Teaching Notes The goal of L.3.1.d is for students to learn to recognize, form, and use regular and irregular verbs. Students should recognize the rules for adding -ed to the end of a regular verb and recognize irregular verb formations. The following information contains ideas that teachers can incorporate into their classroom as well as additional resources to peruse and integrate into instruction as appropriate. Activities 1. Give students practice in identifying past tense verbs. Give them examples of books, magazines, or student writing. Have them write down as many verbs as they can find and then identify whether each verb is regular or irregular in the past tense. If students identify present tense verbs, have them form the past tense of the word themselves. 2. Invite students to make their own worksheets to share in a small group. Have each student write a sentence with the past tense verb missing and add the present tense form of the verb after the sentence as a clue about which word should go into the blank. Students can complete the worksheet created by one partner, then trade papers with yet another partner to grade the worksheet and identify any problems. Circle around the room to monitor students’ progress and correct any errors in past tense verb formation. Writing Prompts 1. For students who can use extra help identifying irregular verbs and forming the past tense of regular verbs, provide a list of the present tense words in the student lesson, but present them out of order. Teaching Notes

The goal of L.3.1.d is for students to learn to recognize, form, and use regular and irregular verbs.

Students should recognize the rules for adding -ed to the end of a regular verb and recognize irregular

verb formations. The following information contains ideas that teachers can incorporate into their

classroom as well as additional resources to peruse and integrate into instruction as appropriate.

Activities

1. Give students practice in identifying past tense verbs. Give them examples of books, magazines,

or student writing. Have them write down as many verbs as they can find and then identify

whether each verb is regular or irregular in the past tense. If students identify present tense

verbs, have them form the past tense of the word themselves.

2. Invite students to make their own worksheets to share in a small group. Have each student write

a sentence with the past tense verb missing and add the present tense form of the verb after

the sentence as a clue about which word should go into the blank. Students can complete the

worksheet created by one partner, then trade papers with yet another partner to grade the

worksheet and identify any problems. Circle around the room to monitor students’ progress and

correct any errors in past tense verb formation.

Writing Prompts

1. For students who can use extra help identifying irregular verbs and forming the past tense of

regular verbs, provide a list of the present tense words in the student lesson, but present them

out of order. Have students practice forming the past tense of each word.

2. For students who excel at identifying irregular verbs, ask them to write a paragraph with as

many irregular verbs as possible in the past tense. Then ask them to give their paper to a

partner to underline each of the irregular verbs.
