    WHO WE ARE

08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN

I would like to kick of f October by thanking our MCCS/MCAS team for executing the Summer Music Festival. The weather didnt play nicely, but the change of venue to Club Iwakuni allowed the community to enjoy an evening of great enter tainment, kids face painting and delicious food. Id like to thank Station Safety, PMO and Ops and pass along kudos to Bob Rudolph, our Special Events Manager and Chris Jef fries, Club Iwakuni Manager and their teams of professionals. The money we raised during Friendship Day went directly towards making this a free event for our community. Thank you for the hard work between Station and MCCS teams which made that possible.

We also appreciate the communitys understanding regarding the fireworks display date changes. Luckily, September 7 turned out to be a gorgeous Labor Day, and a per fect evening for fireworks. Speaking of celebrations, we have two notable bir thdays approaching.

The US Navy will celebrate its bir thday on October 13 and commemorate 240 years of Honor, Courage and Commitment. I want to wish a happy bir thday to our Iwakuni Navy community who will surely celebrate at the Navy Ball in the Club Iwakuni Ballroom on October 10. This years theme, Ready Then, Ready Now, Ready Always, reflects the purpose of the Navy Ball: to promote Navy heritage, pride and professionalism.

While we suppor t the Navy in celebrating this month, MCCS is also gearing up for the Marine Corps Bir thday Ball next month. Please be sure to get your dress uniforms and ball gowns to MCX early so the tailor and dry cleaner can have them ready in time. Our salon is looking forward to helping you look your best and are booking up quickly for hair and makeup appointments.

October is also a month filled with notable awareness campaigns. Semper Fit, the Substance Abuse Counseling Center and the Family Advocacy Program put on the annual Color Run/ Walk to promote awareness within our community. The par ticipants get pelted with colors during the run/walk which is quite a sight to see! I hope you and your family can run, walk or spectate while wearing the colors for three causes: red for Substance Abuse; pink for Breast Cancer; and purple for Domestic Violence awareness. The Substance Abuse campaign will be fur ther be highlighted later in the month during Red Ribbon Week. Show your suppor t for a drug-free lifestyle with events from October 26-31.

October is a great month for outdoor activities. The weather begins to slowly gravitate toward the cooler end of the spectrum, but it s still warm enough for kayaking, hiking or fishing. And the cooler temps are per fect for spor ting events. Commander's Cup Kickball Challenge is later this month, and Unit Intramural and Youth Spor ts begin Flag Football season, too.

So whether it s kayaking, a ball game or an Autumn hike, be sure to take a moment to enjoy the cooler temps and appreciate the beautiful region we all call home.

by Angie Rhinehart, RN, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Home Visiting Nurse

Deciding to have a baby is a huge decision that couples make in their marriage. Deciding where to give birth is another, often scary, decision facing couples in Iwakuni. Though the options may seem daunting, there are many out there for our families to choose from depending on the birth setting they desire.

One option is to make the trek up north to Yokosuka, a Navy base. The expectant mother stays in the Stork's Nest several weeks before her due date. If the father can't go with her at the same time, he will join her closer to the due date. This offers families an American fa-cility where there is no language barrier, but it does involve travel and displacing your family for a period of time.

Another option is Iwakuni Clinical Center. This is the hospital that is just a few kilometers from the base, across from where the new off-base facilities are being built. This provides you with a hospital birth setting in a new facility that is close to home.

And another option is Dr. Shoji's. This is the facility women have used for many years if they chose to stay in Iwakuni to give birth. This facility gives you the ability to labor without much intervention from the staff. Moms labor in a tatami room and are moved to the delivery room when they are ready to begin pushing.

Both of the local facilities offer families the opportunity to stay at home until labor begins without having to travel while very pregnant. Though there is a language barrier at both facilities, translators are available and you will create a birth plan so the staff is aware of your desires. If youve had

a baby in the states, the Japanese facilities do things a little differently. Its normal to feel apprehensive about giving birth in a Japanese hospital. Remember, just because it's dif-ferent, doesn't mean it's wrong. Embrace your local options if that is what works for your family.

The Visiting Nurses are all Registered Nurses and can be reached by cell-phone 080-6612-9247. Think of the nurses as you might your mother or sister. You may also have ques-tions that you forget to ask your provider when you are at your baby's well check. Call the nurse line. They are happy to answer your questions and provide advice.

The Visiting Nurses can also make prenatal visits to help pre-pare you for your pregnancy and delivery, postpartum visits and newborn checks. They also offer breastfeeding assis-tance, weight checks, reassurance of milestones, as well as infant safety and childproofing your home.

There are so many resources available for soon-to-be and new parents. The station clinic offers quarterly, five-week childbirth classes that cover everything from late pregnancy to infant safety and normal newborns. NMCRS also offers a Budget for Baby class that assists with financial prepared-ness. There is a New Mom Support Group which meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 10-11:30 AM at the Library. (An evening meeting will be added this Fall.)

MCCSs New Parent Support Program offers many different classes including Baby Boot Camp, Tours of Dr. Shoji's, Breast Pump Classes and the Period of the Purple Crying. Don't be intimidated by giving birth in Japan, either on or off base. There are options available and many support services to help you on your journey, both to and through, parenthood.

Throughout your pregnancy, postpar-tum and infancy phase, the base provides many services to assist you in the journey. The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society has a

    Home Visiting Nurse program.

The U.S. Navy was established on October 13, 1775 when the Continental Congress authorized two ships to intercept British ships that were delivering munitions to British soldiers in America.

The Navy will celebrate its birthday on October 13 to commemorate 240 years of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Our birthday is a time of reflection and celebration that honors a long tradition of pride and professionalism that will carry on for eternity.

The theme for this year is Ready Then, Ready Now, Ready Always. Traditions run deep and Americas Navy is continu-ously in the fight whether we are delivering Marines on the beach or providing humanitarian relief to countries affected by natural disasters.

The Navys earliest ships operated under sail power and bat-tles were won by maneuvering upwind and overtaking the enemy. These vessels, such as Ships of the Line and Sloops of War would prove victorious by opening fire while posi-tioned alongside the enemys ship.

All sailors are aware of the battle between the USS Constitution and the HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812.

This is an inspirational, prominent victory of a fledgling, young United States Navy pitted against an es-tablished world power that possessed four times the sea power as the US. It em-compasses the motto of our Navy:

Todays Navy isnt mechanized by wind, but by fuel and nuclear power. Advanced missile systems have replaced can-non and musket fire. Over 200 years after the Navys incep-tion, women went from unmentionables to serving in WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), to serving on board submarines. Currently, the Navy has over 325,000 active duty, 107,355 Navy Reserve personnel, 271 de-ployable ready ships and more than 3,600 aircraft in service.

MCAS Iwakunis Navy team is expanding every day with Sailors arriving to directly support the mission of the Pacific and continue a positive relationship with our host country. The Navy and Marine Corps teams work together toward that mission. Although the Navy and Marine Corps jargon might get a bit confusing, the bottom line is that we are all in this together and communicating the same message.

  • Ghost StoriesBy Eric Drummond, Community Writer

  • They say that it is very healthy to have hobbies. A h o b b y s h o u l d reduce stress, increase concentration, and help us live a full and satisfying life. Some people fish, paint, surf or read to fill their spare time. Me?

    I HUNT GHOSTS

  • For over twenty years, I have looked into claims of hauntings and paranormal activity in many different places around the world. It all stemmed from my background as a professional mental-ist/magician who was always attracted to things mysterious. My specialty was performing mind reading and bizarre magic effects primarily out of Chicago, but I have worked all over the United States and currently, in Japan. Due to my interest in this topic, I was referred to a group that conducted investigations of claims that could be best described as outside the norm. While I initially started out as a hired debunker, eventually I had seen enough to substantially open my mind to other supernatural possibilities.

My first true experience that I could not explain occurred on the second floor at a private residence I was investigating. Myself and my colleague and I were in the at a master bedroom in a home when we very clearly heard footsteps from behind. We turned to the hallway and the footsteps walked right up to us and stopped in front of me. I heard that as clear as day, and got it on tape, and it stuck with me for weeks.

Numerous experiences like the footsteps have contributed to converting me from a skeptic to much more flexable. Some of the occurrences were big and bold and others much more subtle. These days, I enter an investigation without any preconception and approach the area being in-vestigated with a completely open mind. Now, I use both an open minded view of the paranormal coupled with the skills of an illusionist to get to the bottom of things and it has been serving me well for quite some time. My work in this area has been in helping individuals who are having unexplain-able occurrences. People contact me about weird things that they are experiencing and if I can look into it for them or give some advice, I do.

I honestly enjoy helping people in need. But there is another type of ghost hunting that is equally rewarding. The attraction of famously haunted places is always exciting. I never turn down the opportunity to explore a landmark with a spooky history or reputation! Living overseas in Japan, we dont have haunted houses available to give us a good scare, but there are some local haunts within reach that might provide you a case of the goose-bumps or raise the hair on the back of your neck. Please be safe when exploring and respect our host nation. Always follow local laws, and obey posted instructions.

  • Akama Shrine

A must read book from Japan is The Kwaidan by Lafcadio Hearn. Kwaidan is Japanese for ghost sto-ries, and this book contains some of Japans oldest tales. One of the most notable is the story of Hoichi, a blind musician who visited a temple to beg for rest. The priest of the temple allowed him to stay, but in the eve-nings a samurai would come to Hoichi and hire him to play for his lord. The songs would tell of a great battle and fiefdom of the past and Hoichis employer was very pleased by the performances.

When the temple priest found out where Hoichi was going each night, he discovered that a blind man was playing for the spirits of the very participants of the battle in his songs. The next day, the priest told Hoichi and wrote sacred sutras all over Hoichis body to protect him from the spirits. That night when the spirits came to bring the musician back for another performance, they could not see him as he was invisible where the sutras were written. However, the priest missed Hoichis ears which the spirit then tore off to bring back to his master.

This tale took place at what is now known as Akama Shrine in the nearby city of Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi prefecture. Although the story is from long ago and the spirits have seemingly been appeased, visitors to the shrine sometimes see lights, orbs, and hear the music of a biwa. Shimonoseki was also the location of a famous battle between the Genji and the Heike clans Navies in 1185. There are also ancient samurai residences and the Iminomiya Shrine that, according to legend, was established in the 2nd century. Directions can be found on Google and travel time is around 2 hours. The "kwaidan" can also be found and checked out at the library.

    Naval Station Yokosuka

The next time you visit the naval base in Yokosuka, have a drive through the tunnel from Gridley Ln to Nimitz Blvd. It is a one-way tunnel so it is safe enough to drive slowly. Gridley Tunnel, as its referred to by base locals was built by the Japanese and is known to be haunted. Numerous people have reported seeing the figure of a shadowy samurai in full armor while in the tunnel. The apparitions are brief and usually caught in the rearview mirror. Sightings have startled some driv-ers to the point of accidentally crashing their cars. The majority of the ghost samurai reports happen in the late night hours and during stormy weather. Some have seen the samurai as a silhouette while others have made him out to be as solid as a person just suddenly standing in the middle of the road behind their car in full period costume. So during the next rainy season, take a drive through the hill at about 1 AM in the morning. Just keep your hands on the wheel.

While by no means a comprehensive list, this should get you started should you decide to take up a new hobby this fall. I will be out there for certain. If you suspect that things things are going bump in the night, and would like to get my opiniongive me a shout. Or a scream. Happy hunting!

  • October is a spooky month with themes and imagery that play off our fears. It is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Its a topic that is difficult to approach, but this month is set apart and nationally recognized to provide awareness and open dialogue about domestic violence. You may be afraid to talk to someone about what either you, or they, are experiencing. The tips and in-formation in this article can help you to face that fear and get help.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, first and foremost-dont be afraid to seek help! Remember, you are not alone. You have support, and you have options. No one is born predisposed to becoming a victim of domestic violence. Our society doesnt teach us how we should react to victimization, therefore no one is ever fully prepared for it. People are simply not hard-wired to know how their experiences will affect them.

Dont be afraid to reach out. If you arent sure if what you are ex-periencing is abuse, come talk to a Victim Advocate with the Family Advocacy Program (FAP). We provide 24/7 services to victims of domestic violence.

A Victim Advocate can help with:

Accompaniment to court, medical services, legal services, investigative interviews.

Assist in obtaining a military protective order, and any other services on and off base.

Provide support with financial issues resulting from the abuse.

Give assistance to help the victim move forward, and educate about victims rights.

24/7 Crisis-intervention services, including short-term crisis counseling and response with PMO if an incident occurs.

Advocate for you when things become overwhelming.

Assist in obtaining confidential, safe shelter.

Military family members face unique circum-stances. We can help navigate this sometimes complicated and confusing system.

But what if the victim isnt you? If a friend or family member is ex-periencing intimate partner violence, dont be afraid to seek assis-tance! Many times it is difficult to support someone who might be going through a roller coaster of emotions. But there are several things you can do to support your friends and family members:

Talk to your friend/family member about what they may be going through.

Reassure them you wont judge them. Dont tell them to leave and dont criticize them for staying.

Listen to them. Believe them! Encourage them to seek support from

professionals. Be patient. It can take a while for someone who

is experiencing abuse to realize they are being abused or are ready to face it and do something about it.

Agree on a code word they can use that means I need help or call PMO.

Do not make a promise you cant keep. If you cant be there for them, or cant offer shelter, dont do it. They need someone they can depend on. This doesnt make you less of a friend; This makes you a RELIABLE friend.

Discuss a safety plan. Provide them with resources and emergency contact information if needed.

If you are going to be a support system, you may also need some support and guidance for yourself. Call a FAP Victim Advocate, and we can help you think it through.

Contact a FAP Victim Advocate if you would like to make a re-stricted report. A restricted report doesnt involve law enforce-ment, but it does allow the victim to receive confidential sup-portive services. You can also make an unrestricted report if you would like to initiate an investigation.

FAP Victim Advocates at MCAS Iwakuni provide services to any-one with base access, including active duty military personnel and their spouses, civilian contract employees and IHA/MLC employees.

MCAS Iwakuni 24-7 Helpline to speak to a FAP Victim Advocate immediately: 090-9978-1033

If you or someone you know is in need of support and would like more information,

or would like to make a restricted or unrestricted report, please contact:
