We put these things in to alphabetical order so that they are easier to find, e.g. words in a dictionary, names in the register in school, toys in the store room. We look at the first letter to find and see where things belong. For example; Amy, Beth, Caoimhe, Dylan, Ethan, Frank, Grace. These names are written in alphabetical order. We know this because their first letters appear in the same order as they do in the alphabet - ABCDEFG. The words cat , mouse, and zebra are also written in alphabetical order, because c, m and z appear in this order in the alphabet. You can choose any items you wish. Just say their names, identify the first letter in each, then order the items according to where each of these letters belongs in the alphabet. Activity 3 Comprehension Skills Comprehension skills are taught and reinforced over a long period of time. Successful reading comprehension requires being able to understand, summarise, retell, and use what has been read.

In Primary 2 developing comprehension skills involves; • reading strategies i.e. using picture cues, phonics skills etc. • recognising key words • beginning to read with some fluency • building a good vocabulary • developing an understanding the text.

Parents Please inform your child that this week we are contiuing to work on our abilities to read, understand, and discuss what we have read.

Parents & Pupils: Please copy this link:

https://connect.collins.co.uk/school/teacherlogin.aspx, and log on to access Big Cat reading resources using the

following details:

Username: [email protected] Password: Parents20!

Choose a book suitable to your reading ability i.e. on the left

hand side choose colours; pink, red (levels 1-2)

yellow, blue, green, or orange (levels 3-4). Turn down the volume so that you can read independently. Then scroll to find some comprehension questions below. Adult support

is required, and questions can be answered orally.

Area of Learning: Numeracy

Activity 1 – Mental Maths Parents Please inform your child that this week we are revising the number bonds 1 - 6. Click on the following link and select some number bond videos between 1 and 6. You might want to watch more than one of the videos or focus on the number bond(s) your child needs some practise on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLuoYNmxkkU&list=PLnTQ6LU1fWec4NbwM2hN9fV_dZt2LelGS

Pupils Practise recalling the number bonds as you watch the videos. Now try recalling the number bonds yourself! Choose 3 numbers between 1-6, and create diagrams to show the different ways to make each number. Look at the pictures below for some ideas!

Activity 2 – Money Parents Gather the following coins: Levels 1&2 - 2p 5p 1p 10p 20p Levels 3&4 – 50p £1 5p 1p 2p 10p 20p This week we are learning to: Levels 1&2 - make amounts using 1p, 2p and 5p coins. Levels 3&4 - calculate the change required when buying items at a shop.

Pupils Set the coins out on a surface in any random order. Ask an adult to time you naming each coin. Can you try again and beat your time? Play ‘Show Me’ with an adult. Parents Call out various questions about the coins your child has in front of them e.g. Show me the coin that is bronze and is less than 5p. Show me the 2 coins that make 7p when added together etc. Watch the appropriate money video and follow the instructions given.

Activity 3 – Length

Parents: Please explain to your child that this week we are learning to measure length. Length measures how long, tall, or how far apart objects are. To estimate or to give a general idea of size we can use our hands, toy blocks, or footsteps to measure length. These are called non-standard units.

Investigation Grid Estimate the length of a

room in your house by the amount of footsteps you take from one wall to

another. You could compare this to the length of another room in your house. Which

room is longer/shorter?

Gather various objects from your house or outside and

order them from the shortest to the longest.

Build a tower using objects/toys from home e.g. blocks, lego, tin

cans etc. Now, try to build a tower that is taller OR smaller!

Area of Learning: World Around Us Topic: Under The Sea

Activity: The Great Barrier Reef

Parents

We are going to focus our learning on the Great

Barrier Reef in Austrailia this week. It is home to

all kinds of amazing animals and it has the longest

coral reef in the world! Coral looks like a plant, but

it is actually a living animal.

Click on the link below to learn some more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61RzwbaSoeU

Pupils:

Design a poster about the coral in the Great Barrier

Reef. Include a picture of the coral, labelled drawings

of the animals that live here and some sentence

writing.

Some ideas for writing:

What animal eats from the coral?

What animals does the coral reef provide a safe

place or a hiding place for? How do these animals

hide?

How does the reef protect people?

Area of Learning: The Arts This week we are learning about shape and light by experimenting with the different shapes that

shadows create as the light changes. Grab a blank page and head outside into the sunshine, or use a

lamp indoors to shine some light onto your table. Place some toy figures, or small objects from around

your home, onto your page and turn them in different directions to see how their shadows change.

Trace around their shadows to create your very own shadow art.

If you're feeling very creative, you could trace your figures by setting them out in a scene, and draw your

own background for their shadows. You could also stick a few pages

together and draw around a family member's shadow; the

possibilities are endless! Here are a few examples of other

children hard at work to give you a little bit of inspiration!

Area of Learning: Physical Development & Movement

Warm Up: ‘TEN TEN TEN’ 10 Star Jumps 10 sprints from 1 area to another 10 Lie Down Get Ups

Activity: Ask your child to perform each animal walk (see sheet attached below) for 30 seconds with 30 seconds rest between each exercise. Repeat 3 times. Use this opportunity to develop language and communication skills, e.g. “What sound does a snake make?” Where does it live? What other animals live there? Does it like hot or cold weather? Does it like water? Cool Down: CAT STRETCH: Start on hands and knees, with a flat back. Take a deep breath in and arch back so that your belly is moving down towards the ground and shoulders move back so “cats” can look up. Exhale and reverse the curve in the back as the “cats” stretch their backs.

Create a box table or draw a picture table in your exercise book to represent both ‘ar’ and ‘or’. All of the pictures below contain either one of these Bossy ‘r’ sounds. Say the picture names, listen carefully and decide which sound you can hear. Then try to spell and write each word in the correct table column inside your exercise book. When you are finished you can add as many more words as you can think of. Good luck! J
