Q1) What is your age group?
Under 1818 to 2425 to 3435 to 4445 to 5455 to 6465 to 74Over 75
Here you can see from the chart that I tried to aim my questionnaire towards people more my age because teenagers seem to be more interested in keeping themselves up to date with the latest music news and stories.

Q2) What is your gender?
MaleFemale
I asked both male and female participants to complete my questionnaire so that I could get a range of responses from both genders as everyone has their own different views on magazines.

Survey Monkey Results
Here you can see that of all the people I asked the majority favourite music genre was rap with 4/11. Combined with hip hop adds up to 5/11, sharing the the largest percentage on the pie. This shows that generally people favour rap over the different music genres such as pop and indie.

Q4) Do you take advantage of special of -fers / promotions in magazines?
YesNoI don't read mag-azines
Here you can see that the number of people who take advantage of offers in magazines dominates the number of people who don’t take advantage of it. I can use this to my benefit by attracting more people by including more special promotions and advertisements in my own magazine.

Q5) What type of promotions / offers appeal to you the most?
CouponsPrice ReductionsFree ProductsDemos and Samples
Survey Monkey Results
I found that the majority of people appealed to price reductions and free products, fewer people were attracted to demos and samples whilst no one appealed to coupons. This means that I shouldn’t include coupons as it is unlikely that people would actually use them.

Q6) How many times a month do you buy a music magazine?
Never1 to 23 to 45+
The majority of the people I asked never buy music magazines, leaving the rest of the 4 participants as frequent magazine readers. I can use this to decide how often I would release a new magazine issue.

Q7) How much money would you spend on a rap / hip-hop magazine?
£0.00 - £0.99£1 - £1.99£2 - £2.99£3 - £3.99£4 - £4.99£5 +
None of my participants would be willing to pay over £5 for a music magazine; the majority thought that the most reasonable / affordable price range would be from £0.00 to £0.99, which is quite cheap in my opinion. Following that there were 3 votes on both price ranges £2. - £2.99 and £3 - £3.99, which I think is a more realistic price. I’ll use this as a basis as to how much I will charge my magazine.

Q8) "Star Appeal" (Richard Dyer) is im-portant for selling a music magazine. On
a scale of 1 - 5 how strongly do you agree with this?
1 - Strongly Disagree
2 - Disagree
3 - Neutral
4 - Agree
5 - Strongly Agree
Survey Monkey Results
From the chart you can see that of the 11 people I asked, 5 of them had neutral feelings about how important they thought “star appeal” (Richard Dyer) was for a magazine. 4 people had chosen either agree or strongly agree; this means that this should be something I should consider in my own front cover.

Q9) Which convention(s) do you think attract the attention of an audience
most effectively?MastheadMain HeadlineMain ImageMain Cover LineCover LineOther
It is very clear here that the convention that relates the most to an audience is the main image, so that’s something I’ll have to bear in mind when creating my own magazine front cover to appeal to my audience.

Q10) What would you expect a double page spread to focus on in a music
magazine?
AdvertisementsInterviews / StoriesPhotos / Images
Again it seems that the photos and images are something that most people would expect in a double page spread. People were also fond of stories and interviews rather than advertisements. This lets me know what I should focus on in my double page spreads.
Survey Monkey Results
For my other form of primary research, I printed 10 questionnaires and went around the school asking students to complete it on the spot, I then gathered all of the results and broke it down into charts for each question; I’d used the same questions as I did on Survey Monkey. Below is a photograph of one of my friends completing a survey for me.

What is your age group?
Under 1818 to 2425 to 3435 to 4445 to 5455 to 6465 to 7475 or older
The data retrieved denotes that of the 10 people I asked to fill in my questionnaire, the majority of them were under the age of 18 as my magazine genre is aimed towards the younger generation.
55
What is your gender?
MaleFemale
This information simply displays that I wanted to keep my questionnaire results as fair as possible by asking the same amount of women as men to complete the survey; not only does this allow for different answers by different perspectives but I wanted to keep the numbers equal.

What is your favourite music genre?
PopRapHip hopRock / Heavy MetalIndie
This data denotes how there was a large variety of favourite music genres among the candidates who took part in my survey; of all these, rap was the most favoured genre taking a percentage of 30%on the chart.

Do you take advantage of special offers / promotions in music magazines?
Yes NoI don't read mag-azines
The chart above shows that the majority of candidates do not actually read music magazines, however, the remainder that do take advantage of special offers and promotions, suggesting that this would be an important convention to include in my own magazine.
55
What type of promotions / offers appeal to you most?
CouponsPrice ReductionsFree ProductsDemos and Samples
The data retrieved connotes that price reductions and free products are the most important offers and promotions to music magazine readers, meaning that this should be the primary form of advertisement in order to attract more readers into entering these sort of events.

How many times a month do you buy a music magaine?
Never1 to 23 to 45+
This information represents that the majority of people hardly ever buy a music magazine, with the exception of 1 person who only buys them once or twice a month. This could suggest that the demand for music magazines are quite low among the youth considering the ease of access to the internet.

How much money would you spend on a rap / hip-hop music magazine?
£0.00 - £0.99£1 - £1.99£2 - £2.99£3 - £3.99£4 - £4.99£5 +
Of the 10 candidates who’d taken my questionnaire, £2-£2.99 appeared to be the average price one would pay for a music magazine, particularly of the hip-hop and rap genre. I should base my own magazine’s price around the average expected cost so that it would appeal to more customers.

"Star Appeal" (Richard Dyer) is impor-tant for selling a music magazine. On a
scale of 1 to 5 how strongly do you agree with this?
1 - Strongly Disagree2 - Disagree3 - Neutral4 - Agree5 - Strongly Agree
The theory of Star Appeal seemed to be a very important convention on a music magazine in the way that it influenced the success of sales; none of the candidates had any negative views on the idea, either way this meant that I should use some form of Star Appeal on my NOTORIOUS magazine.

What conventions do you think attract the attention of an audience most ef -
fectively?MastheadMain HeadlineMain ImageMain Cover LineCover LineOther
The data retrieved denotes that the main image was the most important convention in terms of attracting the attention of audiences and potential customers. Although the other conventions seemed less significant, they all contributed in constructing the front cover, but I should pay a lot of attention to the main image.

What would you expect a double page spread to focus on in a rap / hip-hop
magazine?
AdvertisementsInterviews / StoriesPhotos / Images
As you can see above, all of the features mentioned were expected to be seen on a rap / hip-hop magazine. This can only connote that I should include all said features, focusing on each of them with detail.
