Alabama continues to export a wide range of products from many industry sectors with all major industries in the state involved in exporting. The state ranked 23rd in the nation for dollar value of exports in 2013. Alabama companies shipped products to 200 countries in 2013, with the top five destination markets including Canada ($4.3 billion, with 8% growth), China ($2.5 billion, with 3.6% growth), Germany ($2.2, billion with a decrease of 12%), Mexico ($2.2 billion, with 9% growth) and the United Kingdom ($693 million, with 0.1% growth). Canada and Mexico, our North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, accounted for some $6.5 billion or nearly 34 percent of Alabama’s total exports. Exports to China grew from $2.39 billion to $2.48 billion, or 3.6 percent, during the same period, moving China into second place in the state’s top export destinations. The state’s largest product export category remained transportation equipment, which rose from $7.69 billion to $8.35 billion between 2012 and 2013, representing a growth of 8.64 percent. Other top exports included chemicals ($2.5 billion), primary metals ($1.5 billion), minerals and ores ($1.4 billion) and forestry products ($1 billion). Total receipts for Alabama’s top ten export sectors reached $17.9 billion, or 93 percent of total exports. Exports from Alabama to the 20 free trade agreement countries increased six percent from 2012 to 2013. Strong increases were seen in Alabama exports to Panama (138%), Guatemala and Nicaragua (58% each), Chile (25%) and Australia (22%). Two-way trade between Alabama and the world totaled over $44 billion during 2013. During this period, Alabama imported some $24.8 billion worth of goods with top products in the minerals, metals, high-technology, transportation and chemical industries. The top five import markets included Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Venezuela and South Korea. With more than 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power located outside the U.S., Alabama companies are looking at markets beyond our borders, where demand is growing. International trade enhances the quality of life for all Alabamians and contributes to the state’s prosperity. Creating jobs through exports for the state’s citizens is key in accelerating Alabama globally. Alabama State Port Authority Alabama's only deep-water seaport terminals are located at the Port of Mobile, just 32 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The seaport handles more than 55 million tons annually. The full service, public seaport terminals are owned by the Alabama State Port Authority and are served by major ocean carriers on Asian, European, Mediterranean and Latin American trade lanes. In 2013, cargo through the public terminals topped 25 million tons serving container, general cargo, dry and liquid bulk, frozen poultry and oversized and heavy lift operations. Since 2008, the Port Authority has invested in new facilities and Post-Panamax infrastructure at the Port of Mobile. In 2013, the Port Authority began construction on its Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) to support expanding domestic and international containerized shipper markets.
