The Elements of Art When artists create pieces of work they use different elements of art to help them communicate. The most common elements are; line, texture, colour, shape, form, space and value. I would like you to go on a Texture Treasure Hunt to create a piece of art. All you need to do it is a piece of A4 paper and a pencil, although if you have coloured pencils or wax crayons that would be even better. Firstly, you fold the paper in half, in half and in half again and unfold it so you have 8 rectangles to collect 8 different textures. Then look around and collect your textures or do them where they are. You can use objects and surfaces in or around your house - a brick in a wall, a coin, an interesting piece of wood, a kitchen utensil, the bottom of your trainers! Anything that you find interesting. How to do it – Hold the paper down firmly over the surface you want to use then holding the pencil or crayon on its side, rub over the paper gently to pick up the texture underneath. You can fit one in each of the rectangles on your paper to build up your picture. Afterwards you could even cut or tear the different textures up to create a collage of something else.

You can fit one in each of the rectangles on your paper to build up your picture.Afterwards you could even cut or tear the different textures up to create a collage of something else. You could add real objects too to add interest. Here are some examples.

8 different textures in colour

Pictures using the textures to make another picture by cutting them out

Using differently textured objects to make a collage

You could even do a rubbing of this kind of thing too.
