A cyclone hit Myanmar recently, claiminghuman lives and property in some areas inAyeyawady and Yangon divisions.Rehabilitation works are now being carriedout with added momentum under theleadership of the government and with theassistance of internal and internationalorganizations in the storm-affected areas.

In addition, plans are under way to providehouses and food to the victims who haveresettled, to enable them to resume theirbusinesses and livelihoods, and to scale uphealth care in those areas.

At the invitation of the government,medical teams from India, China, Thailand,Laos, Bangladesh and Singapore have arrivedin Myanmar to provide health care.

The teams from the six countries are takingdisease control measures and giving treatmentwith heart and soul to the victims in Pyapon,Bogale, Kungyangon, Myaungmya, Labutta,Kyauktan and Maubin.

At the same time, medical staff from theMinistry of Health and the Ministry ofDefence, medical experts from NGOs, medicalteams from private enterprises, individualmedical experts, and members of Red Cross,Fire Brigades, and other medicalorganizations totaling more than 30,000 havebeen engaged in the relief and rehabilitationworks in the storm-affected areas.

Thanks to the continuous supply ofmedicines and relief aid donated byinternational community and the donors athome and abroad, and works being carriedout in collaboration by the governments ofthe countries and the people, health careservices will be able to be carried out on awider scale.

US airstrike kills eightIraqis in north of Baghdad TIKRIT (Iraq), 23 May — An overnight US airstrike hit a village in Iraq’s

Salahudin Province, killing eight people, a provincial police source said onThursday.

The incident occurred when US troops conducted a search operation late onWednesday in the Mazra’a Village near town Beiji, some 200 kilometres north ofBaghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

During the operation, a group of people observed trying to flee the village in avehicle, prompting a US aircraft to fire a missile on their vehicle, destroying thevehicle and killing all the people aboard, the source said.

Earlier on Wednesday, US ground forces detained seven suspected insurgentsand destroyed two of their cars in central Beiji Town, according to the source.

Summary of observations recorded at 9:30 hoursMST: During the past 24 hours, rain or thundershowershave been widespread in Taninthayi Division, fairlywidespread in Kachin State and Upper Sagaing Division,scattered in Mon State and Mandalay Division, isolatedShan, Chin, Kayin and Kayah States and weather hasbeen partly cloudy in the remaining areas. Day tempera-tures were (3°C) to (4°C) above May average tempera-tures in Sagaing, Mandalay, Ayeyawardy and TanngthayiDivisions and about May average temperatures in theremaining States and Divisions. The significant day tem-peratures was Chauk (41°C). The noteworthy amounts ofrainfall recorded were Dawei (1.26) inches, Yamethin(1.06) inches, Mindat (0.59) inch, Kalay (0.55) inch andThaton (0.51) inch.

Maximum temperature on 23-5-2008 was 90ºF. Mini-mum temperature on 24-5-2008 was 75ºF. Relative hu-midity at (09:30) hours MST on 24-5-2008 was 88%. Totalsunshine hours on 23-5-2008 was (1.4) hours approx.

Rainfall on 24-5-2008 was (Nil) at Mingaladon, atKaba-Aye and at Central Yangon. Total rainfall since1-1-2008 was (27.76) inches at Mingaladon, (32.01) inchesat Kaba-Aye and (36.89) inches at Central Yangon.

Maximum windspeed at Yangon (Kaba-Aye) was (5) mphfrom Southeast at (03:30) hours MST on 23-5-2008.

Bay inference: Weather is partly cloudy in the NorthBay and monsoon is strong in the Andaman Sea and else-where in the Bay of Bengal.

Prime Minister oversees universities under repair

NAY PYI TAW, 24 May — Accompanied by Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence and Chair-man of Yangon Division Peace and DevelopmentCouncil Commander of Yangon Command Maj-GenHla Htay Win, Prime Minister General Thein Seinvisited Yangon University of Computer Studies at1.30 pm today.

Minister for Science and Technology U Thaungreported to the Prime Minister and party on damage tothe roofs and windows of lecture halls; Rector Dr DawNilar Thein and Chief Engineer of Max Myanmar USoe Hlaing on damage to the lecture halls and repairwork. The Prime Minister saw to the availability ofconstruction materials and repair work and fulfilledthe requirements.

Next, the Prime Minister and party went toYangon (West)� Technological University where Rec-tor Dr Zaw Min Aung reported on damage to thelecture halls, efforts made to repair the halls before theexams and 90 percent completion of repair work.

Afterwards, Prime Minister General Thein Seininspected the workshops of departments concerned.Minister U Thaung and the rector conducted the PrimeMinister around the workshops.

On arrival at Yangon University, the PrimeMinister was briefed by Minister for EducationDr Chan Nyein, Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt and

officials on fallen age-old trees on the campus anddamage to the roofs of lecture halls. The Prime Ministerviewed the fallen trees and damaged roofs. They also

reported on condition of tiles of the Science building andthe convocation hall of Yangon University.
