Overview to Course 103 Course 103: Introduction and Overview to Propulsion and Dynamic Braking provides participants with an overview of principles of maintenance of rail car propulsion and dynamic braking systems. This course is organized into five modules:

1. General Principles and Terminology 2. Principles of Operation of AC Propulsion 3. Principles of Operation of DC Propulsion 4. Principles of Operation of Dynamic Braking 5. Tools and Materials

Dynamic BrakingDynamic braking can produce electrical energy in two ways:

Regenerative braking: Returns power back to the source if the DC high voltage power source is receptive

Rheostatic braking: Returns power to brake grid resistors if the DC high voltage power source is not receptive.

when the line is not capable of absorbing excess energy.

Other Brake SystemsDepending on railcar type, design and other requirements, rail vehicles are equipped with other types of brakes.Friction braking• Disc brake rotors, calipers, hydraulics/pneumatic and

proportional control valves are used to slow the train.Hydraulic or Pneumatic Disk Braking• Braking systems which use fluid or air as the force to

push blocks on to wheels or pads on to discs.Track brakes• Brakes with pushbutton on the operator's console.
