THE PURPOSE OF CO-CURRICULAR EDUCATION AT CGS

The Co-curricular Programme at Canberra Grammar School is part of our commitment to educating the whole person.

Our mission is to enrich the learning of our students and to promote a harmonious balance between all aspects of our Co-curricular offerings in terms of both commitments and opportunities.

The Co-curricular programme compliments our academic curriculum to further support the development of emotional and social intelligence. We endeavour to inspire and extend the interests, talents and skills of our students trhough the range of offerings included in our programme that allow our students opportunities to pursue their passions through age-appropriate activities at targeted developmental stages. These opportunities are carefully planned and promote inclusiveness to ensure students feel they belong.

There are many Sporting and Performing Arts activities offered, the range of which is regularly reviewed and, if necessary, amended to meet the needs and passions of the students. Students have the chance to engage in exciting Outdoor Education Trips and Cultural Understanding Tours, as well as participate in Horizons activities.

The experiences that make up the Co-curricular programme develop transferable social skills that include collaboration, commitment, leadership, and how to create their ‘whole self’. The hands-on nature of Co-curricular activities such as sports, debating, music and LEGO robotics, to mention a few, teaches students the ability to work with others. This creates a strong sense of belonging for students and promotes solid friendships and camaraderie.

We put an emphasis on employing and maintaining quality staff and coaches by providing continual professional development opportunities for them. This ensures we are consistently refining our programme to deliver quality Co-curricular opportunities.

Piccolini Strings EnsemblePiccolini Strings Ensemble is the beginning string ensemble at CGS and focuses on reinforcing the foundations of string technique and developing ensemble skills. Students will learn their parts through singing, aural repetition, note reading, and movement. Parts involve open strings and first finger notes with some harmony and melody lines. Pieces in the Piccolini Strings Ensemble are fun and engaging, with a focus on making music. This ensemble is offered for students in Kindergarten to Year 2.

Southside RecorderStudents in Years 1 and 2 who wish to learn a woodwind instrument, have the opportunity to start in the Recorder Ensemble. This group offers students a pathway for beginning the recorder, whilst also offering those who have previous experience, a chance to extend their skills into ensemble playing. The Recorder Ensemble has performance opportunities at School assemblies and events and gives students the opportunity to develop and practice their skills on the recorder in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere.

String EnsembleThe CGS Primary School String Ensemble is an extension programme created for ambitious young musicians as the next step in their musical development. The Primary School String Ensemble will consist of four to eight members from the String Orchestra who have demonstrated the unique skills to succeed both musically and socially in a chamber music setting. Chamber music is performed by a small group of musicians who are each responsible for their own part. As chamber music is performed without a conductor, students need to work together to make their own musical decisions. Chamber music is the passage between ensemble and solo performing, nurturing outstanding musicianship and develops skills in listening, communication, leadership, self-discipline and independence.

String OrchestraStudents who learn a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) are invited to participate in this ensemble. CGS SPORTStudents from Years 3 to 6 are are provided with participation opportunities in a range of sports.

We hope your child looks forward to taking up the various sporting opportunities available at CGS that suit their interests and abilities.

Our goal is that every student at CGS will engage with the wide variety of individual and team sports on offer. We hope that they can be challenged and find the fun and friendships that are possible on the court, field, pool, lake, and mountain.

SUMMER SPORTS

CricketCricket at CGS is one of the first sports the school offered. The traditions run deep as we have many of our alumni join our coaching staff. Cricket is the ultimate summer sport as it provides opportunity to showcase individual skills within a team setting.

Our cricketers enjoy competing with their friends on those nice summer evenings and mornings. This is an opportune time to build on sportsmanship and teamwork while playing a sport as unique as cricket. Our involvement with ACT Cricket strengthens our ties to the community, as we play against many independent schools and clubs within the ACT.

TriathlonTriathlon at CGS has been offered in the Junior School for nearly thirty years. Triathlon is an exciting sport that has grown rapidly within CGS over the past few years. Three disciplines are taught in triathlon; biking, running and swimming. This allows our students to challenge themselves in all three facets of the sport.

Our triathletes participate in many different competitions across the ACT. We have trainings at various locations including Black Mountain Peninsula and along Red Hill. This allows us to prepare these students for those competition days. Triathlon teaches discipline, commitment and resilience to our students as we prepare them for success beyond the classroom.

WINTER SPORTS

FootballFootball is one of the most popular sports at CGS. Our Junior School programme has over 130 students participating in the winter season as we focus on the early stages of football development in the U9s. As students progress through our programme, they receive instruction from our Technical Director of Football. This ensures the same coaching philosophy and principles are being taught from the Junior School through to the Senior School.

We compete in the Capital Football League in U10s, U11s and U12s. This allows us to play against some of the best competition in Canberra. It is during these competitions that our students apply skills learnt in the U9s and continue to develop life-long skills like perseverance, commitment and teamwork.

NetballNetball at CGS is one of the fastest growing sports in the school. Introduced last year in the Junior School, Netball saw over forty students participate during the winter season. The Junior School competed in its first ever Netball Championship last season and we are proud of our initial success and look to build on that as we progress.

Netball is a great sport that teaches critical thinking in a fast paced setting. Our coaches focus on the fundamental aspects of the game for the Year 3/4 team, which affords a better chance of success in the later stages of the Netball programme. In our Year 5/6 teams the coaches focus on strategies and refining techniques to prepare for competing at the Championships.

RugbyThe game of Rugby holds a special place within the history of private schooling, the history of Canberra and the fabric of CGS. From our early encounters with Canberra High through to our ongoing rivalry with St Edmund’s, CGS has embraced Rugby with all of its wonderful highs, its heart-breaking lows, it’s important life lessons, its community spirit and its lasting camaraderie. Rugby in the Primary School has strong ties to the Senior School Rugby Programme and the Rugby Association. We ensure the same coaching principles and philosophy in the Junior School Rugby teams so there is a measure of consistency throughout the entire programme.

Rugby in the Primary School allows both our female and male students to engage in physical pursuits as well as building relationships that will last a lifetime. Our Primary School teachers and coaches help build relationships beyond the classroom. They teach those critical components in sports like team work, compassion, responsibility and commitment that will help our students be ready for the world.

SPORTS OFFERED THE ENTIRE YEAR

BasketballBasketball at CGS is a sport that is played year-round by our students. The CGS Junior School Basketball Programme teaches life-long lessons like cooperation, dedication and teamwork. These skills will help our students reach their full potential as they mature into young adults.

Basketball in the Junior School has many ties to the Canberra community through Basketball ACT. We enjoy playing like-minded schools as well as club-based programmes. It is here that we truly demonstrate the values and beliefs of what it means to represent Canberra Grammar School.

OrienteeringOrienteering has been a part of the Primary School for over twenty years. We have strong ties to the community and to Orienteering ACT. Our programme participates in over 30 events throughout the year and all across Canberra. This allows our students to become familiar and confident while navigating the area.

Orienteering competes as a year-round activity, braving the brisk winter months and racing through the warm summer evenings. Through the guidance of our seasoned coaches, our students learn the importance of self-confidence, discipline and resilience. Orienteering is a sport that teaches these valuable life lessons plus many more.

TennisTennis at CGS is special and unique. It is one of the areas in the Co-curricular programme that teaches a life-long sport. Students will be able to participate in tennis for many years after learning the foundation level skills. Our Tennis students compete in match days against other players across Canberra throughout the season.

Tennis is rewarding but also challenging at CGS. Students will learn fundamentals and progressions throughout the programme. Tennis helps develop hand-eye coordination as well as gross motor and fine motor control. Tennis is a sport that also helps instil self-discipline and commitment in our students. Our new tennis facility complete with four professional grade tennis surfaces and two additional courts, along with our professional coaching, will help our Tennis students excel in their progression.

• Years 5 and 6 – Monday 3:30pm – 4:45pm and Wednesday 3:30pm – 4:45pm

* Please note that Year 3 students do not take part in Core Sports training on Wednesdays or have fixtures during Term 1 as we are halfway through the summer season.

It is an expectation that all students participate in one core sport each year during their time in the Junior School.

Where a sport is offered by the School, a student is required to play for a School team. In exceptional circumstances, approval for exemption needs to be sought from the Head of Primary School Sport and PE in writing, at the time of sports choice selection.

Exemption may be approved on the following grounds:

• The sport is not offered by the School

• The level of the sport is not offered by the School as demonstrated by the student’s ability.

If a student plays for an outside organisation, he or she is not to compete against the school. An exception to this condition is where a student new to the School is already playing mid-season for an outside organisation. However, it is understood that at the conclusion of that season, the student will then come and play for the School.

As outlined under the ‘Conditions of Acceptance of a Place’ at Canberra Grammar School, it is understood that parents and students are expected to uphold the policies and rules of the School, including those relating to participation in School sport.

Students are to attend training and matches in the appropriate CGS uniform.

CODES OF CONDUCT

CGS PLAYERSThe following points provide clear guidelines for the conduct of students at all School sporting events. The expectations are consistent with the purposes and values of the School, and students representing the School are expected to abide by them at all times. Such practices will help ensure the most benefit is gained by all participants and will enhance the reputation of CGS.

Code of Behaviour• Students are to uphold the CGS values by their attitude and behaviour

• Students should participate in sport for their own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches

• Students are to commit equally hard to themselves and their team. The team’s performance will benefit as will you, as a player

• Students are to show good sportsmanship; applaud all good plays whether they are made by your team or the opposition

• Students are to play by the rules

• Students must never argue with an official. If there is disagreement, the captain, coach or manager may raise the matter at an appropriate time and in an appropriate manner

• Students are expected to cooperate with coaches and should not objectionably challenge an instruction. If an objection is to be raised, it should be done respectfully and appropriately. Where a matter needs further resolution, a student should take it up with the Head of the sport or the Primary Head of Sports and PE

• Students are to retain self-control at and during games. Verbal abuse of officials, sledging of other players, or deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not acceptable in any sport

• Students should respect all participants in all sports. Bullying, heckling or taking unfair advantage of another competitor is not to occur

• Students must respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion; and

• Students at the conclusion of a game are to collectively thank the referee or other officials, and should also individually thank their coach before leaving the venue. The Captain should thank the opposition coach at the conclusion of a game.

PARENTSCGS is enormously grateful for the support that parents give to School sport as spectators, managers, and in some cases, as coaches. However, we ask all parents to appreciate the School’s Code of Behaviour for sport and to understand the lines of communication if there are grievances about decisions or actions taken by referees and coaches.

Code of Behaviour• Parents are asked to remember that students participate in sport for their enjoyment and wellbeing.

It is important to focus on the students’ efforts and performance rather than on whether they win or lose. Students learn best from positive examples and encouragement rather than from negative criticism

• Parents must refrain from physically interfering with any player, coach or official either from the School or the opposition, and they are asked not to reprimand, ridicule or yell at any participant for making a mistake or losing a game

• Parents are to resolve any perceived difficulties with members of their own team or other parents through the appropriate School contact. They should not seek to resolve matters independent of the School

• Parents must not directly interfere with the coaching or briefing of a team by the coach. Where there is a concern over a decision, practice, or matters relating to a student, parents are asked to wait until there is an appropriate time and in an appropriate manner, raise the matter in the first instance with the coach. If the matter is not satisfactorily resolved, parents are asked to contact the Head of the sport and/or the Primary Head of Sports and PE

• It is essential that parents encourage students to play by the rules and to settle disagreements civilly without ever resorting to hostility or violence. Parents are asked to support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities

• Parents are encouraged to acknowledge good performance and skilful play by all participants and to show appreciation to coaches, officials and administrators

• Parents should respect officials’ decisions and expect students to do likewise, even if they disagree; and

• Parents should respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

COACHESThe coaching of CGS students is undertaken by teaching staff and a large number of external coaches employed by the School. External coaches are expected to conduct training and treat students in a professional manner, allowing students and teams to reach full potential in a competitive sporting environment. All coaches must display the same standards of positive and respectful professional conduct, language and tone as the School would expect in a classroom. Mandatory Working With Vulnerable People registration is now required by all coaches.

Code of Behaviour• Coaches are to uphold the CGS values and adhere to the policies and procedures as outlined by the

School

• Remember that students participate in sport for pleasure, to develop friendships and to develop skills and fitness. Winning is only part of the fun

• Coaches must never ridicule or yell at students for making a mistake or not winning

• Coaches are to be reasonable in their demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm

• At all times, coaches are to operate within the rules and spirit of the sport coached, thereby teaching players to do the same

• Remember to ensure the time students spend with you is a positive experience. All students are deserving of equal attention and opportunities

• Coaches are to avoid overplaying the talented players at the expense of other players who need and deserve equal time

• Coaches are to ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players

• Coaches are to display control, respect and professionalism to all involved with the sport. This includes opponents, opposition coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. They are to encourage players to do the same

• Coaches have a duty of care to show concern and caution towards sick and injured players. They must follow the advice of a medical professional when determining whether an injured player is ready to recommence training or competition. If there is doubt, coaches must not allow the player to return to the game

• Coaches must obtain and complete an ‘Incident Form’ when a student is injured. The report is to be submitted to the School (Primary Head of Sport and PE) at the earliest opportunity following an incident

• Coaches are to obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young people

• Coaches need to be aware that any physical contact with students should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development; and

• Coaches are to respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

It’s tempting to focus on academic results when researching school options for your child. However, it’s imperative to think of education more holistically and consider your child’s other needs. Co-curricular programmes in schools can give parents an insight into how schools view other areas of development, such as building self-esteem, gaining cultural experiences, developing leadership skills, and giving back to the community. A school’s co-curricular programme can also be indicative of the pastoral care approach and the school’s education philosophy.
