Primary Care 2015 Update for Nurses
> OverviewThis course is designed for the US Department of State (DOS) to provide an annual educational forum for their locally engaged staff nurses. These health care providers face a wide array of clinical issues, from the simple and routine health care visit to the complex and challenging care of acute and chronic symptoms and disease states. The content is collaboratively developed between the course provider and the continuing education team at the DOS and is based on real experiences and updates in medical knowledge. As the only course these nurses may attend during the year, the interaction between the faculty and the attendees is critical to the course’s success and encompasses theatre style presentations to informal small group discussions and hands-on skills sessions.
> Learning Objectives 1. Review the current status, challenges, and new initiatives of MED programs. 2. Discuss medical-ethical-legal dilemmas overseas. 3. Review the Health Unit Standard Assessment Survey. 4. Reviewissuesrelatedtoconflictresolution. 5. Review late-breaking infectious disease “outbreaks” and lessons learned. 6. Discuss updates in screening recommendations for preventive care. 7. Review immunization recommendations and vaccine administration techniques. 8. Review infection control issues and protocols related to personal protective equipment (PPE). 9. Discuss wound assessment, cleansing, preparation, anesthetic techniques, suture closure techniques, and post-closure
wound management. 10. Discuss techniques for performing clinical nursing procedures. 11. Review updates on diabetes.12. Review updates on liver disease.13. Discuss current guidelines, recognition, diagnosis, and treatment for common musculoskeletal issues.14. Review updates on aging health issues.15. Review clinical pearls for the pediatric patient in primary care.16. Review point of care lab testing procedures. 17. Discuss quality improvement issues that relate to nurse licensing and competencies.18. Review updates on obstetric medical evacuations.19. Review regional medical issues and updates.
