Demystifying Splitter Ratings - How to really calculate Split Force

Splitter marketing makes VolksWagon’s diesel ratings look conservative. The exaggerations run industry wide, making it very difficult for consumers to really know what they are buying. Our BE Splitter is manufactured and promoted as an Industrial machine, with true “Split Force” performance, so we include this summary to help know what you are paying for. The effectiveness of a Splitter is determined by the hydraulic principle of “Split Force”. Note Split Force is measured in Tons, not Psi. The higher the Ton rating, the more effective the splitter will be. No marketing will change this basic principle. Of course, the sturdiness of manufacture, plus quality of engine, should also be taken into account, but this is obvious to the eye. Calculating Split Force Tons: You need the following information: Outside Diameter of the Cylinder: ie will be between 3.5”, 4”, 5” or 5.5” (most likely 4.5”) Max Hydraulic Pump Pressure: ie will be between 3000 & 3500 Psi (hydraulically impossible for splitter pumps to be more than 3625 Psi max) Using our LS22TL as an example: 4.0 x 4.0 (Cylinder bore ie ID) times 3.14 and divide by 4. Then multiply by splitter Psi of 3400 = 42,704 lbs. Divide by 2204 = 20Ton Split Force

How big a splitter do I need ?

We are human, so get the biggest splitter you can afford. Bigger means better and faster splitting, but any true 20 Tonne machine will split wood Some gnarly, twisted logs or crotches may cause the splitter to slow, or you may have to make a couple attempts at the log, but it will eventually split it. The tougher pieces make use of the slower, more powerful stage of the two-stage pump, but it gets the job done. Those who say their splitter has split everything they've thrown at it just haven't been splitting tough wood. If you want faster cutting time, or have really bad wood, move up the ratings to a 24, 30 or 38 Ton machine. The 30 Ton tends to be the popular option, being the best model you can buy while still only needing a well priced 6.5 Hp engine
