Dear Friend of Primetimers,
We bring you greetings from the Primetimers program of the General Board of Global Ministries. This program offers educational and mission service opportunities for older adults throughout The United Methodist Church.
We are excited to share with you the 2013 Primetimers events listing. Each of the four events offers an opportunity to discover and be part of the many ways United Methodists are in mission across the United States and around the world. During this upcoming year the theme “Foundations of Faith” will be the underlying focus as we think about “Relationships” in Jamaica, “Poverty” in rural Kentucky, “Peace” as we go to Costa Rica, and finally, “Our own Hearts and Spirituality” while we’re in beautiful Iona and Glasgow, Scotland.
To register for a Primetimers event, please send a completed registration form with $100 deposit to the Mission Volunteers Office. You are encouraged to register early as some events are filled before their registration deadline. Registrations will be filled in order of postmarks.

WORLD BEAT CONNECTION JAMAICA

February 12–18, 2013
“BIND US TOGETHER”
Reverends Lyndy and Judy Zabel of Minnesota have once again invited Primetimers to join their World Beat Connection jazz musicians for a concert tour in Jamaica. More than 10 different venues will bring together voices and instruments, making beautiful music in and around the Browns Town and Stewart Town Circuits of the MCCA in Northern Jamaica. Primetimer musicians are invited to join World Beat Connection musicians and local instrumentalists from Jamaica. No cultural boundaries exist when God’s love is celebrated with music. Valentine’s Day at the Browns Town Church will be a highlight celebration of love of neighbor and God.
Music selections will be mailed to participants prior to the event, and must be memorized! The ability to read music and sing “in tune” are helpful—the ability to enjoy a cross-cultural musical celebration of singing with gospel music and dancing is required.
A time away from rehearsals and concerts will be provided at the beach in Ocho Rios, so swimsuits and sunscreen are appropriate. Please remember that a passport is required for entry into Jamaica.
World Beat Connection is an Advance Special of the Minnesota Annual Conference. Their mission is the promotion of cross-cultural awareness, bridge building, interfaith dialogue, and peacemaking through musical tours. When the joy of God’s love is shared through music, as it will be at World Beat Connection, that love is magnified and multiplied without limit.

Rooms:Hillcrest Diocesan Retreat Center—there are a variety of room options.
Meals:The first meal will be dinner on Tuesday, February 12th, and the final meal will be breakfast on Monday, February 18th.
Transportation:Participants should not make travel arrangements until advised by Lyndy and Judy Zabel. In-country travel and to and from the airport and the retreat center is provided by the host site. The airport of choice is Montego Bay.
Estimated Physical Demands:Participants should be able to get on/off bus or van with little or no assistance. There will be a small amount of walking each day.

THE SWITZERLAND OF LATIN AMERICA
May 4 –15, 2013
COSTA RICA: A HISTORY OF PEACE IN THE RAINFOREST
Primetimers in Costa Rica will experience a time of spiritual renewal and education. Participants will visit indigenous ruins and organic coffee and banana plantations. The overnight excursion to a nearby rainforest filled with tropical flora and fauna will excite bird watchers.
Service components of the event will be twofold. There will be an opportunity to work doing light construction at the university. On Sunday morning there is time for Bible school and creative arts with local children who are immigrants.
Visits and presentations will provide information about local government policies. The former Costa Rican ambassador to Holland, who is now working in Human Rights internationally, will be a featured guest and one of the speakers.
Becky Harrell is a Global Ministries missionary who is assigned to Latin American Bible University, and will be the on-site leader of this Primetimers event. Becky will accompany the group during the entire 10-day experience. Housing and meals will be on the seminary grounds. Some of the students, as well as faculty members, will make presentations.
The main theme and emphasis for this experience is “Peace in the Rainforest.” Costa Rica is a country at peace with no military since 1949. Primetimers will explore the interesting history of the indigenous people and the story of peace in the midst of civil war. Former President of Costa Rica Arias Sanchez is a past recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Immigration and the Church in Costa Rica will also be discussed.

Event Date:May 4–15, 2013
Cost Per Person:$950 includes housing, meals, local transportation, supplemental accident insurance, entrance fees, and Global Ministries’ administrative fee. Participants are responsible for the cost of their transportation to and from the event.
Rooms:Primetimers will be housed in UBL with a choice of single, double, or triple rooms with shared bath. When the group is traveling, rooms will be double occupancy when possible.
Meals:The first meal will be dinner on Saturday, May 4th and the last meal provided will be breakfast on Wednesday, May 15th.
Transportation:Participants should not make travel plans until so advised by Becky Harrell. All should arrive at the Juan Santamaria International Airport, San Jose, Costa Rica between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4th and should plan to leave between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15th. Transportation to and from the airport will be provided by the hosts.
Estimated Physical Demands:Entry to UBL is a steep but walkable hill with steps provided on the side of the drive. All activities are on the ground floor of the university and an elevator is provided. Passenger buses are used for all transportation, but climbing into and out of the bus is necessary. Some terrain will be rough and perhaps muddy. No more than one hour of walking per day is expected.

HENDERSON SETTLEMENTFrakes, Kentucky
April 28–May 4, 2013
A CYCLE OF POVERTY
Since 1925 poverty and Methodists have been in an active relationship near Frakes, Kentucky. The history of Henderson Settlement is a combination of the struggle of rural poverty and the incredible element of faith. The beginning and continuing ministry of the Settlement will be the topic of study by Primetimers who attend the event in the spring of 2013.
The visitors will stay in the Settlement House near Frakes. This is located in northeastern Kentucky, in the area known as Appalachia. It is well known for its beauty and also for the poverty which has pervaded this part of the United States for many years. The focus of the week will be the mission and ministry that confronts the settlement’s “Cycle of Poverty.”
Participants will visit the Museum of Appalachia and attend a worship service at Fonde Church of God. Service opportunities for Primetimers include home repair services for seniors, working in the baby thrift store, and other campus projects. Sturdy clothes and work shoes are recommended.
Poverty manifests itself in many ways. Presentations about poverty in general, hunger, and spiritual poverty will be brought, as well as a poverty simulation. There will be an Appalachian historian accompanying and in dialogue with the group.
Many writers have written stories from this area, and it is recommended that time be taken to prepare with some of these readings. Suggested authors are Ruby Payne, Robert Lupton, and Ted Campbell.

Rooms:There are both double and single rooms available with shared bathrooms.
Meals:The first meal served will be dinner/supper on Sunday, April 28th and the final meal will be breakfast on Saturday, May 4th.
Transportation:Primetimers should plan to arrive at the event between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28th. Flights should arrive no later than 3:00 p.m. Primetimers should plan to depart from the event site between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 4th. Flights should be no later than 12:00 noon on May 4th. Recommended airports are: 1) Knoxville, Tenessee (82 miles) or 2) Lexington, Kentucky (137 miles). Please do not make travel arrangements until so advised by Vickie Stephenson.
Estimated Physical Demands:There will be 30 to 120 minutes of walking per day. Some terrain is mountainous. There will be one to two flights of stairs per day. Primetimers must be able to enter and exit bus/van with little assistance.

ENCOURAGING THE HEART AND SOUL
Iona and Glasgow, ScotlandAugust 30–September 10, 2013
A time of personal and spiritual adventure awaits the ones who participate in this Primetimers event with Rev. Larry Norman, event leader. Larry is returning as a group leader to this place he knows and loves. We will be attending an “open week” at the Abbey and Mac Center.
Primetimers will participate in the usual events of an Iona week: two worship services each day at the Abbey, optional workshops, a trip to the Isle of Staffa to see Finigan’s Cave and the puffins, and the pilgrimage hike around the island with the rest of the pilgrims on Wednesday. Special workshops will center around the work of The Right Reverend George MacLeod, who began the Iona Community in the ruins of Columba’s Abbey.
Guests will stay in the Mac Center, which is named for MacLeod. (There are required readings for this part of the event.) There will be plenty of time for personal reflection, walks on the beach, and soulful rest. The week will be interesting and exciting, but also a time to spend with God and the deeper business of heart and faith.
The group will spend time in Glasgow, touring the architectural work of Rennie MacIntosh, the most important architect of Scotland and perhaps the inspiration of our own Frank Lloyd Wright. While in Glasgow, participants stay in a MacIntosh-designed hotel and will take a tour of many MacIntosh-designed buildings.
Spaces are limited for this Primetimers event, so applications and deposits should be sent as soon as possible. They will be honored by first postmarks received.

Participants are responsible for the cost of their transportation to and from the event.
Rooms:Shared-room occupancy in Mac Center at Iona and double occupancy in a hotel in Glasgow. Shared baths in Mac Center at Iona.
Meals:All meals are arranged for the group by the event leadership. Meals in Glasgow are not included in the cost, but will be taken as a group.
Transportation:Participants are to meet by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30th for group orientation and will travel by train the next morning from Queen’s Street Station (Glasgow). There will also be bus transportation during the event. Flight arrangements to Scotland should not be made until advised by Larry Norman.
Estimated Physical Demands:Participants must be able to get on/off the train and bus, and to walk one hour or more each day on uneven terrain. This event is more strenuous than the traditional Primetimers offering.

IMPORTANT: Flight or other travel commitments should not be made until you have received a confirmation from the host site. Participants will be notified of the status of the event 1-2 weeks after the registration deadline.
Cancellation Policy:Participants may cancel their registration up to the registration deadline for an event and receive a full refund only if there is a waiting list and another participant is available. The fee will not be returned for cancellations after the registration deadline.
In case of low registration, Primetimers reserves the right to cancel an event up to the registration deadline. All deposited monies will be returned under such conditions.
