Pressure reducing static mattressesSidhil has developed a range of static foam mattresses to ensure we can offer solutions to healthcare professionals for the individual requirements of patients, carers and budget holders.Foam mattresses play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers combined with clinical assessment and patient management. With this in mind our foam mattress range has been designed to be durable, to withstand a challenging healthcare environment whilst offering optimum clinical outcomes. Our mattresses have been extensively used in healthcare settings and their performance has never been questioned. Each mattress has been designed to redistribute the patient’s weight to increase the contact area and reduce peak interface pressures to ensure patient comfort and well being. The covers are vapour permeable, reduce excessive heat build up and moisture and minimise the risk of shear and friction.

Sidhil’s foam range includes mattress replacements, overlays, seat cushions, crash mats and accessories. Sidhil also supply mattresses that are compatible with competitor beds, patient trolleys and birthing beds.Sidhil foam mattresses are manufactured in the UK enabling us to offer bespoke products to customers who have particular requirements. Please contact us if you need further information.

ClimaCareClimaCare is a revolutionary new product which works to aid in the management of the skin’s microclimate.ClimaCare technology is available in the form of an inter liner which is used in conjunction with a standard cover to help maintain optimum skin temperature, reducing moisture or humidity build up, and therefore helping to reduce the risk of patients developing pressure ulcers.

ClimaCare features advanced Outlast® technology which proactively manages heat and moisture to give a better, more comfortable surface. Outlast® is a Space Certified technology which was originally developed for NASA, and was used to control temperature fluctuations of astronauts during space flight. Outlast® technology utilizes phase change materials that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort, and is tested and proven to alleviate spikes in skin temperature.

1. Varying environmental temperatures and conditions can upset the resilience and moisture levels of the skin.

2. ClimaCare with Outlast® absorbs, stores and release excess body heat to maintain temperature balance.

3. Reduced risk of pressure ulcers through regulated temperature.

ClimaCareMicroclimate control for

pressure care and patient comfort

Even a small rise in the temperature of the skin is recognised as a risk factor in the development of pressure ulcers, and is classed as a key factor in the skin’s ability to withstand prolonged stress. With a higher skin temperature, the metabolic rate must increase to keep up with the body’s demand for oxygen and energy.

This can lead to increased tissue damage and ischemia compared to skin at a normal temperature, even with lower levels and shorter durations of pressure on the body.

Take Care of Your MattressAfter Delivery• Allow your product to lie flat 4-6 hours

before use• Remember, for the Sidhil memory foam

surface mattress range the material is heat sensitive, therefore in rooms of less than 18°C may feel firmer. However, it will soon adjust when you lie down on it as it absorbs the heat from your body

• We do not recommend the use of either an electric blanket or heat pad with your products

• Your new mattress may have a slight odour when first unpacked. This is neither unpleasant or harmful and should take only a few days to dissipate

• Wipe down with a disposable soft cloth moistened with a mild detergent and diluted in warm water (40ºC), dry thoroughly before use

Infection Control• Wipe down with a solution of Sodium

Hypochlorite or similar (up to 1,000ppm Chlorine), dry thoroughly before use

• In extreme cases 10,000ppm Chlorine can be used but the following process must be adhered to: 1. Wipe cover down using cold water 2. Clean with Chlorine solution 3. Finally wipe cover again using cold water.

• The top cover may also be decontaminated using Ethylene Oxide or the Draeger method

• Additional infection control and routine cleaning must be carried out in accordance with your local infection control policy

• Do not use Phenol based cleaning agents (e.g. Stericol, Hycoline, Clearsol etc)

Cleaning and Care of Your Mattress

Test Your MattressWhy Test the Mattress? Your mattresses should be checked regularly to ensure they are still clinically sound for the patient. Foam does not respond well to long term compression and moisture. Regular checking will ascertain whether the mattress is in a poor condition; eg. bottomed out or has ceased to function properly. Several reports have told of the connection between damaged mattresses and infection outbreaks.

Helpful Tips• All new mattresses should be

numbered and dated the day they are put into service

• The date should be on the cover and on the foam, near the zip opening

How to test a mattress:1. Type of MattressThere may be many different types of mattress in service. It will be useful for this and future audits to record the mattress type and if it is on loan or trial.

2. Depth of the MattressUsing a ruler, measure the depth of the mattress at the edge. All foam mattresses (not overlays) should be at least 5” or 130mm in depth.

3. Fist Testing the MattressTo test the mattress for bottoming out the top of the mattress should be

level with the top of your legs. The mattress cover should be in place. Give the mattress up to 5 minutes to recover from the weight of the patient, especially if they are of a bariatric weight. This test is only applicable to non-visco mattresses.

The diagram below is intended as a guide only. The tester is comparing the quality of the foam in areas of high loading (at D & F) and those subjected to less pressure (points A,B,C, and E).

4. The Condition of the CoverThe outer cover should be checked for the following:

a. Excessive staining.

b. Wear, puncturing or splitting which could lead to fluids penetrating through into the foam core.

c Bad fit or incorrect cover for the mattress.

If the cover is damaged in any way it will need to be replaced. If the foam core has also been damaged or contaminated, the whole mattress will need to be condemned.

5. Condition of the FoamThe mattress cover should be unzipped and the inner foam core inspected.

a. Is there a smell when the zip is open?

b. Is the foam deformed or collapsing?

c. Is the foam wet, soggy or stained?

How often should the mattresses be checked?Mattresses should be audited on a 6 - 12 month basis and the results recorded on a mattress audit form.

How to Test the Mattress?

Link hands to form a fist - remember to remove any sharp jewellery.

Keeping elbows straight, lean forward using your body weight and test along the six points of the mattress indicated in the illustration below
