Because we can’t visit zoos
right now, many people
have been watching “zoo
cams” online!

People often celebrate when animals in zoos give
birth, like this sun bear. This is because lots of animals
are endangered species.
Endangered:Soon it may not exist because there are not many alive.
If endangered animals cannot
breed and have babies, they
become extinct. This means they don’t exist anymore, like
the Spix’s Macaw – the birds that inspired the film Rio!

Scientists are worried about the speed at which wildlife
is becoming extinct today. More than 26,0001 species
are threatened with extinction (that’s more than a quarter of all wildlife).

out why and how animals
become extinct.

What’s happening to our wildlife?
But how and why do animals become extinct?
Challenge:Can you write
down the two
ways animals
become
extinct?

Extinction has happened to many
different species already. Can you name the extinct animals from
just their skeletons?
Dinosaurs
Dodo
The reason many animals are at
risk now is because humans are
responsible for destroying their
habitats and making them
endangered by…
Habitat:The place where an
animal lives which
provides food,
water and shelter. Mammoth
… chopping
down trees…
…and polluting
land and sea.

Why is wildlife important?
Animals/plants
humans enjoy
Animals/plants
humans need
Think about it (5 mins)Before you look at the
different ways wildlife is
important, make a list of
all the animals and plants
that you can think of that
people enjoy and need.
Then, as we go through the different
ways humans use wildlife, tick them off your list.
In here, put animals
or plants that
people depend on (ones they need in
order to survive).

It’s obvious that some animals
and plants are really important to humans…
Depend on:To need something in
order to live or continue.
We give people flowers or
plants as gifts.
But animals and plants aren’t just important to us
because we like them. We actually depend on them for different reasons…
Some animals are part of
our daily diet, like chickens (used for meat and eggs).
Pets like dogs and cats
make us feel happy.

Bats help spread seeds and eat insects that destroy fruit trees! They make sure we have
plenty of fruit.

Ants make tiny air holes in soil which keeps it
healthy and allows it to grow all sorts of crops
and plants…

Wildlife survives in rural areas.
These are areas with lots of green
space and not many buildings, so
plants can grow, and animals can live there without being
disturbed or put in danger.
Urban areas are places with
lots of buildings, like towns and cities. These are where
many people live. Animals
and plants are not as
common here.
I would rather… (2-3 mins)With a friend or family
member, answer these
questions:
Do you live in a rural or urban area?
What type of area would you
prefer to live in and why?
©VotesForSchools2020
This would mean half the Earth is just for
wildlife and the other half would be for cities,
farms, roads, towns and schools.
Green = protected
for wildlife
This map shows where the protected wildlife areas in the UK
are. People can visit these areas, but they must be careful
to look after the wildlife and cannot build houses there.
Across the whole world, about 15% is protected for
wildlife, but some scientists think that this isn’t
enough. They say that at least half (50%) of the world
should be protected to grow plants and stop
animals from becoming extinct.

Rural areas Urban areas
This map shows where the cities and
wild areas in the UK are.
Count them up
(3-5 mins)Look closely at the map of
the UK. How many squares
are rural areas and how
many are urban? Which
has more squares?
Number of rural areas:
Number of urban areas:
Challenge:How many squares would we need to
give to wildlife to make it equal? What
problems might this cause?

Yes No
• If we don’t want animals to
become extinct, then we need
to give them more space.
• It is only fair that we give half of
the world to wildlife. We will still
have the other half to live in.
• At the moment only 15% of earth
is protected for wildlife. This isn’t
enough.
• …
Should we give half of Earth to
wildlife?
• Animals can live in zoos and
farms in urban areas and survive
that way.
• There are too many people in
the world – we won’t all fit in 50%
of the world.
• We should definitely give more
land to wildlife, but half is too
much.
• …

It doesn’t matter whether you live in a city, a town or a village – you can help
protect wildlife too! Use these ideas to help protect the wildlife around you!
Feed birds Grow plants Pick up litter
Help protect birds by
making your own
feeder. Place seeds,
fruit or bread
somewhere up high
and see how many
birds come to visit!
Insects like bees needs
plants to survive. You
can help by growing
your own plants in
your garden or in pots
on your windowsill!
Animals could eat or
get trapped inside
litter that is left on the
floor. You can help by
making sure your
garden and local
area is kept tidy.
