v- A full Council seating was held reoently. It was reported that the campaign was veil under way la all Provinoae except the O.7.S., where It was hoped to get some activity shortly.
tbs first stage of the overall plan had been completed in the main, although general propaganda work and the snrolment of volunteers was still continuing.
It was felt that the time had come to set definite dates for the completion of the next stages in the campaign, and it was accordingly decided that the final date for the formation of the Coamittemon regional and local levels
should be 51st January, 1955. Demands for the. Freedom Charter to oe collected by the 15ffr Jtarch, and the election of delegates to the Congress will take place between the 15th March and the 15th April. The Corvrress itself will be hald not later than June, 1955*
. The Secretariat reported that much valuable propaganda material nas been printed and issued,
the Call in all languages; a bulletin; and recontly the first pamphlet on the tasks of the volunteers - ’Welcome, Freedom Volunteer.' It is now the work of the Volunteers to spread the idea of the Congress, to give out the Call, and to collect money and attend to educational classes.
Although there were many new faces at the Council meeting, due to the recent increased attacks by the government on the Congress movement, an optimistic note prevailed, as past successes were notdd and plans made to overcome future hurdles. How it is on;e again up tal us, rank and file members and Freedom Volunteers, t get down to got down to the work . .' carry out the next stages In the gr ni 3oonwards to the Congress!

VICTIMS mBtirrin* and oncoursging reports have core© in recently on the present situation
>f Qwsntshe and Lingisi, the two A.N.C. leaders from East London, who were deported six month* ago to the remote hinterlands of the North Eastern Transvaal.
These two men were ordered to leave families, Jork and possessions at twaity- four hours notice. They were sent by train to the Native Trust land in the Barberton-
Nelspruit District, where they were promised shelter and work.
Empty promises they ^Jbied out to be, and if it had not been for the assistanceof two men who had been deported previously, (for trifcal trouble), Cwentshe and Lingisi would have starved. The local communities showed initial hostility, and it
waS difficult to establish contact due to language barriers.
Both men settled down in abandoned huts (they were separated by the District Cowaissioner. and live thirty miles apart), and began to eke out a precarious and very hungry existence. But this did not mean that they bocace ifpre^sed or coaled to concern themselves with political affair's. Last ironth, wnen at last a visit was organised, and a oar bearing food, a little aoney, and sorae Congress activitists, went to see them, they wore found to be in good spirits, and rapidly raking friends
among the people.
Let us not forget these two victims of a fascist regime, nor ibate our work against the vile laws yhich forC6 thousands of our fellow countrymen to live Wider such inhuman conditions. We send ware: greetings to these brave men, and assure
ther. that we will contffhfc to give their, every assistance.
\
b s t s S ju u .
We ■’.re very well organised here, in spite of the fact that 1 will not permit .any banned person (except ;.yself) to help in any way on that fateful ".ay, the reason being that we now have a police captain in charge of the Special Branch wnc is a typical >.-izi, ant2 has declared his intent ier. to afreat on the
slightest protext. i.vcn driving a car with African vo*er& might juvt lun. the excuse ht wants, so wc will oanag» without our faithful fnand*.
After rsy banning ordur wr.s !.;*de put lie we iiad to issue thousands of le > le ts explaining that ^though I cannot attend gatherings, I Oi0»ct be st.pved from entering Parliament, er oe expelled from it-, f'trlleiw'nt is not considered a gathering in t e n s oi the Act by the leading leg--! Jtfcorities here. >
True also necessitated haying repeated iceeting? tbrougnout the area to explain this. Of course ay opposition was quick ti_ i.se tr.e b.nning order to
confuse tiie voters and |.ell ther that I could not enter I »--riiament. But ill their tricks have backfired, and I have every confidence that the African voters
will return the candidate that 3wart
doesn’ t want!
An interesting thing about tnis election is thst t..e C.O.D. is well-known to the Africans. At every meeting I aedressed ■I w!'3 given a unxiaous vote of confidence. Le;;t week an all-A irican meeting waS held at Langa. It was well attended f.r.d once again n vote of confidence. The wreckers have usually been very successful ijn u*nga in tne past; even oai*. k liri was unable to hold a r,*eeting
there! •
N»e are f.ow on the last lap, and even the i Liberals forecast a vict'cry for the 1
f, . 1.
I sincerely hop* >'°ur function is a great success and y-‘>u raise lots of money. And , tell ?y friends th«t no matter hew dark j the night, no c- Csn hold back the dawn, i
