Absorption of Excess Pressure
Types of Surge Tank

Key Features
Dual-compartment surge tank is able to empty one tank compartment while filling another tank’s compartment.
Possession of sight glasses or magnetic level indicators as well as high and low level alarm on each compartment.
Automatic pressure-control valve normally open on gas outlets. Compliant with ASME VIII, Div. 1
Bladder Surge Tanks BLADDER:
The bladder is often made from a high tensile rubbers with or without reinforcements, in Neoprene, Nitrile (Buna-N), Food Grade Butyl or Hypalon Rubbers, or expanded to fit the whole vessel. The bladders are comply with a flange at the top as per client’s vessel details. ERGIL Bladder Surge Vessel is designed to control the surge with a butyl rubber inside the vessel. In order to provide required elasticity to push the water into the system following a pump trip, calculation of pre-charge pressure will be vital. If there is no contact between the compressed air and the water, there will be no dissolution. Thus, there will be no need for a permanent regulation system including compressors, etc.
Introduction Surge vessel is a stand pipe or storage reservoir at the downstream end of a closed aqueduct, feeder, dam or a barrage pipe to control negative pressure as well as provide extra water during brief drop in pressure.
ERGIL is international manufacturer of different types of surge tank for potable or waste water pipeline, desalination plants, crude oil pipelines and other applications in horizontal and vertical alignments.

OPERATION The hydraulic analysis (pre-charge either compressed air or nitrogen) will give the result of value adjusted to the pre-charge of pressure. The water will go inside the vessel under static conditions and start to compress once the gate valve is opened. The water will entire the vessel and led further compress the pre-charged gas until a balance between the liquid and the compressed gas is reached. Right after a pump trip, the pressure in the pressure in the line will begin to reduce and the elastic energy inside the vessel will led the discharge of water from the vessel) into the line. This situation prevents risky low pressure along the pipe. In the pipeline, pressure might become too low and the flow will reverse. Then the water will go into the vessel via reduced diameter (drilled non return valve or bypass) if hydraulically required. Before the static state is reached, several oscillations may occur. When the vessel has been stimulated and correct the pre-charge has been introduced, the vessel will operate automatically, depressurizing once called upon and refilling with the return waves until naturally reaching its steady state balance. Maximum operating temperature 60-70°

SURGE VESSEL AIR IN BLADDER TYPE (EXPANDABLE &COMPRESSIBLE TYPE)
ERGIL Air in Bladder Type is charged within bladder inside the tank, and the air losses due to absorption are minimal. When the air does not come into contact with the liquid in the tank, the bladder will typically be pre-charged at installation with a pre-determined pressure to give the correct operating level in the tank when the unit is connected to the main and at the operating pressure. The bladder with highly elastic rubber, such as butyl rubber and may be sized to expand to fit the entire vessel. The anti- extrusion plate and inlet size are so selected. Thus, they do not restrict the flow in and out of the vessel to prevent the bladder from being drawn into the main at low pressures an anti-extrusion plate is fixed at the outlet of the vessel. The tank material is chosen compatible with the liquid since it comes in contact with the tank inner surface while flowing in and out from the main line.

SURGE VESSEL WATER IN BLADDER VERTICAL TYPE (EXPANDABLE &COMPRESSIBLE)
ERGİL’s Surge Vessel Water in Bladder Vertical Type, the air/media charge is contained within the tank, whilst the liquid
from the mainline flows in and out of the bladder as it is in the air in bladder design, the liquid does not come into
contact with the tank as well as the air charge. In this way, the air charge cannot be absorbed by the pumped media and
so air losses according to absorption are minimal. The whole tank is pre-charged at installation with a pre-determined
pressure to give the correct operating level in the tank when the unit is connected to the mainline and at the desired
operating pressure for this design. The Bladders are fitted with a flange at the bottom as depend on Client’s vessel
details. The static line pressure will be higher than the pre-charge pressure of the Tank. The water/media entering the
Bladder will further compress the pre-charged Tank until a perfect balance is created between the Water in Bladder and
the compressed air in Tank. On pump tripping or shutting the surge created in the mainline will push the water into the
Bladder.

SURGE VESSEL WATER IN BLADDER HORIZONTAL TYPE (EXPANDABLE &COMPRESSIBLE) ERGİL’s Surge Vessel Water in bladder type, the air/nitrogen charge is contained within the tank, whilst the liquid from the mainline flows in and out of the bladder. Like the air in bladder design, the liquid does not come into contact with the tank as well as the air charge, so again, the air charge cannot be absorbed by the pumped media and so air losses due to absorption are minimal. For this design the whole tank is pre-charged at installation with a pre-determined pressure to give the correct operating level in the tank when the unit is connected to the mainline and at the desired operating pressure. The bladders are made from a High Tensile Rubbers with or without reinforcements, in Neoprene, Nitrile (Buna-N), Food Grade Butyl or Rubbers, and may be expanded to fit the entire vessel. The Bladders are fitted with a Flange at the Bottom as per Client’s vessel details. A grid Plate or diffuser can be placed at the outlet of the vessel to prevent the bladder from being sucked into the mainline at low pressures. They are provided with Lugs/Hooks at the Top for hanging support. When the mainline valve is opened, the water/media will enter the Bladder under static condition and begins to compress the Gas filled Tank. The static line pressure will be higher than the pre-charge pressure of the Tank. The water/media entering the Bladder will further compress the pre-charged Tank until a perfect balance is created between the Water in Bladder and the compressed air in Tank. On Pump Tripping or shutting the surge created in the mainline will push the water into the Bladder. This pressure will be absorbed by the compressed air in the Tank and effectively reflex pressure will be applied on the surge. After multiple hammerings & oscillations, it will even out the pressure of the mainline and create a static state, without damaging the pipeline. Eventually the entire system will return back to dynamic state for the next surge.
