1 IntroductionThe demand for storage capacity that is capable of scalable growth and theincreasing trend towards rack-based servers have generated a need for corre-spondingly compact and powerful backup systems with a correspondinglyserious approach to data security.

The PRIMERGY S10 storage subsystem provides a flexible means of consoli-dating rack-based data security. The PRIMERGY S10 makes it possible toinstall present-day backup units (such as, for example, DLT 7000, DDS3,DDS4, Autoloader, etc.) in a separate 19” cabinet and provides two 3.2”-high orfour 1.6”-high slots for this purpose. The subsystem is also prepared to accom-modate future back up units.

The subsystem offers a simple, flexible and low-priced solution for avoidingbackup constraints and facilitating expansion.

The PRIMERGY S10 can be connected via onboard controllers or Adaptec2940 U2W. The storage subsytem has been equipped with an LVD interfacemodule.

The LVD interface module accommodates the control and display elements andthe logic for controlling the power supply and monitoring the fan. It also estab-lishes a connection between the external and internal cabling. All the necessaryconnectors for the internal cabling are located on this module (socket for thepower supply, for the fan connector, and for the internal SCSI line), as well asthe socket for the external SCSI output (see also section “Connecting thestorage subsystem” on page 20). An LVD/SE SCSI terminator is integrated inthe interface and is automatically activated on the last subsystem in the string ifno SCSI connection to another storage subsystem exists (no daisy-chain).

Up to two PRIMERGY S10 can be connected to a SCSI string.

The storage subsystem is cooled by a fan. The fan is monitored to make sure itdoes not fall below the nominal speed. If the “Local/Remote” switch is set to“Remote“, the storage subsystem is switched off in the event of an error, or thesystem is prevented from being switched on again, as appropriate (see alsochapter “Troubleshooting” on page 25).

The PRIMERGY S10 storage subsystem possesses an integrated powersupply unit.

The PRIMERGY S10 occupies three height units (3 HU) in the 19” rack.

Troubleshooting SCSI devices are not detected

5.3 SCSI devices are not detected

If the storage subsystem is switched on late (e.g. by plugging in the power cord),it may mean that the SCSI devices are not detected when the system is booted.

Ê Check the connection to the power supply.

Ê Switch the system off and on again.

5.4 Incorrect SCSI ID

The backup unit does not respond with the SCSI ID noted on the label (on theback panel of the storage subsystem), or there is an address conflict on theSCSI bus:

Ê Check the address jumpers of the backup unit involved. Refer to thedocumentation for the backup unit for help.

The address jumpers of most of the backup units are located on the back ofthe device.

Ê Open the storage subsystem housing (see section “Opening the storagesubsystem housing” on page 25) and set the SCSI ID (see section “Settingthe SCSI ID” on page 20).

5.5 Fan failure

The storage subsystem is cooled by means of a fan. The fan is monitored tomake sure it does not fall below the nominal speed. If the “Local/Remote” switchis set to “Remote“ and an error occurs, the storage subsytem is switched off orprevented from being switched on, as appropriate.

Ê Check that the ventilation slots are not covered.

Ê Disconnect the storage subsystem from the power supply for at least 30second (disconnect the power cord) and then reconnect it.

If the error occurs again, contact your service partner.
