Objectives• Define Preventive Maintenance (PM)• List some Benefits of Preventive Maintenance• List and explain six functions of PM

programme • Describe the elements of PM programme• Distinguish between preventive and predictive

maintenance• Prepare a PM schedule

Preventive Maintenance

• What is Preventive Maintenance?

• Preventive maintenance is a schedule of planned maintenance actions aimed at the prevention of breakdowns and failures

Page 4: Preventive maintenance final

Goal of PM

• The primary goal of preventive maintenance is to prevent the failure of equipment before it actually occurs.

Page 5: Preventive maintenance final

Benefits of PM avoid production or service disruptions maintain high quality goods avoid missed delivery datesincreased life expectancy of assetsTimely, routine repairs circumvent fewer large-

scale repairs. Improved safety and quality conditions.

Advantages of a PM system • Reduced production downtime, resulting in

fewer machine breakdowns.

• Better conservation of assets and increased life expectancy of assets, thereby eliminating premature replacement of machinery and equipment.

• Timely, routine repairs circumvent fewer large-scale repairs.

Continue• Reduced cost of repairs by reducing secondary

failures. When parts fail in service, they usually damage other parts.

• Better quality products

• Identification of equipment with excessive maintenance costs

• Improved safety and quality conditions.

Elements of PM Programme

• Predictive• Preventive• Corrective

Page 10: Preventive maintenance final

Preventive V.S Predictive

• Predictive- An attempt to determine when best to perform preventive maintenance activities

• Preventive- things done in order to prevent breakdowns.

• Corrective- the process of fixing or repair after the equipment fail

Page 11: Preventive maintenance final

Preventive V.S Predictive

• The difference between Preventive and Predictive Maintenance is that Preventive Maintenance tasks are completed when the machines are shut down and Predictive Maintenance activities are carried out as the machines are running in their normal production modes.

Reactive vs ProactiveReactive Maintenance:• Breakdown maintenance–Reactive approach; dealing with breakdowns

or problems when they occurProactive Maintenance:• Preventive maintenance–Proactive approach; reducing breakdowns

through a program of lubrication, adjustment, cleaning, inspection, and replacement of worn parts
