Writing-L.I. - To create interesting characters through description of appearance, behaviour and feelings.

Bringing a character to life

Last week we had some practice at the skills for describing a character. If you would like a reminder of the success criteria and some good examples to view for ideas, check the first two files below:

Carl is grumpy, tired and weary at the start of the story – but remember, a writer’s job is not to tell the reader that, but rather show them through the character’s appearance, movements, actions, facial expression and speech. Your task is to watch the clip of Carl below and, by telling us all about him and his actions here in this short scene, make the character come alive in a reader’s mind just through your words. Note that you do not need to use the entire scene – you may want to dig into some particular details. For example, you could really describe the sounds his back makes when he stretches to convey his age; you could really focus on the facial expression as he makes his trip down stairs and what this tells us about poor Carl as a person; you could note how particular he is about the arrangement of things in his home – what does this tell us about him? Watch the clip and make notes of the things you want to focus on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDP_yG7h07U

Spelling-L.I. - L.I- To identify and use common spelling patterns to accurately spell familiar words.

This week’s word list features the ‘our’ sound, in which the ou can sound like: u in up, oo in blue, ow in yellow. The list is in the following file:

Spelling 18.05.docx

Spelling list:

our

armour behaviour endeavour

colour flavour favourite

favour glamour courgette

honour harbour neighbour

odour humour tournament

labour concourse dishonourable

rumour journal encouragement

vapour journey nourishment

tour saviour courageous

discourse discouragement Choose 20 words from the list that you find reasonably challenging. Try to find other common elements of spelling rules within the words, such as double consonants and magic e. Check how many syllables and how many sounds there are in each word. For example: encouragement – has 4 syllables (en-cour-age-ment) and is made of 11 distinct sounds (e-n-c-ou-r-a-ge-m-e-n-t). It has ou making an ‘u’ sound and a ge that makes a soft ‘g’ sound. Practise your words as we normally would in class using your jotter. Once you have copied and practiced the lists, get someone at home to quiz you on your list. Word building – choose ten words and create extensions of these words using common prefixes and suffixes. Check this list with someone else to make sure it is accurate. For example: flavour becomes flavouring. If you have signed up for Sumdog you can complete spelling games there. Additionally, you can use Doorway speller online from the link below: https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/activities/speller/

Talking and Listening-L.I. - Using a wide variety of sources, create a presentation which is in your own words about the Kindertransport and the involvement of Sir Nicholas George Winton in the Kindertransport. Your task this week is to use the notes that you gathered in last weeks work to create a presentation about the Kindertransport and Sir Nicholas Winton. You need to think about how you structure it and please make sure the presentation is in your own words (remember, don’t copy chunks of text to use in your presentation). If you are going to use a power point -remember, don’t just read off it. Use it to convey information but add more detail about each slide from what you have learned. When thinking about the structure,

• use your 5 Ws – Who, What, Where, When, Why/how

• think about how you would structure a written factual report ( Introduction - when, what, where, why, who – briefly covered; Middle -expand/add detail on the 5 Ws, in particularly what happened and why; Conclusion -sum up what you have been talking about)

• it is logically organised – think about the date things happened within the topic you are covering.

• use notes – don’t read large chunks of text off paper

• use eye contact and facial expression

• talk clearly using a loud enough voice so people can hear and think about your pace and tone

• Put in enough detail so that the listener understands the subject you are talking about (it will probably be something they haven’t heard about before so educate them)

• remember it is a factual report – no opinions of your own Once you have completed it, practice it to make sure you are clear about what you are saying which will help your fluency. Finally, present it to your family. Remember to talk clearly, slowly and loud enough and use eye contact and facial expression. Hope they enjoy it!

Modern Languages-L.I. - To be able to give a short presentation/talk about your family in French. This week, we are going to use what you learned last week to create a short presentation in French about your family. You will then be presenting it to your family. Please remember, that you need to say/pronounce the words you are saying as accurately as possible. Task

1. Decide on the family members you are going to talk about. Draw a family tree showing them e.g.

grandparents, parents, brothers/sisters. You can include uncles/aunts and cousins if you wish.

2. Go through the following power point – it shows you how to structure your presentation. Pay

particular attention on how to say their names and take care with il and elle for male and female.

e.g. Voici ma petite soeur. Elle s’appelle Marie.

ma famille

3. Use this website to help with your pronounciation. https://www.french-games.net/frenchtopics Go to intermediate then Family and Family Members.

4. Finally, present it to your family.

Health and Wellbeing-L.I. - To recognise change as a constant in our lives and consider how we plan for and react to it.

Last week, you were asked to think about change in your life and, in particular, to think of advice that might be good for someone about to make the change to a new school as part of transitioning to high school. This week, you will be asked to share some of your ideas in the Collaboration Space of the Class Notebook on Teams. This can be found when you open Teams and click on the Class Notebook tab at the top of the Teams feed. Once you are in the Class Notebook, you can find the Collaboration Space on the list of pages within the Class Notebook – look for a pop-out menu on the left side to find these options ( it is a small arrow to the left of the Welcome to Class Notebook message). You will be adding information for two purposes:

1. We would like you to share your ideas on coping with change and transition into the page named Transition Advice. This should be based on your ideas from the previous week

2. We would like you to put up to two (at most) questions you would like to ask about transition into the page named Transition Questions. These questions will be passed onto current S1 pupils (not teachers) to answer for you. When writing your questions, check other people’s posts first to see if someone else has already asked your question. If you see that all questions you can think of have been asked, do not add any more. We cannot give answers about the Covid-19 situation; the aim is to think about questions about high school life in normal circumstances.

We really hope that this can be an enjoyable way of sharing ideas as a class and working together to address your questions and share your ideas. To make sure it is a positive experience, please make sure you follow the guidance below:

• The Collaboration Space is workspace, not a social media wall – treat it as though you are writing on the board in class after being asked to share an idea with everyone by the teacher

• Please only post text – no images, emojis or other media are needed for this task

• Be very careful not to interfere with or change something another pupil has added – it is a live workspace, so we need to be careful.

• Be aware that you may not be asked to join similar tasks in future if you cannot contribute as we have asked in these points. Any posts not following the guidance will be removed and the pupil adding it may be removed from the group.

We hope that we can use this to have a more interactive experience around some important talking points for us as a class and are really looking forward to seeing your ideas and questions. We will leave the Collaboration Space open from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd for you to share your contributions.

Social Studies-L.I. - To understand how and why America became involved in WW2, joining Britain and its allies and understand what Japan’s ambitions were in WW2 which resulted in America joining the war. Prior to 1941, America had not been involved in WW2, however, an event in December of that year changed all of that. In the following tasks, you are going to gain an understanding of Japan’s involvement in WW2 and the event that resulted in America becoming involved in WW2 when they declaring war on Japan. Task 1 Read/go through the following power point. It explains the reasons for Japan’s involvement in WW2 and its pact with Germany and Italy.

Japan in WW2.pptx

Task 2 This task is to enable you to understand and learn about the attack on Pearl Harbor (American spelling of harbour) by the Japanese. This attack resulted in America joining WW2 in December, 1941, and building an alliance with Britain and its allies against the Axis Group of Germany/Italy/Japan who were in alliance with each other. Complete the following comprehension task. Choose your own star level.

Expressive Art (Drama/Music/Art)-L.I

Following on from last week’s lesson A Night in The Blitz, the types of planes used to carry out bombing and a famous squadron have pieces of music titled after them. Music to listen to: 633 Squadron by Ron Goodwin https:youtu.be/XWXQUhBsUVM 1. Listen to the music and try to imagine what some of the musical features are representing / implying. 2. This is descriptive music; it paints a picture in sound. Music which does this is often referred to as Programme Music. 3. One section of the orchestra features very noticeably in this composition. Can you spot which one it is? 4. Try, when listening, to focus on: Dynamics: use of louds and quiets, getting louder or quieter Orchestration: instruments used, featured Tonality: happy / sad, changes key? Techniques: styles, form of playing Melodic features: what things take place in the melody / tune, what does it do? 5.To help you, here are some concepts to listen out for. Legato / staccato Major / minor Ascending / Descending Crescendo / Diminuendo Repetition Trills Trumpets, Trombones, Cymbals pp, ff Triplets Arco / Pizzicato Accents 6. Use the list of words in point.5 ( above ) and see if you can write their definition. Try to find out the meaning of any words that you may have forgotten. Can you remember the sign/symbol for some of these words.eg, accent, cresc, dim ?

Something Fun

Something Fun

1. You could design your own propaganda poster for WW2. You can get some ideas about what the

poster should be about by looking at the following –

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-t-3948-word-war-two-design-your-own-propaganda-poster-task-setter-powerpoint https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-t-5635-word-war-two-propaganda-posters

2. Why not enter this art competition?

3. Learn a little bit about Japanese culture. At this time of year, they have a spring celebration called

the Hanami Festival (cherry blossom festival). It is very important to the Japanese people and they

go to see the cherry blossom trees when they are in bloom and have picnics and food whilst they

admire the blossom.

Watch this video to see what it is like – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3N5yVJHWs0 You could paint a picture of the cherry blossom in a Japanese style using the following - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HE3EAwk_qE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0jPTEUvraM

A Message from my Teacher Kon’nichiwa everyone. That’s Japanese for hello.

4500 × 3003 Cherry blossom in Japan.

Hope you all had a good weekend and enjoyed your holiday on Monday. As you will have noticed, we are moving to a different Learning Grid layout. We are hoping this will help you follow instructions and locate information more easily. All the same sections are still there just in a different layout. Another thing that has changed is how we share documents/PowerPoints etc. The 3 ways we are providing your resources for learning are as follows:

1. Sharing them as links to websites as we have been doing – this is often a long process but we know

it works, so we are continuing to do so.

2. In the Learning Grid, icons have been used for documents/PowerPoint etc. and are located beside

the work they are to be used with. Click in the icon to access them. If it is a PowerPoint you may

want to right click to choose Open.

3. You will also now be able to locate them in the Files section in Teams.

How to do this –

• click on Files at the top of the Teams page,

• look for the folder dated for the Monday of the current week (this week’s will be 18th

May)

• open it

• all the documents, power points etc needed for the week will be in there and will be

named for the activity they go with

Have a good week, keep working hard and remember to get out for some exercise and fresh air as often as you can. Any issues, contact us using the addresses below – [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]
