface illustrated with artwork drawn on the
pavement by a legendary Boston artist
THE REASON WE ARE INVOLVEDSince 1990 WalkBoston has improved conditions for pedestrians all acrossMassachusetts. WalkBoston promotes walking for transportation, health, recreation and to create vital communities. We are working with the Coalitionfor Environmentally Responsible Conventions (CERC), the DNC Committee,Boston 2004, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and state and local leaders tomake walking a real transportation choice for the convention.

Walk America’s Walking City
No doubt you’ll want to see and do a lot while inBoston, so here’s important advice: the easiest, most pleasant and least stressful way to enjoy thecity is on foot.
WalkBoston, as a member of the Coalition forEnvironmentally Responsible Conventions (CERC),created this guide to encourage DNC delegates andvisitors to travel on foot and by public transportation.Shown on the map are most major hotels and a recommended walking route to the FleetCenter. Alsonoted are some must-see tourist attractions, alongwith just a few of Boston’s unique and charmingneighborhoods including the Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the North End, and the South End.
People around Boston care so much about walking thatin 1990 they formed WalkBoston, the first advocacyorganization dedicated solely to pedestrians. You’llfind it easier to walk in Boston thanks to WalkBoston’sdetermined efforts to improve the design and use ofstreets, sidewalks and pathways.
Boston is pedestrian-friendly¥ It is a compact and relatively flat city with a Europeanstyle of streets that are safe, lively and diverse.
¥ Places of interest are centrally located. History, entertainment, nightlife, architecture, culture, science and art abound — most sites within walking distance of each other.
¥ Against a backdrop of skyscrapers, theresagreatfeeling of openness, thanks to inviting green spaceslike the Boston Common, Commonwealth AvenueMall and the walkways along the Charles River.
¥ A convenient and affordable subway and bus systemwill take you within steps of your destination.
Everythings within walking distance! So when inBoston, do as the Bostonians do — walk! You llfeelbetter for it, too.
