Food scraps make up 40% of ‘Burnable trash.’ With a few tricks, you can help reduce that waste. We encourage you to take a look at your lifestyle and try out some of the following tips to help reduce kitchen waste.

Town hall is asking shops to refrain from overusing wrapping paper when gift wrap-ping and to encourage customers to use eco-bags.

We ask for the cooperation of businesses as it concerns proper trash sorting, especially with recyclable paper.

<e.g.> Throw out dry food scraps, like onion skins, without putting them into a sink strainer bag.<e.g.> Lay vegetable peels out to dry before tossing.<e.g.> Press or wring liquid out of scraps using a mesh strainer bag.

Take time to read and understand the dates displayed on your food items in order to reduce your waste production.

Reuse Recycle

Repurpose Old Items

Reuse Product Containers

Follow the Trash Disposal Guidelines & Adhere to the Collection Calendar Dates

Buy Easily Recyclable Goods

Use Return Bins at Base Locations

Try selling your items.Donate or exchange your items at a thrift shop.

Paper, glass bottles, and cans are recyclable.

Choose returnable beer and milk bottles.

Reuse shipping boxes and containers.

Try to use refills when available for items like shampoo and sauce bottles, detergent bottles, and stationary.

Find ways to reuse items until you are no longer able to do so.

Your trash could be someone else’s treasure!

A ‘returnable’ item is one than can be used over and over again

We’ve set up semi-permanent bins at local supermarkets that you can use to return recycla-bles (food trays, milk cartons, etc.).

Local women’s groups & elementary schools also offer collection for recyclables. Ask in your area for more info on their collection days.

Try to use milk cartons, recycled toilet paper and other recycled or easily recyclable goods.

Limited to a few items. By recycling, you can contribute toward a more sustainable society.

Your cooperation is crucial in our efforts to promote recycling. We have created a sorting poster and trash collection schedule to help you help us. Proper garbage disposal methods are also outlined in many neighborhood newsletters.

Even town hall

reuses envelopes!

Help Keep Your Neighborhood’s Trash Collection Site Tidy

We patrol often to prevent unlawful dumping.

STOP Burning Your Trash At Home!!

Stop Unlawful Dumping!

The Smell of Burning Garbage is a Disturbance to Your Neighbors

We Promote the 3Rs

It’s Prohibited By Law

Burning Garbage at Home is Illegal

We are in collaboration with the police and prefectural groups to maintain public sanitation.

Patrols are conducted in marked cars.

If you spot someone dumping illegally, please contact town hall at 28-2111 or the Yamagata police division at 22-0110.

Controlled burning is the burning of house-hold or business waste and is prohibited by law (excludes at-home incineration related to farming). However, even in the case of farm-related garbage burning, we ask that you take care not to disturb those around you. If a problem does arise, it will be handled by the local govern-ment. Those who violate this law are subject to a jail sentence of up to five years or a fine of up to 10 million yen (or 300 million if offender is a corporation).

Unlawful dumping is the disposal of trash in forests, fields, and on the roadside. It is prohibited by law. Abandoned waste not only emits a bad odor and attracts bugs, but can also contain poisonous substances which seep into the region’s soil and water supply. Those who violate this law are subject to a jail sentence of up to five years or a fine of up to 10 million yen (or 300 million if offender is a corporation).

It’s quite likely that the smell of your burning garbage will disturb your neighbors nearby, so refrain from doing so.

Put your garbage out for collection on the designated day.

We provide our townspeople and local businesses the necessary information to create a more sustainable society.

Reduce

RecycleReuse

Maintaining the cleanliness of trash collection sites is vital in our effort to protect the environment. We ask that you do your best to help keep your neighborhood’s collection site tidy.
