2017 National Council for the Social Studies Conference Preview
Dave Isay is the founder of StoryCorps and the recipient of numerous broadcasting honors, including six Peabody Awards and a MacArthur Fellowship. He is the author/editor of numerous books that grew out of his public radio documentary work. In 2015 he received the TED Prize, awarded annually to one exceptional individual with a creative, bold vision to spark global change. His latest StoryCorps book, Callings: The Purpose and the Passion of Work, was released in 2016.
Lucy Kohn is a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. She is the first Asian American United States district court judge in the Northern District of California, the first district court judge of Korean descent in the United States, and the second Korean American federal judge. During her tenure on the court, she has presided over a number of high-profile legal suits involving the technology industry, including Apple Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., and multidistrict privacy litigation against Apple and Gmail.
Pierre Thomas is the Senior Justice Correspondent for ABC News. He joined the network in November 2000 and reports for “World News Tonight with David Muir,” “Good Morning America,” “Nightline,” and other ABC News programs. He has been a key member of ABC News teams honored with Emmy Awards and Edward R. Mur-row Awards. In 2012, he was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.

Sam Wineburg is the Margaret Jacks Professor of Education and History at Stanford University, and the founder of the Stanford History Education Group (SHEG), whose curriculum and assessments have been downloaded over four million times, making SHEG among the largest providers of free curriculum for the social studies. His latest research focuses on how young people learn how to judge the credibility of content on the unregulated Internet.
Hasan Jeffries is Associate Professor of History at The Ohio State University, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate seminars on the Civil Rights and Black Power Movement, and surveys on African American and American history. His current book project, Stealing Home: Ebbets Field and Black Working Class Life in Post-Civil Rights New York, explores the struggle of working class African Americans from the civil rights era to the present.

Speakers
Rosa Rios was the 43rd Treasurer of the United States, serving in that position between 2009 and 2016. She is most recently known for leading the effort to place a woman on U.S. currency for the first time in over a century, culminating in the 2016 Treasury Department announcement that women will be placed on the $5, $10, and $20 bills. Ms. Rios is a Visiting Scholar at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. She has unveiled the first project of her EMPOWERMENT 2020 initiative, Teachers Righting History, an educational project that highlights historic American women.

Chad Williams is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of African and Afro-American Studies at Brandeis University. He specializes in African American and modern United States History, African American military history, the World War I era, and African American intellectual history. He is currently completing a study of W.E.B. Du Bois and World War I.
Chad WilliamsSusan Shirk is research professor and chair of the 21st Century China Center in the School of Global Policy & Strategy at the University of California, San Diego. She is one of the most influential experts working on U.S.-China relations and Chinese politics. She served as deputy assistant secretary of state from 1997 to 2000, responsible for U.S. policy toward China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mongolia. Dr. Shirk’s book, China: Fragile Superpower, helped frame the policy debate on China in the U.S. and other countries.

David Christian is by training a historian of Russia and the Soviet Union. In 1989, he began teaching courses on “Big History” at Macquarie University, surveying the past on the largest possible scales, including those of biology and astronomy. In 2004, he published the first text on “Big History.” In 2009, Bill Gates became very interested in Big History; he contacted Dr. Christian and they collaborated on the free online course that is now available for high school students all over the world.
Steven Johnson is an American popular science author and media theorist. He is the author of eight bestselling books, and is also host and executive producer of the PBS series How We Got To Now with Steven Johnson. His latest book, Wonderland, explores how the pursuit of wonder is a powerful driver of world-shaping technological change, and that future is found wherever people are having the most fun.

The 97th NCSS Annual Conference will serve as host for a United States
Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Ceremony. Watch
as dozens of immigrants from numerous countries take the Oath of
Allegiance, the final step in a long process to become the newest
American citizens. This moving ceremony will include a conversation
with Judge Lucy Koh and Karen Korematsu, discussing the significance

A Revised C3 Framework: Taking First Amendment Rights Seriously While Studying ReligionCharles Haynes, Michael Smith, Maha Elgenaidi. Moderated by Kristen LooneyReligious studies is now an eighth core discipline in the print and on-line versions of the C3 Framework. Panelists will discuss how to equip educators with the background and tools they need to protect the First Amendment rights of students and teachers when questions arise—often from parents—about religion in the classroom or broader school environment. Panelists will pay special attention to curricular
and training resources available for teachers and administrators.
A Revised C3 Framework: Teaching with the New Religious Studies SupplementReligious studies is now an eighth core discipline in the print and on-line versions of the C3 Framework. Panelists will discuss if and how the student learning indicators and disciplinary framework included in the new Religious Studies Supplement conform with the academic study of religion. Panelists will pay special attention to recommendations for integrating the frameworks and learning indicators in a variety of so-cial studies classrooms, including history and civics.
