Learning Ideas for week 25/05/20
Literacy
Attention and Listening
Aim – to attract and maintain attention on an object or activity and to be able to follow the instructions stop and wait/go
Bubble Snake
Make this bubble snake, all you need it an empty water bottle, a sock, washing-up liquid, water and a bowl or small container. Here is a video of how to complete the activity - https://www.mottchildren.org/posts/camp-little-victors/bubble-snakes
The aim of this activity is to attract and keep your child’s attention on an object Development – add it turn taking. Once you have created a few bubble snakes, allow
your child to try. Take turns making bubble snakes.
Stop, Wait, Go
Use the stop and wait symbol during different activities, when giving instructions. To help with this encourage your child to place their hands on their knees
Play games in which your child must stop when given a signal and then go when given another signal i.e. musical statutes
Dance to the music, when the music stops and you show the stop and wait symbol, encourage your child to stay still, then when the music starts, show the go symbol and encourage your child to start dancing again
Here are a few songs to dance to which tell you when to freeze https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UcZWXvgMZEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGoaNx2BqJs
Additionally, here are the new topic songs to listen and dance to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFxAiWkSePk&list=PL-D4Un3CQx-mkqFTeo1pAt1pR3QxuOm1v
Word Level Activities
Aim – to follow 1/2 - word level instructions and develop understanding of key vocabulary
Continue to work on word level activities – remember if you’re not sure what level your child is working on, check with their latest report and IEP.
One-word level – there is only one information word i.e. spoon, boy, hat ‘Give me the hat.’ (Holding out your hand) Have a range of items in front of you and
your child, items that your child would be familiar with and know the vocabulary of Two-word level – there are two information words needing to be understood ‘Give the girl the hat’
I have uploaded a great resource developed by Speech and Language Therapists. It has a range of different activities you can do to practice word level work.
Writing/Fine Motor Skills
Using a paint brush and a small tray of rice (blue rice if you can dye it using paint) practice writing the letters from your name. You can help your child as much as they need
Phonological Awareness
Steady Beat (using a prop). Like last week choose a different nursery rhyme encourage your child to copy your steady beat as you wave a scarf or ribbon.
Here is the link to the BBC website again with different nursery rhymes https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-a-to-z-index/z4ddgwx
To further develop name recognition, you could put the letters from their name (using magnetic letters/letter puzzle pieces/printed letters laminated) in a basin of water and get them to ‘fish’ for one letter at a time
Use a sieve, wooden spoon or tongs to collect the letters from the water
Write their name out and then using either stickers or a cotton bud and paint, trace the letters.
Hand-eye coordination is an important skill to develop – try this suspended ball activity - https://www.ot-mom-learning-activities.com/hand-eye-coordination.html
Numeracy
Number
Aim – to count a variety of objects and to match numerals to a set
Use the numerals cards previously uploaded – count out different sets of items such as toys, cups, pencils, bowls, forks etc and then encourage your child to choose and match the correct numeral to the set
Support – begin with providing your child with two numerals to choose from Development – if your child is able to identify the correct numeral consecutively,
increase the number of numerals they have to chose from Work with the numbers your child has been working from i.e. numbers 1-5 or 1-10
Shape
Introduce the 2D shape semi-circle. One way you could do this is to make a jellyfish using half a paper plate
Throughout the week keep a look out for different everyday items that are semi-circle in shape
Sequence
Aim – to be able to sequence 2/ 3 familiar events
On one set of Duplo blocks write numerals, on the other draw the corresponding dots – encourage your child to match the numeral block to the block with the corresponding number of dots
Alternatively, make a tower of different number blocks, match the numeral block to the corresponding tower
Stick a numeral (can be a magnetic numeral, or simply the printable numeral cards) to a piece of play dough. Encourage your child to count out the corresponding number of sticks to stick into the playdough. The sticks could be pieces of spaghetti, pipe cleaners, beads etc.
This week make a sandwich with your child I have uploaded sequencing resources that you can use to teach this activity step by
step I have also uploaded other sequencing activities that you can print and make use of
Capacity
Aim – to compare two objects and start to become familiar with language of comparison i.e. more/less
Continue to explore containers filled with water, which one has more and which one has less? – count the number of cups in a jug, the number of ladles in a cup, similar to the activity we completed last week
Begin to talk about if a cup is full or empty These activities can be completed at any time during the day i.e. at bath time or
when doing the dishes or during water play
Structured Play/ Topic
- Sea Creatures - Create your own ocean: using only your hand print how many sea creatures can you make? Here is some inspiration…
- Under the sea sensory bin – fill a plastic container half with blue jelly and half with desiccated coconut dyed with yellow food colouring (normal sand also works), pop in some sea creatures and have fun!
- Additionally, an alternative sensory bin/water try idea is to simply fill the container with water, place some sand and shells at the bottom and pop in some sea creatures
- Rainbow Fish – Read the story of the rainbow fish together (found in other activities) and then create your own rainbow fish using celery and the uploaded fish outline
Other
PDMU
Explore their responsibilities for self and others
Continue to make use of Take Ten if you found it helpful and useful to regulate your child last week.
For the next three weeks try and encourage your child to take on one new responsibility that they will work on throughout the week. This could be something as simple as putting their shoes in a particular place when they take them off.
o Helping load washing machineo Chopping food (child knife and banana) o Hooveringo Feeding the family animal o Wash plastic dishes at the sink
Story
The Rainbow Fish is a great story and from it we can learn about sharing. Watch and listen to the story, looking at the wonderful colours of rainbow fish’s scales. Sit back and relax for a few moments as someone else reads the story for you! 😊 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9mryuEKkKc
This week I also came across this lovely story, made recently to help kids think of others ways to show others they care, other than giving hugs. It suggests different things kids can do to stay connected to their friends and family. Why not have a listen to it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PnnFrPaRgY&fbclid=IwAR1KSSNH3UF3_ff_hE82YIYgnBHhxtpQWxpJPrqLlF7fXw9WchuIWvRcuOI&app=desktopI have also uploaded it to the website page.
Each week I upload a range of learning activities which can be completed at home, but please remember these are all suggested activities and no one is expected to completed them all. Please select the activities which best suit you and your child as well as the resources you have to hand at home. Thank you for your continued support and all the work you are doing with your child! This week was Mental Health Awareness week, which is even more important at the moment. So please look after yourself and your child and do what is right for you.
Whatever you get up to this bank holiday weekend, enjoy! Maybe you are even getting to see some family at a distance in the garden!
