Day 1Capturing the interest of you reader.

Book covers are very important. They tell us what the book is about and are often the reason we choose to read a book.

Here are some previous covers of The Iron Man. What do they have in common?

A book cover will include the author’s name, the title of the book and an illustration.You are going to create a new book cover for The Iron Man. Your cover must be eye catching and make me want to read the story.Here are some points to consider when designing your book cover;

What is the book about? Who are the main characters? What would make you want to read the book? What colours will you choose? Are they realistic choices?

Compare a story book with a film version.

We have read the book The Iron Man, which was written by Ted Hughes in 1968 and we have watched the film The Iron Giant, which was filmed in 1999. You all pointed out that they were very different. We have already written about the book during our English lessons.So now, you are going to write about the film.In your book, re-tell the story from the film.Don’t forget to;

Use your neatest handwriting. Use paragraphs. Use capital letters where they are needed (names, places and at the

start of a sentence). Write your story in chronological order (the order things happened

in the film). Describe the characters and the setting.

Day 5Letter of apology.

In Chapter 3, Hogarth regrets trapping the Iron man in the pit.He says, “we’re sorry we trapped you and buried you… we promise we’ll not deceive you again. Follow us and you can have all the metal you want.”Imagine you are Hogarth and you are feeling very guilty about trapping the Iron Man. Write a letter to express how you feel. Remember to explain why you believe you need to say sorry and how you intend to make things better for the Iron Man.Below is an example of how to write a letter. Use this to set out your letter in your book. (Perhaps you should say goodbye by writing Yours sincerely.)

*** Don’t forget to use this as an opportunity to practise your handwriting ***
