ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATION

GENERAL

1.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

A. Work shall be in accordance with the latest editions of the National Electrical Code, State,

and local authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Material shall be new and have the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label, or be listed by UL

for the intended use.

C. Pay for all required permits and inspection fees.

D. Submit shop drawings and samples where specifically requested, as4built drawings and

Operation and Maintenance Manual.

1.02 SCOPE:

A. Interior Work

1. Provide complete electrical systems for the following:

a. Lighting and power distribution.

b. Lighting Fixtures and control.

c. Convenience and special receptacles.

d. Empty raceway systems for Telephone and Data.

e. Wiring to Plumbing, Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning equipment.

C. Submittals

1. Include complete materials list of all items proposed to be furnished and installed.

2. Manufacturer's equipment specifications and other data required to demonstrate

compliance with the specified requirements.

1.03 PRODUCTS:

A. Conduit:

1. Provide new conduit and deliver to the site in standard lengths.

2. Galvanized Rigid Steel Conduit and Couplings: Hot4dipped galvanized or sherardized

inside and out, with galvanized threads. Provide insulated throat metallic bushings.

3. Electric Metallic Steel Tubing: Hot4dipped galvanized or sherardized on exterior

surface. Provide wrench compression type couplings and insulated throat

compression connectors.

4. Flexible Conduit: Manufactured from single strip steel, hot4dipped galvanized. Provide

insulated die4cast connectors with ridges that thread into the inside of the conduit to

ensure a force fit, as manufactured by D&H Electric Company or equal. Binding4screw

type connectors are not acceptable.

5. Liquidtight Flexible Conduit: Identical to flexible steel conduit but with overall polyvinyl

chloride plastic jacket. Provide insulating connectors, Appleton STN Series, or equal.

All liquidtight flexible conduit shall include in its construction a bonding conductor,

sized to NEC requirements, per its sized load.

6. Polyvinyl Chloride plastic conduit: PVC Schedule 40, with slip fittings and connectors.

7. Underground 4 PVC.

8. Underground elbows 4 GRS

9. Above ground 4 EMT.

B. Wire and Cable:

1. All wire and cable for lighting and power systems shall be soft4drawn annealed copper

with 98 percent conductivity, 6004volt insulation, unless otherwise noted. Aluminum

wire and cable will not be permitted unless approved by engineer in advance.

2. All wire and cable shall be new and manufactured not more than 12 months prior to

installation. Each coil or reel shall bear the UL label and shall be marked with AWG or

circular wire size, voltage rating, insulation type, type of stranding, (and shielding,

where applicable), manufacturer's name, trade name, month and year when

manufactured. Wire shall be marked continuously with insulation type, wire size and

voltage rating.

3. Minimum wire size used shall be #12 AWG, except control circuits may be #14 AWG.

4. Conductors for all auxiliary and communication systems shall be as indicated or as

recommended by the system equipment manufacturer.

5. Conductors No. 10 AWG and smaller shall be solid; No. 8 and larger shall be stranded.

6. Insulation shall be type THHN/THWN or XHHW, to suit installed condition per National

Electrical Code. Use type XHHW for service conductors, use type THHN/THWN for

other conductors.

7. Conductors installed in areas subjected to temperatures exceeding 60°C (140°F);

terminating in incandescent lighting fixtures and installed through or into housing

containing ballasts shall be type AVA.

8. For all sizes, conductors with mineral filled cross4linked thermosetting polyethylene

insulation, UL4type XHHW rated 75°C (167°F) in wet or dry locations may be used.

C. Outlet Boxes:

1. Provide all boxes necessary for proper installation of electrical work in compliance with

codes and regulations. Each box shall have the volume required by the National

Electrical Code for the number of conductors enclosed in the box.

2. Provide 14piece galvanized pressed steel knockout type boxes, minimum sized 4"

square by 141/2" deep, in all wall and ceiling

locations unless otherwise indicated or required.

3. Cast ferrous or aluminum boxes and fittings shall be of the threaded hub type with

integral end4stop when located in exterior or normally wet locations.

D. Pull Boxes:

1. Where pull boxes are indicated or required on walls, in ceilings and in dry locations,

provide boxes constructed of code4gage sheet steel finished with one coat of metal

primer and one coat of primer sealer.

2. Ceiling pull boxes shall be recessed or concealed unless otherwise noted. In finished

areas, paint exposed surfaces to match ceiling or wall decor.

E. Wiring Devices:

1. General: Wiring devices shall be of the molded composition type, specification grade,

rated at 125 volts, unless otherwise noted or specified. All devices shall be flush

mounted unless otherwise noted and with finish matching device plates. Local

switches shall have alternating current ratings equal to full nominal capacity whenever

handling tungsten filament or inductive loads. Switches for 120 volt circuits shall be

rated 20 amperes and of the quiet action type. All key type switches shall be keyed

identically. Receptacles shall be of the NEMA Standard configuration for each

application, using a horseshoe shaped grounding pole. Color of devices and plates

shall be as selected by Architect.

2. Receptacles: Provide types in accordance with NEMA Standard configuration as

shown and hereinafter specified.

a. Duplex receptacles for 1204volt, single4phase service shall be specification grade,

rated 20 amperes, 125 volt, back or side wired, urea4molded. Receptacles shall

be Hubbell No. BR20.

b. Double duplex (quadruplex) receptacles for 1204volt, single phase service to be

same as duplex receptacles with two duplex receptacles installed in one 4" x 4"

outlet box with one 24gang faceplate.

c. Single receptacles for 1204volt, 204ampere, 34wire service shall be similar to

duplex receptacles, Hubbell No. 1877.

d. Receptacles identified as "GFI" or “GF” shall be ground fault interrupter type, 20

amperes, 120 volt, Hubbell No. GF20.

3. Toggle Switches: Single pole, 34way and 44way.

a. 120 or 277 volt lighting switches shall be rated 20 amperes, 120/277 volts, A.C.,

Hubbell No. CSB120.

F. Device Plates:

1. Provide plates for all outlet boxes and fittings of all systems except at outlets where

fixture canopies are used.

3. Provide plates of noncombustible, mar4resistant thermosetting plastic, 0.1" thick and of

plain style unless otherwise indicated.

4. Provide galvanized steel plates with stainless steel screws in all electrical and

mechanical equipment rooms, utility rooms, unfinished areas, and on all indoor surface

mounted boxes, and exposed extension rings. Plates shall be square or rectangular,

and hot4dipped galvanized or sherardized.

5. In wet areas, weatherproof exposed locations, and areas subject to hosing down, use

individually gasketed stainless steel cover plates.

G. Terminal Cabinets:

1. Provide surface or recess mounted types of sizes as indicated, constructed of

code4gauge sheet steel with hinged, lockable doors.

H. Nameplates:

1. Provide a nameplate for each panelboard, terminal cabinet, backboard, individually

mounted circuit breaker or motor control, disconnect switch, pull box, control panel,

push4button station, contactor, relay, all spare conduit stub4ups, and for all other

control devices or major items of electrical equipment.

2. Provide laminated plastic nameplates engraved in minimum 1/4" (6.4 mm) high black

letters on white background to correspond with the designations on the Drawings.

3. Attach nameplates to equipment with rivets, nuts and bolts, or self tapping sheet metal

screws.

I.

Safety Switches:

1. Unless indicated otherwise, use only unfused type and use only for motor equipment

disconnects. Provide switches with the number of poles and the voltage, current, and

horsepower ratings as required. Provide externally operable, quick4make, quick4break

type with cover interlock and lockable in either the open or closed position. Unless

indicated otherwise, provide switches indoors in NEMA Type 1 enclosures; outdoors or

where indicated to be weatherproof provide NEMA Type 3R raintight enclosures.

Switches shall be heavy4duty type horsepower rated meeting NEMA Specifications.

J.

Molded Case Circuit Breakers:

1. Provide molded4case circuit breakers of frame sizes, trip ratings and RMS symmetrical

interrupting ratings indicated.

2. Circuit breakers shall have permanent thermal and instantaneous magnetic trip.

Operating handle shall be a trip4free, toggle4type operating mechanism with

quick4make, quick4break action and positive handle trip indication.

K.

Fuses:

1. Below 200 amperes: Class K1, 200,000 amperes interrupting capacity Bussman

"Limitron", Chase4Shawmut "Amp4Trap Form 600", or Economy "Econolim".

2. 200 & 400 amperes fuse: Class RK1 Dual4Element Time4Delay fuse.

L.

Panelboards:

1. Provide circuit breaker type, dead4front safety style panelboards, with protective

devices in quantities, ratings, types, as required. Include anti4turn solderless pressure

type main lug connectors approved for use with copper conductors. Panels shall be

suitable for connecting feeders at top or bottom of panel. Equip with copper bus bars

with not less than 984percent conductivity, and full

sized neutral bus, unless otherwise indicated. Provide suitable lugs on neutral bus for

outgoing feeders requiring neutral connections. Provide molded case main and branch

circuit breakers, with toggle handles that indicate when tripped.

2. Enclosures for all panelboards shall be fabricated by one manufacturer.

3. Provide feed4thru lugs and additional feed4thru gutter space as required.

4. Provide barriered space for mounting contactors and control devices with a hinged

door and lock, where shown or required.

5. Breakers serving loads comprised of large wattage incandescent lamps shall be

equipped with desensitized magnetic trip mechanisms which prevent tripping by

in4rush currents.

6. Provide approved handle ties for individual circuit breakers protecting each

ungrounded branch circuit conductor of multi4wire branch circuits.

7. Provide neatly typed circuit index cards, clearly and correctly identifying all circuits,

mounted in card holders, behind glass or heavy plastic on the inside of the panelboard

doors. Indexes shall accurately record all room numbers.

8. Electrical Code Compliance: Comply with applicable local code requirements of the

authority having jurisdiction and NEC Article 384 as applicable to installation, and

construction of electrical panelboards and enclosures.

9. UL Compliance: Comply with applicable requirements of UL 67 "Electric Panelboards"

and UL's 50, 869, 486A, 486B, and 1053 pertaining to panelboards, accessories and

enclosures. Provide panelboard units which are UL4listed and labeled.

10. NEMA Compliance: Comply with NEMA Standards Publication No. 250 "Enclosures

for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum)", Publication No. PB 1 "Panelboards",

and Publication No. PB 1.1 "General Instructions for Proper Installation, Operation and

Maintenance of Panelboards Rated 600 Volts or Less".

11. Panelboards for supplying Tenant Units circuiting for equipment rated at 120 volts shall

be 120/208 volts, 3 phase, 4 wire.

M. Lighting Fixtures:

1. General: Provide recessed, surface and pendant4mounted lighting fixtures, complete

with lamps and ballasts.

2. Exterior Light Fixtures: Provide recessed or surface mounted fixtures on building as

indicated.

3. Fluorescent Lighting Fixtures:

a. In office spaces and finished areas, fixtures shall be low brightness recessed

type, 2'x2' or 2'x4', with either 2 or 3 lamps. Fixtures shall have parabolic4shaped

reflector cells of semi4specular anodized aluminum, formed from one piece

brushed finished material. Parabolic blades shall be rigid, completely closed at

the top by integral flanges designed for maximum reflectance.

b. In areas not requiring low brightness louvers, such as restrooms, fixtures shall be

similar to above except with acrylic lens. Provide lens constructed of 100 percent

virgin acrylic, 0.125" thick, with female conical prisms having 3/16" square base.

Minimum depth of prisms shall be 0.08". Cones shall run 45 degrees to the

parallel and perpendicular axis of the lens panel. Lenses shall be destaticized,

and of the one4piece type. Provide lenses as made by KSH Incorporated or equal.

4. Ballasts:

a. Fluorescent Ballasts: Provide electronic type with characteristics to suit the

lamps, with voltage rating as required by the circuit in which fixture is connected.

Provide ballasts with the following features:

(1) Type "P" 4 integral thermal protection.

(2) CBM certified by ETL.

(3) Power factor not less than 90 percent.

(4) Quietest sound rating commercially available for each type.

(5) Third harmonic content: Maximum 15%.

(6) Total harmonic content: Maximum 10%.

(7) Maximum crest factor: 1.7.

b. Manufacturers: Advance, Dual4Lite, Jefferson or Universal.

5. Lamps: Provide lamps for all fixtures as indicated on the drawings and as follows:

a. Fluorescent:

(1) In general, fluorescent lamps shall be energy saving type, rapid start, T48, or

compact type PL, to suit fixture type.

b. All lamps to meet the requirements of the 1992 Federal Energy Policy Act.

c. Manufacturer: General Electric, Phillips or Osram/Sylvania.

6. Lighting fixtures shall be as described by the lighting fixture schedule.

1.04 INSTALLATION:

All material and equipment shall be installed in accordance with approved

recommendations of the manufacturer and conforming to the Contract Documents. The

installation shall conform to the applicable codes, rules and regulations. The Drawings

indicate the extent and the general location and arrangement of equipment, conduit and

wiring.

A. Conduit and Raceway:

1. Run concealed wherever possible.

2. Route conduit to avoid drains, other gravity lines and all obstructions.

3. Keep conduit at least 12" from the coverings on hot water and steam pipes, at least

18" from the covering on flues and breechings, and at least 24" from radiant heaters.

4. Run conduit exposed to view parallel with or at right angles to structural members,

walls or surfaces of the building. Route exposed conduit to preserve headroom,

access space and work space.

5. Changes in direction of runs shall be made with symmetrical bends or cast metal

fitting. Field4made bends and offsets shall be made with an approved hickey or

conduit4bending machine. Bend radius shall be not less than allowed in the NEC.

Crushed or deformed raceways shall not be installed.

6. Raceways shall be securely supported and fastened in place with pipe straps, wall

brackets, hangers, threaded C4clamps/beam clamps with retainers and locknut, or

ceiling trapeze at intervals not exceeding 10 feet. Fastenings shall be by expansion

bolt on concrete or brick; by machine screws, welded threaded studs. Nail4type nylon

anchors or threaded studs driven in by a powder charge and provided with lock washer

and nuts may be used in lieu of expansion bolts or machine screws.

7. Above suspended ceiling, support conduit on or from the structure by using galvanized

clips or galvanized brackets designed for the purpose. Hanging of equipment from

channel will not be permitted.

8. In steel stud construction: Rigidly support conduit at maximum 4' intervals with

galvanized clips or galvanized brackets designed for that purpose. Use galvanized

steel hangers of the types made specifically for the purpose where required.

9. Provide seismic bracing for conduits 241/2" diameter and larger.

10. Minimum conduit size shall be 3/4".

11. All conduit containing wiring operating at 120 volts or higher shall contain a code sized

equipment ground conductor.

12. Conduit for underground services shall be PVC encased in concrete.

C. Conductors:

1. Make joints, splices, taps and connections for 6004volt conductors with solderless

connectors. Use only plated copper alloy connectors or lugs; aluminum connectors or

lugs are not acceptable.

a. For #10 AWG and smaller: use #M "Scotchlok" or Ideal "Super Nut".

b. For #8 AWG and larger: Use T&B "Lock4Tie" connectors, Burndy Versitaps and

heavy4duty connectors, or O.Z. solderless connectors.

2. Retighten all bolt type connectors 24 to 48 hours after initial installation and before

taping.

3. Tape all connections made with non4insulated type connectors with rubber4type, 141/2

times the thickness of the conductor insulation, then cover with Scotch No. 23 tape.

D. Lighting Fixtures:

1. Verify the ceiling condition for each fixture and provide fixture complete with proper

mounting accessories required for the ceiling condition in which the fixture is mounted.

2. Where fixtures are for lay4in mounting in an exposed runner type of ceiling, the

additional ceiling cross runners required for the fixtures will be provided as part of the

ceiling work. In such ceilings or similar, provide each fixture with clips (4 required) or

equivalent means to prevent the accidental disengagement of the fixtures from the

ceiling. Where fixtures in such ceilings are square or rectangular in shape, provide

each fixture with two (2) #12 AWG galvanized steel wires, at diagonally opposite

corners, and secure to the building structure.

E. Grounding:

1. All metallic enclosures and raceways shall be electrically grounded per NEC Article

250.

F. Tests:

1. General: In addition to tests required by other sections, perform or cause to be

performed, provide all tests specified for electrical work.

2. Operating Test: After the installation is completed, conduct an operating test.

Equipment shall be demonstrated to operate in accordance with the requirements

herein, and to the satisfaction of the Owner's representative. All tests shall be

performed in the presence of the Architect or his representative. The Contractor shall

furnish instruments and personnel required for the test.

G. Protection:

1. Protect materials before, during and after installation and protect installed work and

materials of all other trades.

H. Replacements:

1. In the event of damage, immediately make all repairs and replacements necessary for

the approval of the Architect and at no additional cost to the Owner.

I. Delivery and Storage:

1. Deliver all materials to the job site in their original unopened containers, where

applicable, with all labels intact and legible at time of use. Store in strict accordance

with the manufacturer's recommendations as approved by the Architect.

2. Provide safety sliding cover plate for electrical outlets less than or equal to 36" A.F.F. in classrooms,

corridors, and adult restrooms.
