Prince Albert Raiders Game Notes

RAIDER REVIEW: The Raiders continued their strong start on Wednesday night, defeating the Red Deer Rebels 4-1 at the Art Hauser

Centre. 17-year-old forward Reid Gardiner opened the scoring under 2 minutes into the game and 18-year-old forward Craig Leverton

added to the lead to start the second period. The Rebels got on the board midway through the middle stanza, but 19-year-old pivot Jay-

den Hart regained the 2-goal lead, and set up Gardiner for his second of the night early in the third to put the game out of reach. 20-

year-old goaltender Cole Cheveldave stopped 24 of 25 shots faced in his league-leading fifth win of the season.

VS. OIL KINGS: The Raiders got the best of the Oil Kings last season, posting a 3-0-1-0 record in the four matchups. Both 18-yeear-old

centre Leon Draisaitl and 19-year-old winger Mike Winther recorded 2 goals and 2 assists against the Oil Kings last season.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: On Wednesday night, the Raiders acquired 20-year-old defenceman MacKenzie Johnston from the

Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a conditional third round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. Johnston has 233 games of WHL experi-

ence, all with Kelowna, recording 34 points and 75 penalty minutes. The Swift Current, Saskatchewan native will wear number 6 for the

Raiders.

SIZZLING START: The Raiders are 5-0-0-0 to start the season for the first time since the WHL started keeping game-by-game records in

1995-1996, and are the only team in the league without a loss this season. The Raiders longest win streak last year was seven games; with

the longest win streak in franchise history happening in 1985-86, with the Raiders winning 15 in a row.

EARLY AND OFTEN: The Raiders currently sit second in the league in goals scored, with 28 markers in 5 games played, including out-

scoring their opponent 12-4 in the first period.

CATCHING COACH: 18-year-old defenceman Josh Morrissey need five more points to tie current Associate Coach Dave Manson’s ca-

reer total of 95. The Raiders captain is currently tied with Shane Zulyniak for 6th spot on the franchises career goals by a defensemen list,

with 27.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: 18-year-old Raiders, forward Gage Quinney and defenceman Tomas Andrlik, are currently tied for second spot

among rookie in plus/minus, with a plus-6 rating.

MAKING SURE: 19-year-old forward Carson Perreaux one of only three players in the WHL with more than one insurance goal, having

scored both of his in a pair of wins against the Wheat Kings.

eG

MAKING THE LIST: 18-year-old imports, forward Leon Draisaitl and defenceman Tomas Andrlik, both made the preliminary ‘Players

to Watch” list released by NHL Central Scouting earlier this week, with Draisaitl being listed one of seven WHL players in the “A” cate-

gory and Andrlik being placed in the “C” category.

EARLY PRAISE: The Raiders were ranked 2nd overall in the pre-season BMO Canadian Hockey League rankings this week, and were the

top ranked team in the WHL, moving up from 3rd spot last week.

UPCOMING GAMES: The Raiders head to Swift Current to face the Broncos tomorrow night, before hosting the Vancouver Giants on

Tuesday October 8th. The Green and Gold depart for a 4-game Central Division swing over Thanksgiving weekend, including stops in Red

Deer, Calgary, Kootenay and Edmonton. They return home on October 20th to host the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Edmonton Oil Kings Game Notes

SEASON -AT-A-GLANCE: The Edmonton Oil Kings enter today’s game against the Prince Albert Raiders on a two-game losing streak that has dropped the team to 2-3-0-0 on the season, putting them below .500 for the first time since the end of the 2010-11 season. LAST GAME: Mitch Moroz scored a natural hat trick in the second period in just 2:32, but the Oil Kings gave up four power-play goals in the same frame as they fell 4-3 to the Brandon Wheat Kings Wednesday. Tyler Santos gave up three goals on 11 shots in his first WHL start and was chased midway through the season period. Tristan Jarry stopped 11 of 12 shots in relief and took the loss. Captain Curtis Lazar made his season debut and finished with an assist and a plus-3 rating. REGULAR SEASON LEADERS: Mitch Moroz - 6 Goals; Henrik Samuelsson - 8 Assists; Henrik Samuelsson – 11 Points; Curtis Lazar – plus-3; Cody Corbett & Henrik Samuelsson - 1 GWG; Henrik Samuelsson & Brett Pollock - 2 PPG; Henrik Samuelsson & Cody Corbett - 3 PPA; Mitch Moroz - 22 PIM SPECIAL TEAMS: Edmonton’s power-play sits tied for seventh in the WHL, converting on 25 per cent of its chances. The Oil Kings have pot-ted seven power-play goals on 28 chances and were 0-4 against Brandon. Edmonton’s penalty kill is 13th in the league, stopping 79.3 per cent of chances but coming off a disastrous 4-8 outing against Brandon. LAST SEASON VS PRINCE ALBERT: The Raiders were one of the few teams to get the best of Edmonton in 2012-13, as the Oil Kings man-aged just a 1-2-1-0 record against the boys from PA. The two teams split their match-ups in Prince Albert, with the Raiders taking the first 3-2 but the Oil Kings winning the second 4-3 in overtime. WELCOME BACK: Curtis Lazar, Edmonton’s leading goal scorer last season with 38, played his first game of the season for the Oil Kings Wednesday after being returned to the team Monday by the Ottawa Senators. Lazar, 18, was taken 17 th overall by Ottawa in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft and played a pair of exhibition games with the team this season, as well as competing in a rookie camp and tournament in London, Ont. Against the Wheat Kings, he finished plus-3 and had one assist. OH CAPTAIN, OUR CAPTAIN: Lazar has been named captain of the Oil Kings, as team captain Griffin Reinhart has made the New York Islanders opening roster, the Isles announced Monday. Reinhart, 19, was taken fourth overall by the Islanders in the 2012 draft. New York can play him in up to nine games before having to decide to send him back to junior or keep him on the roster for the season. CHANGE OF SCENERY: Reid Petryk will make his debut for the Oil Kings tonight after being acquired from Everett Tuesday in exchange for a pair of draft picks. Petryk, who had 40 points with the Silvertips last season, fills Edmonton’s empty overage slot. The Edmonton native at-tended camp with the Edmonton Oilers this fall on a free agent tryout. SLAMMIN’ SAMMY: Henrik Samuelsson is off to a white-hot start to the season in leading the Oil Kings offence. The 19-year-old first-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes has three goals and eight assists through five games to lead Edmonton with eleven points. That number also puts him fifth in the WHL. Samuelsson had 80 points in 69 games last season. MITCH IN A MINUTE: Winger Mitch Moroz took over the team lead in goals Wednesday night recording a natural hat trick in the second pe-riod with all three goals coming just 2:32 apart. Moroz has potted five goals over the past two games and leads the Oil Kings with six on the season. That number leaves him fourth in the WHL in goal scoring. Moroz is also third in the WHL in penalty minutes after dropping the gloves with Rene Hunter Wednesday. UP NEXT: The Oil Kings continue their three-game road swing with a visit to Prince Albert Friday night.
