Who is Banksy?
Let’s talk about the British artist Banksy. All the art you saw on the last slide
was created in the 20th Century. Banksy is a modern artist, working now.
Pseudonym:A ‘fake’ or fictional
name, usually used by an artist or author.
Banksy is a a
pseudonym. Nobody really knows his real
name, or what he
looks like! Here are some of his works of
art. Can you guess which
medium Banksy uses in his artworks? What does he create
them on?

Who is Banksy?
Banksy doesn’t just use spray paint to
create his art. He is also known for art
installations and for art stunts which make people think, (you’ll find out more about
these later!)
Art installations:Art that is 3D and
takes place in a certain area.
He once created a
fake theme park, with
lots of deliberately
horrible attractions!
The park was called “Dismaland”!

Why are we talking about this?
Auction:A type of selling where
things are sold to the
person who offers the
most money (the
highest bidder).
The artwork you saw
being shredded was
called ‘Balloon Girl’. It was a very famous
painting up for sale in
an auction.
People think the painting will be worth even more
money now that it is shredded. Many people called what Banksy did a ‘stunt’; something he did
deliberately to attract attention.
Banksy secretly installed a shredding
machine into the picture frame years ago. As soon as the lady bought the
painting, it was destroyed!

Fans of Banksy’s work weren’t too
surprised by his stunt. Many people think he did it to make a point about art being
too expensive.

What is art?
You may have noticed that a
lot of Banksy’s work is painted
on public walls. This is known
as graffiti. Have you seen
graffiti before?
Even though some graffiti
may look nice, it’s
painted on walls that
usually don’t belong to
the artist, and costs a lot of money to rub off. 0:00-

Have you changed your
mind?
For this reason some people say that
Banksy’s work isn’t art because it’s graffiti.

Despite this, most people say that art is a form of expression
that causes an emotional reaction. It doesn’t matter how
it’s made or drawn, it’s the meaning. Do you agree?

Why is some art more expensive than others?
The huge price paid for Banksy’s ’Balloon Girl’ has
made people think about how expensive art is,
especially as it may be worth more now that it has
been shredded!
Which one of these
three art works
would you pay the
most for? Why?

Fun fact! The most expensive
painting ever sold
was ‘Salvator Mundi’
by Leonardo da
Vinci. It sold for just
over £300 million!
©VotesForSchools2018
Why is some art more expensive than others?
You may have
chosen the one that
looked the most
beautiful to you…
or the one that
reminded you most of something in your
life…
or the one you
thought showed
the most artistic
talent….
Or the one you
thought would look
the best on your
wall!
It’s hard to agree on one thing
that makes art worth buying.
It’s usually up to the person
buying. We call this
subjectivity.

Why is some art more expensive than others?
Let’s go back to Banksy’s
shredded painting. It is now expected to be worth even
more than the £1 million it
was before!
Perhaps the shredded
painting has a special
meaning and this is why people are willing to pay
more for it…
Explore the ideas in bubbles behind why
Banksy shredded his art.
Why do you think he did
it?He just
wanted
attention
He knew it
would make
him more
money
He
wanted to
destroy it
He wanted to
make a point that
rich people spend
their money on the
wrong things
He wanted to
show that art
shouldn't be
about money
• Banksy was trying to make even more
money for this stunt at the auction. He
wanted to become even more
famous, and art shouldn’t be about
just making money.
• You can’t just destroy or ruin
something and call it ‘art’. Isn’t art
about making things, not ruining
them!
• Now that the original artwork is ruined,
it no longer counts as a work of art.
• It doesn’t take much skill to destroy
something, so surely it can’t be art.

• Banksy is making a point about how
much we value art, and how much
we pay too much for an artist that is
popular.
• Banksy wanted to destroy his art
work to show how silly it is for it to be
worth more. And sending that
message is art in itself.
• Just because the work is half-
destroyed, doesn’t make it less of a
work of art. It just means it’s a new
work of art!
