Primary @ Reddam Dear Parents and Caregivers, What a colourful week we have had at Reddam House! With our Sports Department hosting an outstanding Swimming Carnival, our Music Department showcasing our Elite Musicians and our English programme enhanced with Book Week preparations, the school has been a myriad of enjoyment and fun. A week like this makes visible the wonderful life of a student at Reddam. I am thrilled to be able to confirm today that all primary classrooms will soon be fitted with re- verse cycle heating and cooling air conditioner systems, which is most exciting. We just await Energy Australia's go ahead on additional power generated to our campus to accommodate the installation and running of these A/C units. The Swimming Carnival went off without a hitch and the smiles on the students’ faces as they emerged from the water, spent from the huge effort, spoke a thousand words. The Year 6 Sports Leaders and House Captains were excellent role models for the younger children and incredibly helpful to the Sports Department. On the day, filled with excitement and challenge, it was the top swimmers who stood out from the crowd, well deserving of their ribbons and awards. Con- gratulations to all the students who achieved ribbons for a podium finish and especially to the age champions: Kayla Parkes, Mia Jonson, Charlotte Budd, Frederika Schneideman, Xiao Cao Neal, Weston Budd, Jordan Shalome, Dasher Stewart, Juilian Shalome and Brooklyn Berry; and to the runners up in each age group: Imogen Baldasarre, Annika Landa, Victoria Zeritis, Nikki Col- lins, Emma Bruce, Daniel Super, Anthony Chuang, Edan Angus, Alex Law and Noah Paver. Of course, the day was not only about individual winners but about the inter house competition, which was hotly contested. In third place was Bondi on 579 points. Coogee came in second with 748 points, and Bronte triumphed on the day with a massive 980 points. With number like these, it is clear to see that more students than ever before took part in the day which was wonderful. Thank you to all the teaching staff for their assistance on the day: Gayle Eitzen, Jessica Harrison, Nicole Caplan, Jo Muirhead, Vicki Bakes, Amy McNally, Sandra Graham, Maria Bjeletic, Christo- pher Stone, Aimee Broadbent, Erin Vink, Helen Chadwick, Wendy Halperin, Lauren Tischendorf, Anthony Shepherd, Tanya Bethune, Sue Goodman, Nick Hawke, Tessa Dorfan, Dean Hattingh, Delia Harrington, Karin Mervis, Taryn Zeh, Sunny Rong, Denis Do, Jenson Lui, Mark Bailey, Aman- da William, Jeannine Shainfeld, Angela Orfanos, Roberta Perkins, Rikki Markson, Sue Goodman, Belinda Tomarchio, Estelle Hoen, Claudia Perez and Marie Manche. In particular, thank you to the incredible Sports Department, Phil Kable, Matt Carter, Tom Cooper and Annabelle Carter, for their outstanding organisation and excellent attention to detail. The day was a success due to the hard work before the event and on the day. At Monday night’s Elite Musician’s recital, many students from our Primary School gathered in Adelaide Hall for the first music event of the year. Seeing the joy on the faces of children as young as 5 years old is something truly special and to be admired. Another element of the even- ing making it unique was that there were many different instruments played allowing the stu- dents and the audience a chance to hear some new sounds and enjoy some new instruments. Thank you to the Music Department for preparing the students for the event and for providing the audience with such an enjoyable experience. Our Year 1 students attended their excursion to Taronga Zoo this week and what a fantastic day they

had! It sounds like the children had a blast using their senses to observe and study various animals

and their man made habitats in the zoo. I was happy to hear that the students were incredibly well

behaved and that they intuitive and clever questions of their guide. Well done, Boys and Girls!

This week was an exciting week for Isabellla Devine and Rosa Gordos who are heading to the USA in

June as part of the Australian team to compete in the International Future Problem Solving Confer-

ence. On Tuesday, the organisation revealed the topic for the conference which is ‘Energy of the Fu-

ture’ and both girls are excited about getting their teeth stuck into the research for this event.

In more sports news, I am thrilled to congratulate Grant Stein and his U14 Sydney Comets basketball

team which won the Coastal Classic tournament recently in a tight game against St George. The

team is undefeated, having scored 38 wins in the last year odd and certainly are a cut above the

rest. This is a fantastic achievement and we are thrilled for Grant and his team.

Talia Shapiro, one of our most avid sportswomen, has been training hard for her upcoming Little Ath-

letics State Multi-Event Championships. The championships take place in Dubbo this weekend and

we wish Talia the best of luck for her range of events.

Next week, the Annual Piano Competition will be held on Monday night in Adelaide Hall. Many of our

students will be performing for an external adjudicator who will, no doubt, be both impressed and

pleased with the standard in the competition. Best of luck to all the participants.

To all the sports teams competing this weekend, I wish the best of luck.

What a wonderful day we had on Tuesday, when our students took part in their very first Red-

dam House swimming carnival. The bus trip to the beautiful pool in Drummoyne was exciting

and after much organisation, the children were all seated and ready to swim! Mr Cooper

and Miss Carter led many fun activities in the pool and the children took great delight diving

and scooping up the balls to fill the coloured house baskets. They returned to school a little

weary but produced some amazing recounts of the day's events.

The teachers were so proud of our kindy students and the wonderful manner in which they

participated and behaved throughout the day. Well done Kindy, we are looking forward to

our next excursion.

Ethan Chang: I liked cheering for Coogee house when the big children were swimming.

Zoe Ching: Getting in the pool and swimming was my favourite part.

Ethan Song – I liked swimming and catching the balls in the water.

Istvana Etherington – I liked catching the balls.

Jade Chandra: I liked going underwater to get the balls.

Sophie Laufer-Robertson: I liked the teachers being in the pool and swimming with us.

"There's so much stuff I loved about it I don't know

which one was the best! I'll go with the crocodiles."

Joshua Gellet

"I liked seeing the meerkats because I really want to

be one, they're so cute."

Dakota Fielding

Year 2 students have been learning how to use analogue clocks to tell the time. They have

looked at telling the time on the hour, quarter past, half past and quarter to. They have used

hands-on materials to follow teacher instructions and have followed up these activities with

some reinforcement by using differentiated worksheets.

YEAR 2

The Reddam House Primary School Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 6 Friday 4 March 2016 Page 9

In Mathematics, the Year 3 students have been honing their skills in problem solving, using the

operations of addition and subtraction. They have been learning to identify key words and

phrases, such as ‘find the difference’ and ‘how many altogether’, and to use the 3-step

method to dissect each problem and show their mathematical thinking. The students have

relished the chance to show off not only their understanding of mathematical vocabulary

but also their skills in writing number sentences, addition and subtraction algorithms and word

sentences to solve these tricky problems. Way to go Year 3!

The Primary School swimming carnival was also a huge success with Year 3 students and

teachers proudly wearing their House colours, performing their House cheers and competing

in a number of exciting events. Their efforts were truly inspiring as they swam with such confi-

dence and enthusiasm. They were a credit to themselves and the school.

In other news, congratulations to 3D on a fantastic assembly item last Friday. All of the stu-

dents performed with confidence and clarity and taught us a lot of really interesting facts

about minibeasts! Thanks 3D!

YEAR 3

This week, the Year 4 teachers were very proud of the students' participation and attitude

during Tuesday's swimming carnival. It was a wonderful sunny day and the children enjoyed

being together with their friends, singing the house chants and encouraging each other in

and out of the pool. Congratulations to all our race winners and participants!

In Maths this week, the students have been learning more strategies for calculating multipli-

cation and division equations. Problem solving work has allowed students to apply their

knowledge and to practice their reading comprehension skills.

In History, students have learnt how the Australian indigenous people’s lives were prior to Eu-

ropean settlement and how their lives were affected afterwards. Well done Year 4 on an ex-

cellent week of academic, social and swimming activities!

YEAR 4

It has been an exhilarating few weeks for the Year 6 Media

Arts children so far. They have been busy creating their very

own game character using both traditional and digital forms

of art making. Students were introduced to a variety of ap-

plications on their iPads as well as reflecting and applying

their knowledge of traditional methods and mediums

based on the elements and principals of art and design to

create depth and colour to their works. We are all excited to

see the final products of these talented students. Here's a

sneak peak of one of the digital creations created by one

of our students.

So far in the mathematics classroom it has

been a term filled with many new and excit-

ing ideas and activities. The year 5 students

have learned to read and write really big

numbers – most can say numbers with digits of

more than 18 digits! They have learned about

the base 10 number system, which is the most

common number system used today. It has 10

digits (0–9) that can be combined to write

any number. The base 10 system was invent-

ed by Hindus and Arabs in ancient India. For

this reason, the digits 0–9 are called the Hindu-

Arabic number system. Both year 5 and 6

have studied the Roman Numeral System and

have subsequently realised the importance of the ‘Zero’ as a place holder in the Hindu Ara-

bic number system.

In contrast to the base 10 system, the Year 6 Extension class have learned about Binary num-

bers - a system involving only two elements, 0 and 1 or yes and no. Binary look strange when

they are written out directly. This is because the digits' weight increases by powers of 2, rather

than by powers of 10. The year 6 class had heaps of fun using their fingers to count in binary.

Tom Littler used a combination of his knowledge of binary, base-10 and letters of the alpha-

bet to develop a secret code.

Noah Klugman also presented the computer programme that he brilliantly designed, which

coverts between binary and base 10. Be sure to find Noah so he can share his outstanding

converter.

MATHEMATICS

The first of our music evenings for Primary School was held Monday this week. It was a truly

delightful evening and very pleasing to see and hear so many of our students prepared so

early in the year to perform and at a very high standard. Students from Year 1 through to

Year 6 performed across the instrument range. Egor Grachev (Year 1) performed a piano

work 'Horse Sense'; Atticus Day (Year 4) sang 'Home on the Range'; Ashton Child (Year 4)

played a Jazz number of piano, 'Mini Mouse Hits the Town'; Gabriel Jones (Year 6) sang 'The

Blue Bells of Scotland'; Yoni Herz (Year 6) performed on his Saxophone 'These Foolish Things';

Sienna Opit (Year 6) sang 'Perfect Day'; Harry Kuang (Year 3) performed a Clementi Sonatina

on piano; Lily Ogrin (Year 5) sang 'Alice-Blue Gown'; Julien Chuang (Year 3) played Bach's

Bouree on violin; Zachery Ahrens (Year 6) sang 'Barbara Allen'; Yasha Ivanets (Year 5) per-

formed a movement of Korarowsky's Violin Concerto No.2; Charlotte Benmayor (Year 4) sang

'Golden Summer'; Gabriel Stafford (Year 6) performed Estudio on Classical Guitar; Harry Nunn

-Price (Year 6) sang 'Passing By'; and Anthony Chuang (year 4) performed Faure's cello work

'Elegie'.
