Dear Parents,

This week’s newsletter comes to you from the far east of Germany, around 50km from the Czech border. We are here with our Year 6 students for a wonderful camp experience. So far this week, we have visited the historic city of Dresden, seen the amazing sandstone cliffs of Saxon Switzerland and the world renowned Bastei bridge, used GPS devices to navigate the town of Colditz, had a tour of our home for the week - Colditz Castle – a former World War 2 prisoner of war camp with a fascinating history, we’ve been canoeing, hiking and also done a little shopping. The children have, as expected, been wonderful ambassadors for ISH and they have loved every minute of this experience. This completes our programme of school camps for this year where, for the first time, we have had children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 away on residential camps. I know these will form memorable experiences for our children – I still remember all of my school camps.

We are now very close to the end of the school year, with so much still to do. Our Yearbook is now ready and will go on sale within the next few days. It’s a great publication, full of wonderful memories of the 2011-2012 school year. Thanks go to Kate Henning, Vicki Doamekpor and Sarah Goodhand for coordinating this lengthy process so well and of course, to Christel van Meeuwen for her amazing photography.

On Monday we have an evening on The Brain. This is just an opportunity for us to share some information with you about how our children’s brains work and ways we can adjust our teaching (both teachers and parents!) to maximize learning. We are not neuroscientists but several of us have recently attended conferences on learning and the brain, and some of us have developed a real fascination for this area. If you are able to, please join us at school from 6pm onwards on Monday (25th June). I’m sure you’ll find something interesting to take away with you.

I wish you all a pleasant weekend.Kind regards,

Graeme Scott

Mother TongueMother tongue within the curriculumDue to end of year parties, Tuesday, 26 June will be the last lesson of Mother Tongue within the curriculum. I would like to thank the teachers that have helped to design the curriculum. A big thank you too to all the secondary CAS and C&S students, they have been fantastic MT buddies. Finally, thank you so much to all parents that invested their time by joining the MT time. The children have appreciated your support. Mother Tongue after schoolThis week we had the last week of MT after school with the exception of Portuguese and German; these will need to catch up on missed classes. We will say thank you good bye to three MT teachers this year: Ms. Das Neves Dias, Ms. Driedonks and Ms. Hontoria. We wish them all the best with their future projects. All the best to Ms. Driedonk, we hope to hear from her when she has her baby. Finally, we would like to say a special thank you to Ms. Hontoria. She has been part of the Mother Tongue programme from the beginning of the Spanish group 8 years ago, many of our Spanish speakers have been taught Spanish by her from Lower School straight through to Upper School! Ms. Hontoria is following her husband to Dubai. I am sure she will enjoy the heat and the sun there. We wish her all the best. Have a great summer and a lot of fun with your family!Pascale HertayDeputy Head

Mother Tongue within the Curriculum Dear Parents,Research on bilingualism strongly emphasises promoting multilingual student identities. Reinforcing that a strong mother tongue supports the development of an additional language, but also demonstrating the importance of teaching a language in a meaningful way through comprehensible input rather than in a grammatical way. In addition recommending making links between the two languages so that children can transfer their knowledge from one language to the other. The power of reading is also highlighted, by reading you improve not only reading skills, but also vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, grammar and verbs!

Primary NewsWe have an established and specialised EAL and MT programme in our school. However, there is more we try to include such as the support of regular MT in the daily curriculum. We encourage children to research topics in their MT before discussions or to present their findings in our common school language: English. Many of you are going back to your home countries for the holiday. We would like to encourage you to bring back books in your MT to support your children’s learning next year. To help you select relevant books please look at the list of the IPC topics that they will learn about in 2012-2013:Pre- Reception: All about me, Food, Let’s Pretend (traditional stories), Animals, Sand and WaterReception: All about me, Bears, Patterns, Going places, TreasureY1: Family and Friends, Houses and homes, Clothes, Flowers and Insects, HolidaysY2: Who am I?, Toys, Food, Senses, TransportY3: Dinosaurs, Visual representation of the world, Chocolate, Rainforest, WaterY4: Learning to learn (brain), Active Planet ( volcanoes..), Treasure, Fashion, Habitat, Health and fitness (how the body works)Y5: Learning to learn (brain), Making new materials, Home and host country (culture, geography and history), Feelings (art and emotions), Mission to Mars (space exploration o work out what they were. This will be the best way for them to develop their reading skills, expand their vocabulary and progress in their spelling!

I wish you all a lovely summer holiday!

Year 3 IPC Unit Clean Water and Dirty Water As part of our Clean Water, Dirty Water IPC topic, Year 3 went to the Secondary Science labs to look at pond water under the microscopes. We were amazed by all the things in it. We looked carefully at them and used an identification chart to work out what they were. We saw many water fleas, bloodworms, water spiders and lots of other pond life.
