Prez Reportby Ron Highley, President MOHPA

The groundhog saw his shadow, so I guess we have 6 more weeks of pitching indoors. This winter, when it has been so cold, it feels good to go somewhere warm and pitch some shoes. Whenever we show up to pitch, folks ask me about the farm report. My answer this winter is “Not much is going on at the farm; everything is froze up”!

We had an Officers Meeting the last Saturday in February. We met on the east side of the state at the State Tournament’s host hotel, the Comfort Inn in O’Fallon, near the location of our 2018 State Tournament at Quail Ridge in Wentzville. Quail Ridge last hosted the State Tournament in 2008 and 2009. Start making your plans to attend this year’s State Tournament from August 31 to September 3. You can bet that the Quail Ridge folks will be gracious hosts, and we anticipate a great tournament. The State Tournament will be one of the main discussions at our Officer’s meeting.

The World Tournament this year is in Florence, South Caro-lina, from July 9 to 21. We are looking forward to going to South Carolina, as our family has not yet been to that part of the country. The Florence World Tournament link is on the NHPA home page,

www.horseshoepitching.com. Check it out. There is a lot of good information there, and you can even register online for a small extra fee. The printable entry form is also available.

Outdoor leagues will be starting soon. Handicap leagues, where everyone has a chance to win a game, are where most of us got our starts in sanctioned horseshoes. Most leagues I know charge a very nominal fee, and even with the increase in the national dues, horseshoes is a very inexpensive sport.

Persistence sometimes pays off. Since I have been Prez, I have put our tournament schedule in Rural Missouri, our electric co-op magazine, which goes out to more than 400,000 folks across Mis-souri. I had begun to wonder whether we were getting any benefit from it and was thinking about no longer listing our tournaments in there. What do you know, just this week somebody called to tell me that they have two new possible members because they saw the information and made a phone call. So, we all have to keep recruiting.

As with the last couple of years, I am writing this article during the Super Bowl. What a back and forth game. The Eagles played a heckuva game, and somebody finally beat the Patriots! But this means Tom Brady comes back to play next year, for sure.

Shoe Biz DeadlinesThe magic number is “9”:February 9May 9October 9

Furn’s Turnby Elizabeth Furner

For those of you wondering “where in the world is my Shoe Biz?”, I have finally made the time to finish assembling this issue. We can talk about the weather, we can talk about the holidays, but what we really like to talk about is horseshoes. Have you made your plans? Have you made your plans to pitch in tournaments? Have you made your plans to travel around the state? Have you made your plans to travel east? There are several big tournaments mentioned in this issue, but the most important tournament is the one in which you pitch. Pitch locally first and then branch out—to the State Tournament, to the World Tournament, and on your way, try the State Fair Tournament.

There have been many contributors to this issue. Permit me the space to acknowledge Jeanette Claas, Scott Raimer, Victoria Highley, Mel Bruemmer, Tracy Archer, Dee McIntire, Becky Sidles, Jerry Smith, Florence Center Team, Donna Bastel, Jim Bainter, Stan Griggs, Savanna Johnson, and Rich Altis.

I would like to announce the recipients of the 2017 Junior Scholar-ship Awards. Winners must be a junior pitcher, at least 12 years of age, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and have pitched in an NHPA-sanctioned league during the year. The awards are weighted by GPA rank and the amount of league pitching they do. To receive their funds after leaving the junior ranks, they must be involved with some kind of advanced training or education. The process is outlined in the Sanctioned League Program book, and their application must be filed with the National Sanctioned League Director by December 31 of the pitching year.

The recipients of the 2017 Trust Awards are Jessica Wilson, Liberty Horseshoe Club (Missouri), $200; Michael Hamlin, Sun-flower Horseshoe Club (Kansas), $200; Leon Wolken, Capitol

2017 Junior Scholarship RecipientsBy Jerry Smith, Sanctioned League Director

City Horseshoe Club (Missouri), $175; Taylor Coile, 4 Stakes Horseshoe League (Georgia), $150; Madison Gwinn, Indepen-dence Horseshoe Club (Missouri), $125; Mary Rongish, Sunflower Horseshoe Club (Kansas), $125; Cali Terrell, Liberty Horseshoe Club (Missouri), $125; and Sophie Craven, Liberty Horseshoe Club (Missouri), $100.

These youthful pitchers will receive patches, certificates, and recognition as NHPA Honor/Scholar Society Members. League directors and junior pitchers should plan on meeting the require-ments for next year’s awards. Each of these award recipients easily met the classroom requirements, and several pitched in multiple leagues. Congratulations go to all of these great young pitchers. They serve as wonderful ambassadors of our sport.

From My Court to Yoursby Jim Bainter, MOHPA Secretary/Treasurer

Hi, everyone. I’d like to say that spring is right around the corner, but it’s probably a few miles

down the road. This roller coaster weather has even slowed down the indoor tournaments at The Pits, and the roads haven’t been the safest either. Nuff said about what we can’t control. Now, on to what we can control.

I touched on this subject in the last issue of Shoe Biz, but within Missouri we must get all the personal records to agree. My records, Stan’s records (since he sends your records to Natstats), and Nat-stats’ records all need to match. Admittedly, there are three differ-ent data bases using different programs, but the old story of “garbage in, garbage out” for computers is alive and well. What’s happened is two-fold. The Natstats guy, Wayne, has taken a more proactive approach to identify differences in the records submitted to him, and then Stan and I hear about it. Second, our/your reports to Stan don’t agree. I’m talking about middle initials with and without a period, using a shortened first name or the middle name as the first name, or Jr or Sr with or without a period. At this point, you are probably saying “what difference does it make?” For most of you it means nothing: for our record keeping, it’s necessary. Without you and your correct input, whether it’s a renewal list or a league or tournament roster, an accurate list is difficult to maintain.

To eliminate mundane errors, I have made several decisions regarding names for our official records and have coordinated these changes with Stan and with Natstats. Except for obvious exceptions, there will be no more middle names or initials, nor any periods behind Jr and Sr. If I am aware of a preferred name (e.g., using the middle name or a shortened first name), that change has been made. If there is ever confusion about a name, the NHPA number is the obvious tie breaker. If someone prefers to use another name, I will need to make that change before it becomes official, so you will need to notify me.

League and Tournament Directors, check your names before you submit reports. Frequently, the sign-up sheets do not reflect the pitcher’s official name. If you note changes from the official record, please let me know so the appropriate corrections can be made. I send out frequent profile updates to HSMaster to ensure that everyone has the most current information. Please use them religiously. When you update HSM for tournaments and import

ringer percentages, just ask for the percentages. Don’t ask to update the names. You already have the best listings. The biggest problem is created when the wrong names are submitted on the final league report to the NHPA Leagues Director. Beware.

Recently, I have received renewal lists from clubs and leagues. Many times, the phone number and/or address do not reflect my current information. If you maintain a separate listing, please make sure they are current before forwarding the information to me. There’s a reason that we ask all pitchers to fill out an application for the new year—it ensures current info. I will expect the same if the names are submitted in a group. Please do your due diligence. When you sign up a new pitcher, ask which name they prefer.

Once again, I would like to encourage pitchers who have access to the internet to forgo their printed copy of Shoe Biz. Currently, if you have an e-mail address in my records, you receive both versions already. The e-mail version allows you to receive the issue a week or two in advance of the mailed version. If you need a hard copy, you can always print the pages you want, like the tournament schedule, and still have the computer issue available for reference. All you have to do to opt out of the print version is to notify me. This will save the MOHPA money on printing and postage. Before you make your decision, think about how often you have ever really referred to an old issue of Shoe Biz. FYI, some states only do an e-mail version. We’re not there yet, but it may be considered in the future.

Our current membership for 2018 stands at 480 adults and 47 juniors. Adult membership for 2017 was 610, which was down from 670 in 2016. This is a trend that is becoming all too familiar. Let’s try to change that for 2018. It’s not too early to start soliciting both old and new members for your Spring and Summer leagues. Stay warm. Thank you for listening, and help make this the most accurate year yet. That’s it from the Pits.

Last ShoeGary Wayne Gooch

May 13, 1936 – December 22, 2017

By Jeanette Claas

Gary Gooch of Mont-gomery City passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017, at a Hospice Care Center in Creve Coeur, Missouri, at 81 years of age, of complications of a returning cancer. He was buried in Wellsville Ceme-tery alongside his wife, son, and grandson. Full military honors were provided by Wellsville VFW Post 3056 and the Missouri Military Honors Program.

Gary was born and raised in the small rural town of Wellsville. He attended the same small school as did his future wife, Dot, but they didn’t really connect until several years later. After school, Gary joined the U.S. Army in May 1953 during the Korean Con-flict and served until May 1956. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Gary and Dot connected soon after he returned from the service; they began dating and were married on March 30, 1957. They shared 58 years together. The newlyweds made their home in St. Charles. The couple had three children: Randy, Carolyn, and Kari. Randy was killed in an automobile accident at 19 years of age.

Gary worked for several years as a heavy equipment operator for Union Local 513 in St. Louis. Before that, he worked on a barge in New Orleans. In his earlier years, he was part owner of a machine shop, NPD, in St. Charles.

Gary pitched horseshoes for many years during his adult life. He was an excellent pitcher in the 1980s and 1990s in the St. Charles County area. He and Dot began pitching together at the Golden Triangle Ballpark until it was sold in the late 1990s. They joined the Jack & Jill League in New Melle in 1991 and pitched there through 2003. They were members of NHPA and MOHPA for 14 years.

After their daughters were grown, they decided to move back to the Mineola area. In 2005, they purchased a home on 14 acres of land—“God’s Country” they called it. Their ground was surrounded with beautiful flowers, birds, and birdhouses. Gary enjoyed garden-ing and harvested more than 2000 pounds of tomatoes in a season; they made the best Bloody Mary mix you could drink.

While sharing their retirement years together in this beautiful country, their lives were shattered when Gary was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2009. He underwent surgery and radiation treat-ments. Not long after, Dot was diagnosed with colon cancer. They joined the QRHC for a while until their medical issues wouldn’t

allow. Dot passed away in 2015, and then Gary’s cancer returned. Their last few years were spent doctoring and taking care of each other. Although it wasn’t a perfect ending for this perfect couple we all loved, they showed us what a perfect world it would be if we were all like them. They are gone now, but never forgotten.

Carl J. HarrisJuly 9, 1940 – October 27, 2017

By Debbie Harris

Carl was the eighth of nine children born to Carl and Lilly Harris, on July 9, 1940, in Altamont, Missouri. When he was just 1 year old, his family moved to an 80-acre farm in Gallatin, Missouri, where the fam-ily still gathers for family celebrations. Carl passed away October 27, 2017, after brain surgery.

Carl was a proud mem-ber of the class of 1958 of Gallatin High School. After school, Carl moved to Kansas City to find work. He started working for UPS in 1968 and retired in 1998 after 30 years as an over-the-road driver.

He met Debbie Constance at Hallmark, where he delivered her returns. They were married in 1994 and had many fun times together. They were able to take several motorcycle trips across the country together. The couple spent the past 20 years in South Texas as “Winter Texans.” Carl loved family gatherings, working with his hands, collecting good “junk,” and fishing for catfish with his father-in-law. Carl liked to sing. For those of you who had the privilege of attending the last State Tournament, you were enter-tained by that wonderful voice as it sounded from beneath that trademark white handlebar mustache.

Carl started pitching horseshoes in 1998. He won his class at State one time and pitched in five World tournaments. Carl never cared if he won or lost, he just enjoyed the many friends he met over the years.

Carl is survived by his wife, Deb Constance Harris, in Warsaw and La Feria, Texas. He is survived by 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and by his furry child, Chico.

He is also survived by three brothers and two sisters and by his father-in-law, Dean Constance, of the home in Warsaw. Many other family members and lifelong friends will also miss him.

A Celebration of Life for Carl will be held Father’s Day weekend, June 16 and 17, at the family farm in Gallatin, Mo.

Leonard StulceJanuary 15, 1942 – December 30, 2017

By Jeanette Claas

Leonard Stulce of Florissant, Missouri, passed away at his home on December 30, 2017, of complications of Alzheim-er’s disease at age 75.

Leonard was born and raised in the Bridgeton in St. Louis County. He attended the Pattonville School Dis-trict from K-12 and gradu-ated with the class of 1960. While attending high school, Leonard was very popular, a leader in his class, and an ac-tive member of all sports, es-pecially basketball and track and field. After graduation, Leonard attended Nichols State University on a 4-year basketball scholarship and graduated with a degree in education.

Leonard then returned to his alma mater and began teaching physical education and coaching in middle school and high school. He retired after 30 years. While still working, Leonard owned a fencing company for 15 years and would employ students during the summer months. After he retired at age 54, he began driving a school bus to and from school activities.

Leonard introduced his students to the sport of horseshoes while teaching physical education classes at Pattonville High School. Leonard began pitching horseshoes early in life, but later on he lived next door to an excellent horseshoe pitcher and he began to take it more seriously. Leonard joined the NHPA and MOHPA in 1973. He participated in leagues and some tournaments in O’Fallon and New Melle and at the QRHC, of which he was a member for 13 years. During the 1990s, I bumped into Leonard at the courts in New Melle while we were both pitching in a tournament. It was fun to see him after all those years from dear old PHS.

Leonard married Claudia in 1963. They made their home in Florissant and had four children: Jane, Michael, Steve, and Mark. Steve is now a member of the Wednesday Night Men’s League at the QRHC. Later in life, they enjoyed 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends who knew him so well. He was a member of Chatham Bible Church. Leonard was laid to rest at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, next to the school he attended. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.

Four of the five 2017-2018 winter tournaments are complete. Participation has been good, as we welcomed 24 (Fall Open in November), 29 (Christmas is Coming in December), 25 (January Thaw Open), and 24 pitchers (Groundhog Day Open in Febru-ary). The first weekend in March will be the final tournament for this winter season, and the pitchers will then head off to play in outdoor tournaments.

We have experienced some firsts this season: Pete Ploss won his first Tournament Champion patch in January; Raymond Blevins was a Tournament Champion for the first time in a coon’s age; Austin Etter pitched in his first ever tournament in February (welcome Austin to the NHPA!); and Chyanne (my 15 year old) kept score for the first time for the Groundhog Day Open.

John Fite, tournament director, began a new tradition by switch-ing from trophies to plaques for the top three pitchers of each class. He makes a monthly trek to Harrisonville to meet Victoria (thanks, Victoria) from Highley Appreciated Awards to pick up the plaques and a medallion. John has presented these Tournament Director’s Award medals to those who have “kept trying in the face of adversity” and for those pitching in their first tournaments.

Thanks to Ruth Hudson for keeping the doors open to the Strawberry Shed, keeping the heat on, and flipping burgers for the pitchers to keep up their strength. Also, thanks to everyone who has entered our tournaments, and especially to those who have kept score: Betty Fite, Cliff Blevins, Terry McDonald, Jerry Dugan, Ralph New, Chyanne Archer, John Fite, Glade Greenup, and to any others who I may have overlooked. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at State or at the Strawberry Shed for the 2018-2019 winter season tournaments.

Capital City Horseshoe Clubby Mel Bruemmer

The Capital City Horseshoe Club is looking forward to spring and getting back outdoors. We will be hosting 10 tournaments and three leagues in 2018.

The CCHC is thrilled that our Junior State Champion Leon Wolken won a 2017 NHPA Junior Scholarship. His hard work in the classroom and at the horseshoe pits paid off with this nice award.

Wrapping up 2017, our fall league ended in October with Leon Wolken taking 1st, Steve Johnson 2nd, and Greg Henke 3rd. An End of Fall League tournament was held, with Richard Dudenho-effer defeating Dan Atwood for the championship. We held our Club Championship tournament at our club picnic on October 29, with Dan Atwood claiming the title and trophy by defeating Jerry Weller in a tight final-round contest.

We had the privilege of hosting the Missouri State Tournament in 2016 and 2017. Because of the great support of the MOHPA membership, we were able to present a $5000 check to Special Olympics, which became $10,000 due to a matching grant. We

will also be supporting the 2018 Hall of Fame tournament and the 2018 Missouri State Tournament in Wentzville with sponsorships. The club has also decided to purchase a large brick at the Hall of Fame in support of the NHPA. Thanks again to all who supported us in any way.

Come see us on our courts in Washington Park during the upcoming outdoor season, starting March 31 with our initial tournament of 2018.

Liberty Horseshoe Clubby Gregg Craven

Congratulations go to the Liberty Horse-shoe Club winners for our Fall Leagues the first week of September. Dan Hiatt and Harry Owens won the Monday Morning league with a 23-13 record. Tom Dersham was most improved, Larry Gearheart had the high game with 112 points, and Harry Owens was high over average with 37 points! Tuesday night team winners were Laura Johnson, Theresa Patton, Scott Engelmann, and Hannah Johnson with a 42-30 record. Terry Kampe was most improved, Roy Flatt had the high game with handicap with 142 points, and Savanna Johnson was high over average with 27 points.

Eight NHPA junior scholarships were awarded to league players for 2017; six are Missouri pitchers. We are so proud of all of them. Jessica Wilson, Madisen Gwinn, Cali Terrell, and Sophie Craven played in our leagues, and Leon Wolken played at Jefferson City. A complete list appears on page 2 of this issue of Shoe Biz.

As most of you may know, the NHPA recognizes the top 10 in several categories. Our Junior pitchers got most of our awards, including Cameron Phipps (5), Cooper Phipps (6), Jessica Wilson (5), Warren Highley (6), Eli De La Cruz (2), and Memo Ramirez. Adults who won awards included Theresa Patton, Gregg and Audra Craven. You can view complete list at http://www.horseshoepitch-ing.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1091.0.

Peculiar Lions Park Horseshoe Clubby Victoria Highley

Over the winter, we had several “Peculiar Pitch-ers” make the rounds to the indoor courts. From Liberty to Quail Ridge and the Strawberry Shed in between……a few in Kansas, too! You’ll all recognize the names of these travelers: Roy Flatt; Michael Gillespie; Ron, Victoria and Warren Highley; Jim Sr., Jim Jr., and Ed Kinney; Lawrence Loney; Lee Miller; Ralph New; Memo Ramirez; and Clint Sloan.

With spring and outdoor pitching just around the corner, make sure to come compete with us in our three tournaments: the Pe-culiar Spring Open on May 12, the Peculiar Members Memorial Open on June 9, and the ‘Tween the States Open at Peculiar on August 18. Shelbina Library Park Horseshoe Clubby Scott Raimer

The 2017 summer league campaign was a monumental season for our club. It marked the 25th consecutive year that we have been sanctioned and recognized by the NHPA. Our league director, Rus-sell Ebbing, accepted the NHPA plaque at the MOHPA banquet on Labor Day weekend in Jefferson City. He has been the league director from day one, and the league members are proud that he has kept it going all these years. It was a very rewarding evening for him personally, as he was one of the two newest members to be inducted into the MOHPA Hall of Fame at that banquet.

For the 2017 outdoor season, we welcomed back two members who weren’t able to play in league with us in 2016, David Day Sr. and Noah Heathman. The league was glad to see those two familiar faces back competing on the courts. Once again, the 11 members followed the same round robin formula we have used the last few seasons, where each member had the opportunity to play against each member in the count all handicapped format. This season’s champion was Bryan Billingsley, who won his first league title and the sportsmanship award. Way to go, Bryan! We give him a ‘Dilly, Dilly’ for this feat. He is a true friend and wears the Champions Crown.

Once again, we are look-ing forward to the 2018 season pitching horseshoes in Shelbina and the start of what everyone hopes to be the next 25 years for this league. Let’s just keep pitching and recruiting.

Quail Ridge Horseshoe Clubby Jeanette Claas

We had a White Christmas here at the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club! Thanks to Mark Neu-bauer and Chuck Gleason, the building was lit up with Christmas lights. They made us all feel that the spirit of Christmas was among us. As I am writing this article, “Baby, it is freezing outside, not just cold, but freezing!” Looks like those lights will stay there until warmer weather comes around.

In late August, we held a Tournament Directors’ Meeting and added some new TD’s to our roster: Andy and Melanie Zerr, Bobby Schwent, Bob Hembrock, Paul Spell, Mark Snead, Keith Patton, Mike Smith, and Kevin Nenninger. Thanks to all who volunteered their services.

The Fall and Winter season kept our club members busy getting tournaments and events lined up. Daryl Miller, League Director on Monday Nights, reports that he has 18 teams with 19 new players this year. Rich Altis, League Director of the Wednesday Nite Mens Leagues, has 12 teams with 4 to 6 men on each team and a total of 8 new players for the season. We would like to welcome all our new pitchers and hope that they continue to pitch with QRHC for many years. The October Fest Tournament was under the direction of Terri Loeffler and Mike Guillaume. Rich Altis was the Grand Champion with 7 wins and 1 loss and a tournament average of 69.5%. Leon Wolken, a junior, won Class B with a tournament average of 48.4%.

Our Fall Team Handicap Tournament under the direction of Jim and Carol Howard was very successful, with 16 teams entering the tournament and prize money of $420. At the end of the day, the team of John Sapper, Dan Peterson, Don Shores, Bob Thompson, Norvell Johnson, Ralph Nunn, and Ed Pashia were the tourna-ment champions. We were happy to see that Terrie Rose of the HeeHaw Club, who was in a terrible auto accident in August, is doing well. The Future Youth Champions immediately followed the adult tournament; Tucker Jones (CAD) took 1st place with a 5-0 record and a 17% average, and the Class B winner was Dominic Skirvin (CAD) (5-0; 8%).

For the second year, QRHC members Tom and Cathy Boyer and Lonnie and Donna Nasalroad invited their motorcycle group to participate in another day of fun pitching horseshoes at QRHC in early November. Approximately 30 cyclists attended.

The Turkey Trot Tournament soon followed under the direc-tion of Ralph Hummel, Paul Spell, and Mike Smith. It was a great success, with a full roster of 64 pitchers. Rich Altis was the Grand Champion (7-0; 72.18%). Watch out for Larry Brown, as he has moved to 30’ and is working his way up, taking 1st place in Class B with a 48.9% average. The November Future Youth Champions followed immediately with Calden Shirley (CAD) taking 1st place. Dominic Skirvin (CAD) won his division in Class B. Mel Bruem-mer won both the turkey raffle and the 50/50 drawing.

Soon Christmas arrived, and we were paid a visit from the Ten-nessee Twins pitching in the Jingle Bell Rock Tournament under the direction of Gaylord and Carol Compton (assisted by Mark Snead). Marlene Ray was the grand champion (7-0; 79.1%). Dave Haskins won the Christmas Ham. Teresa Stockler was the win-

Junior Spotlightby Savanna Johnson

Steve Bruemmer’s daughters, Rebecca and Rachael, are two girls you won’t forget from the courts. These two bring so much energy and positivity to the game we already love.

The girls never thought much about pitching until 2016, when they went to the World Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama, with their dad. They had so much fun there, they wanted to start pitching. Later that year, both girls pitched in Cadets B Class at the Missouri State Tournament. The next year, they were able to pitch at the World Tournament in Utah. Rebecca placed 4th in Cadet’s C Class, with an average of 15%, and Rachel placed 3rd in Cadet’s D with an average of 10.56%! Just a few months after Worlds in 2017, they came back to the Missouri State Tournament. Rachel, who scored under 6% in 2016, took 1st place in the 2017 Cadets A Class, with an undefeated record, at 14.5%! Rebecca, who also scored under 6% in 2016, placed 3rd in the Cadets Championship Class and finished with a 25.5% average!

You can tell that these girls worked hard during that year to raise their ringer percentages significantly! We can’t wait to see what else they can do in the years to come! Great job, girls!

Special Olympics Donationby Mel Bruemmer

The Capital City Horseshoe Club held its annual picnic on Oc-tober 29. The highlight of the day was the presentation of the $5000 check to Special Olympics Missouri for horseshoe pits at their ‘Training for Life’ Campus. Gary Wilbers, who led the fund-raiser, said that the donation would be matched, so the Campus will receive $10,000.

Pictured presenting the check for the CCHC are 2017 Men’s State Champion Steve Johnson and 2017 Junior State Champion Leon Wolken. Accepting the check for Special Olympics Missouri are Gary Wilbers and Special Olympics athlete Keith Lueckenhoff. The $5000 was raised by the Capital City Horseshoe Club and MOHPA during the 2017 Missouri State Championships held at Washington Park in Jefferson City, along with its partners the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The donation is specifically earmarked for the building of horseshoe pits on the ‘Training for Life’ Campus. Thanks to all the Missouri horseshoe pitchers who participated in any way. You made a real difference!

Steve Johnson and Leon Wolken, representing the Capital City Horseshoe Club, present a check for $5000 to Keith Lueckenhoff and Gary Wilbers of Special Olympics Missouri.

Team Worldby Mel Bruemmer

Team World is the most fun you can have playing horseshoes. Three days of playing horseshoes surrounded by the best people on earth—horseshoe pitchers. Have a great time pitching shoes and enjoying the great hospitality of Beloit, Wisconsin!

Team World 2018 will be held from May 18 to 20, and we would like you to experience this great event. We have had excellent success and hope to repeat the experience for all who participate in 2018.

Players will be placed on teams of 4 to 5 players. Missouri was represented by 5 teams in 2017, and our goal is 7 teams for 2018. (This would be a record for teams from one state.) If you would like to be included on a team, just let someone on our committee know. The Team World Committee for Missouri is Mel Bruemmer, Gregg Craven, Jim Howard, and Virgle McCown. Contact Mel at 573-821-6350 or send an e-mail to [email protected]. Information is also available at www.teamworldhorseshoe.com. Come play and party with us in Beloit!

ner of the big clock raffle, but took the $100 prize money instead. Chuck Gleason donated the clock back to the club, where it will soon be hanging. We were happy to see Jan Kreienkamp back into her game, winning Class C with a 49% avg. The December Youth Champions included 17 juniors and cadets. Tucker Jones won Class A (4-1; 31%), Sadie Wolken (Cadets) won Class B (5-0; 9%), and Class C was a tie between Calden Gary (Cadets) (4-1; 12.9%) and Reese Compton (Junior Girls) (4-1; 3.9%).

Our first tournament of 2018 was under the direction of Gary Rohrig, Ernie Brakensiek, and Tony Rohe: a full tournament with no last-minute cancellations and no problems. Our grand cham-pion was Marlene Ray (7-0; 77.6%). Sisters Maxine and Melanie Zerr tied for 2nd, with Maxine at 66.39% and Melanie at 65.34%. An exciting tournament!

We are looking forward to a great 2018. We hope this flu epi-demic will soon go away so we can concentrate on horseshoes. You were just lucky if you didn’t catch this nasty bug going around. In addition to our regular monthly tournaments, we are making plans for our special events this year, including the Hall of Fame Tournament, the MOHPA Team Benefit Tournament, and the Missouri State Tournament. If you are traveling through Missouri and need a place to warm up, stop by and pitch some shoes. We’ll leave the heat on for you!

We wish everyone a Happy 2018 New Year and hope you accom-plish many ringers in the coming year. Our wish is for good health, especially to Ron Hassler, Francis Ennis, and Mike Fadler. Many of the QRHC members were struck with influenza, pneumonia, and bronchitis during the cold blizzard we had. Jan Kreienkamp is recovering nicely from her surgery. A fast recovery to John Leffeler, who broke his leg, and our sympathies go to Steve Stulce for the recent death of his father, Leonard, who was once a member of the club; Derek, Lauren, and Tucker Jones upon the recent death of Lauren’s mother; and to Mike Thomson with the recent death his granddaughter.

15th Annual MOHPA Club/Team Tournamentby Donna Bastel

We reached a new milestone: this is the 15th year for this event. At the MOHPA Officers winter meeting, it was agreed that this tour-nament will be considered an Official State Championship event. Therefore, the winning teams and members from each year will be printed in our State Championship program booklet. We hope that this will entice you to sign up your team for this event.

In 2004, the first edition of this tournament was held in Straf-ford. It filled 32 courts, ran 2 days, and had 128 entries in 25 teams. In comparison, 2017, the event was held in Wentzville and had 12 teams with a total of 62 entries.

The 2018 Club/Team Tournament will once again be held on June 2 in Wentzville at the Quail Ridge courts. We can accom-modate a maximum of 96 entries, all indoors, by holding 3 sessions. The cutoff date for entries is May 18. Start working on your teams now and help us get the maximum entries. If you have any sugges-tions for changes you would like to see made to this event, please share them with me. You can call me at 573-378-3447 or e-mail [email protected]

The countdown to Worlds has begun! We are busy preparing for the big event, and we can’t wait until you experience all that Florence has to offer. We are a contempo-rary, Southern Belle of a city that features a variety of fine restaurants, unique shopping, and a rich history. When you’re not at the beautifully renovated Florence Center, we hope you will explore some of our favorite attractions.

Visit the Florence County Museum, where you can learn about the early days of Florence. You’ll find history and culture in a variety of exhibits that showcase works from various artists, including Florence native William H. Johnson. While you are downtown, enjoy a fantastic meal from one of our locally owned restaurants on Restau-rant Row. Speaking of delicious food, hop on the SC Pecan Trail and experience a modern take on traditional dishes featuring pecans. Stop in participating businesses and enjoy delightful dishes like pecan encrusted grouper or sip on a pecan pie martini.

July is the perfect time to paddle South Carolina’s Revolutionary Rivers. The trail

Countdown to the 2018 World Tournament!highlights the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution, taking you through the scenic swampland where the famous “Swamp Fox” General Francis Marion once led his troops. Put in at Lynches River County Park, but not before you take a walk on the treetop canopy bridge overlooking the park.

Just steps outside the Florence Center is the Florence Veteran Park, where you can stretch your legs as you browse the sculpted monuments along the walking trail. Stop by our information table during the tourna-ment for even more things to see and do while you are here.

We are looking forward to hosting the 2018 NHPA World Tournament in our beautiful city in just a few short months. On behalf of the Florence Convention and Visitors Bureau, we want to welcome you to Florence.

Please look at the tournament schedule and pick out a tourna-ment or two so that you can get in your qualifying tournaments before the cutoff date, which is usually near the first week in August. Remember, it takes three events, which can be Leagues, Tournaments, or a combination of the two.

Pam Miller, the owner of the O’Fallon Curves at 812 Midpoint Dr. has graciously donated a $200 gift certificate to be used as an attendance prize at the State Tournament. Some lucky lady will have the opportunity to experience multiple full-body workouts to equal $200 at the O’Fallon location.

Comfort Inn will be the Host Hotel for the

2018 Membership ApplicationMissouri Horseshoe Pitchers AssociationNational Horseshoe Pitchers Association

The NHPA card is a combined membership in your state and national horseshoe pitching associations. This card entitles you to participate in NHPA-sanctioned play throughout the United States and much of Canada, wherever you meet the entry requirements for the event. You must pay your dues through the state charter where you maintain legal residence as determined by voting, tax, and/or drivers license laws. Dues are based on the calendar year. New members may pay next year’s dues after October 1 of the current year and will be eligible to participate in sanctioned events the final 3 months of the current year, as well as all of the next year.

As a member of the Missouri Charter, you will receive Shoe Biz three times a year free of charge. This will keep you informed of events within our state. Our statistician will be recording your pitching stats from all sanctioned events and will be forwarding these stats to the NHPA stats headquarters, called NatStats. These stats are updated weekly and can be accessed through either the NHPA or the MOHPA websites. To make all of this possible, your NHPA card will have six digits followed by two decimals. Missouri is region 19, followed by four digits, which are your number. The two decimals represent the calendar year. The decimal and color of the NHPA card change each year. Your number will remain with you as long as you reside in Missouri and continue to maintain your membership. If you ever lose your NHPA card, the charter secretary will issue you a duplicate card free of charge. You need only notify him.

Please fill in all information on the form below that applies to you and mail the application and total amount of dues to the MOHPA Sec/Treas. (address below) Please make checks payable to: MOHPA.
